AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

I wear mine round my neck 😀 but the card is turned in because the pic is a really vain selfie 😂😂

I have a rugby season ticket and wear it on a lanyard when I go to matches so that I don't lose it at the game. No photo on it though!

Galvantula · 01/05/2019 21:51

I used to forget my pass a lot so I have a retractable clip on thingy now ands I attach it to tomorrow's trousers. Blush

Polarbearflavour · 01/05/2019 21:53

I have a “dependant’s pass” to get onto DH base too. I don’t wear it on a lanyard though. Nobody wears their passes once on bases.

tinytemper66 · 01/05/2019 22:37

I keep mine in a drawer in my classroom. I only wear it when I take my disabled son to meetings in places like the job centre, where otherwise , they treat him like a nobody.

OhDiddums · 01/05/2019 22:47

I hate wearing both of mine. Can work from two locations, so I have to have both. I am one of those people who turn their photo the other way around. But the great thing is for security purposes I'm not meant to wear it outside or have it visible... So as soon as I leave off comes the bugger.

LadyRannaldini · 01/05/2019 22:52

I had to laugh at OH walking round a Natioanl Trust property with our cards in his Disneyworld lanyard.

flingingmelon · 01/05/2019 23:02

I work somewhere with lots of clothing rails. After nearly hanging myself with it I'm no longer a fan.

I'm better with a retractable clippy thing.

pearldeodorant · 01/05/2019 23:05

I had a neck injury years ago as a child and it's still weaker than it should be after months of traction and braces. I have to wear bleeps and all sorts on my lanyard at work and honestly it's so painful. Part of me just hates the sensation of it round my neck, the other part of me is just in pain from the weight itself.

And as others have said, they're a risk for being pulled/getting caught on things. I hate them!!

Honeyroar · 01/05/2019 23:07

I can't believe there's ten pages on lanyards! Yet here I am too. I wear mine, I generally turn it picture inwards.

I thought they broke if someone grabbed them, so weren't a strangulation risk?

Anxiouslady · 01/05/2019 23:21

I wear mine all the time so I don’t lose it! But there was recent email and Facebook post doing the rounds warning about the dangers of wearing them whilst driving. Minor car crashes where the driver would have been otherwise unscathed have ended up being quite serious as impact of airbag onto the lanyard has caused serious injuries (perforated lungs etc). I’m more conscious of taking mine off now Shock

Dillydallyer · 01/05/2019 23:29

I don’t mind mine but pic is turned round as I look horrific. We have to wear our work ID on a lanyard, have to be visible at all times in the buildings so can’t clip to trousers. But then we have to take them off to drive to and from work. I didn’t realise people loved and hated them so much!!

Beautga · 01/05/2019 23:31

My husband no longer able to wear one because of infection control he works in a hospital as a doctor

CaravanHero · 01/05/2019 23:33

Anxious lady I saw the Facebook posts too and I’m also certain to make sure I don’t drive away still wearing it!

itwasntmeifanyoneasks · 01/05/2019 23:48

I know how to get through Wednesday, I'll follow a thread about LANYARDS.

itwasntmeifanyoneasks · 01/05/2019 23:49

Ha it worked because it is actually Wednesday! Wine (it's my birthday, allowances can be made)

Blankspace4 · 01/05/2019 23:53

I actually hate the word LANYARD 🤮

StillMedusa · 01/05/2019 23:54

When my workplace (school) introduced them they made a big thong of how everyone would be checked when we came in and out.
I suspected this was unlikely and couldn't resist testing the statement...

I sticky back plastic-d a picture of Kermit the frog over my photo and turned my colleague into Cheryl Cole Grin No-one even noticed for 3 weeks!!! (and mine was bright green obviously). Sort of proved my point!

These days my pen and reading glasses dangle from it and it's a pain when I'm leaning over the children...

MonsterKidz · 01/05/2019 23:57

I don’t really like wearing one, but we have to for id and access. If you take it off and try to get through a door or go out the building and get back in you’re screwed.

It is proper annoying tho - all that jangling around and getting in the way.

No choice tho.

pantsville · 02/05/2019 02:50

I can't believe people perceive it to be boastful to wear a lanyard. I've had one all my working life and never viewed it as anything prestigious. In my company you wear one whatever your pay grade; I've worn one working for minimum wage!

Pawsandnoses · 02/05/2019 05:49

I wear mine at work so that I don't get locked out when I go to the loo. It has my office key on it as well, so wouldn't want to leave it anywhere. I did accidentally dangle my key in my yoghurt though last week.

Teacher22 · 02/05/2019 06:16

I hid mine when I worked. I wasn’t school property and did not need marking out as such by a logo’d signifier.

Ihatehashtags · 02/05/2019 06:27

They’re ugly, unhygienic and don’t look professional

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 02/05/2019 06:33

I wear one all day for work but it's turned around as my photo was taken on the day I had the greasiest hair and they won't even let me pay for a new one 😩

gamerwidow · 02/05/2019 06:39

I’m allergic to the plastic in my lanyard. It brings me out in hives where it touches my skin.
Also because I work in a hospital I don’t always want to be identified as staff if I’m on a lunch break on similar. We’re not supposed to wear them outside of work either in case we do or say something to damage the reputation of the hospital.
