Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

I'm always bemused by the row of medals worn by royals around the world

There's a lovely story on this theme about Philip meeting a Brazilian General and noticed a WWII medal among the selection on his chest ...

Philip (cuttingly): I didn't know Brazil was in the war that long
General: At least, sir, I didn't get it for marrying my wife

goodbyestranger · 30/04/2019 09:22

Humpy I have royal connections through blood, since you ask explicitly :)

goodbyestranger · 30/04/2019 09:24

Off now but hopefully the new baby will be born by the time I get back, and be given an outrageous name to rock the establishment!

Genevieva · 30/04/2019 09:25

@Saavhi great choice of video. A life of shaking hands, church services and making small talk while smelling tea. Imagine if one of the princes had fallen for a medical student with a vocational desire to become a consultant. A lifetime of working long hours and night shifts while also studying for exams. It wouldn't really work, would it?

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 09:28

well rest assured that their racism will challenge when they see that baby. That’s some serious genetic diversity and the baby will grow up to be a knockout !!!!

I feel extremely sorry for all of these small royal children having to endure such curiosity, but being a royal flag carrier for racial diversity feels even worse for a tot, somehow. I hope they keep him or her well away from the hoopla except for high days and holidays. W & K seem to be succeeding at it fairly well.

LaMarschallin · 30/04/2019 09:30

It feels like there's racists to one side, and sychophants to the other

Huh. Thanks, RubberTreePlant. I'll now have a Stealers Wheel earworm all day.

I remember reading that the queen wasn't fearfully impressed on meeting Carole-an-e when said Carole greeted her (one assumes after HM had greeted her first; cue mass fainting otherwise) with "Pleased to meet you". My dear! The middle(ton) classlessness of it-!

I so often moan about the autocorrect on my phone, but, just now, when I made a Horlicks of typing in "classless", it changed it to "crassness" 😁

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/04/2019 09:30

@DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops please do report back on all the awards and decorations!

I think I'm squarely in the middle of the sycophants and the detractors. I have no problem with Kate's public image. She's doing a job. She is frustratingly good at not giving much material for gossip but that takes work. I think she's a tough and competitive lady who shouldn't be underestimated. No-one gets to be a royal wife without that characteristic, you need it to get near and then catch the eye of a Prince. She will have had plenty of rivals, she's the cream of them.

Meghan is cut from the same cloth but with a hefty dollop of artifice and ruthlessness thrown in. Bless her.

Genevieva · 30/04/2019 09:30

@goodbyestranger we all do somewhere, even if on the wrong side of the blanket. There is a geneticist who calculated that almost every Briton is descended from Edward III. What is more, his father, Edward II, was nearly assassinated a year before he was born. If that had been successful, almost the entire population of the country would have been different.

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 09:31

Huh. Thanks, RubberTreePlant. I'll now have a Stealers Wheel earworm all day.

Sorry. I did deliberately resist "to the left of me...to the right"Grin

Saavhi · 30/04/2019 09:32

Genevieva

Relax, all I did was post a funny video.

"Can you test the smell by smelling it?"

I need to know the answer!

goodbyestranger · 30/04/2019 09:32

In that case it was a slightly poorly phrased question. I took it to mean substantial - my bad Genevieva! (I'm not Danny Dyer incidentally).

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/04/2019 09:33

A propos of nothing, you can do a day trip to Mustique from one of the nearby islands if a stay is beyond your means. Worth it!

Saavhi · 30/04/2019 09:34

Honestly, why do some people get their knickers in such a twist? We can voice opinions on the royals that are less than reverential.

LaMarschallin · 30/04/2019 09:34

Bah! Meant "Carole-WITH-an-e".
Suspect fiddling with names to make them look "different" is probably looked down on by the royals, at least by the older generation.

RubberTreePlant · 30/04/2019 09:34

So are you one of Queen V's "absorbed into the gentry" descendants I mentioned earlier @goodbyestranger ?

Genevieva · 30/04/2019 09:35

@Saavhi, totally relaxed here. I saw that bit. It made me chuckle. "No, actually we test the smell by looking at it" did spring to mind.

goodbyestranger · 30/04/2019 09:41

RubberTreePlant No.

Got to go, really - very late. I'll catch up tonight (no smart phone).

StoneofDestiny · 30/04/2019 09:43

Kate is dim - her easy conformity is an visible testimony to that.
A truly intelligent woman would not be able to suffocate views, opinions, and a drive to improve so easily.
Her recorded achievements so far are having babies, smiling, wearing clothes well and managing life with a limitless budget, a battery of nannies, servants, flunkies, stylists, cooks and advisors on hand.

Saavhi · 30/04/2019 09:47

Genevieve- think I got the wrong end of the stick, apologies.

Genevieva · 30/04/2019 09:51

@StoneofDestiny Are you not sometimes jealous of people who find it easy to conform? I am ever so slightly. I am naturally non-conformist. I think it is in my blood. Straight As at school and a top degree from a top university never taught me not to put my foot in it, or to keep the lid on my strong sense of justice, or to care about wearing makeup and heels. Having to conform would be like wearing a straight jacket, so I am slightly in awe of people who find it easy.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 30/04/2019 09:51

More interested in the name than the baby itself tbh, although I hope everything goes well!

I also agree that Kate probably errs on the side of exceptionally safe as a survival tactic so I don't expect we really see much of her, coupled with genuinely struggling with public speaking. She also seems to be the current lightening rod for low level abuse so I think she's damned if she does or if she doesn't.

Queen Mary wasn't just a random acquirer either, she targeted items leant out from the royal collection that she wanted back!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/04/2019 09:55

Honestly, why do some people get their knickers in such a twist? We can voice opinions on the royals that are less than reverential.

Except when they concern a particular duchess while she is in a delicate condition, @Saavhi, in which case they are likely to get the whole thread deleted.

StoneofDestiny · 30/04/2019 10:01

Genevieva
Never jealous - just see it as a waste of talent, but easy to do if the talent or intellect isn’t there in the first place.
Education is tool for growth and change - not shackling the mind or ability.
The history of the royals shows they demand conformity and see it as self preservation.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 30/04/2019 10:10

@Myimaginarycat - arf, we defo don't want deletion Grin. Let me know what you want me to spot. I have no sash, decoration or tiara to wear so I am making up for it with my natural assets and a bling tastic necklace! Wink

MagicKingdomDizzy · 30/04/2019 10:14

Puzzledandpissedoff

I love that story!

What a brave man that Brazilian General was! Though he probably found himself on a black list and banned from any of Phil and Liz's future tea parties Grin
