Don't want to make this a TAAT, so I'll just say I have enjoyed everyone's observations on the royal family and it's made a boring weekend go much quicker Grin

Withstand the pace of time. The Queen and Margaret were style setters, as was Diana who did a lot of good promoting British Fashion. I hope Meghan does the same. Kate does not in the main except for the occasional Boden, White Company piece that pops up. Her children do more for British fashion. As for William and Harry, they have never led a trend. The Royal men never do.

FannyWork · 29/04/2019 13:42

I don’t think there’s any compelling reason why Kate cant dress more fashionably if she wanted to. Diana did, Princess Margaret did, Meghan does.

Actually Diana didn’t. She very much wore classic looks like the Channel suit or LBD. Margaret also tended towards the same.

If she wanted to, yes she could, but dressing fashionably a) causes a lot more scope for mistakes b) makes it a lot more likely in 20 years time you’ll look a tit.

If you don’t believe this go and compare pictures of Diana and Fergie in the late 80s and early 90s and see which has aged better. It might be Kate’s choice but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad one. I have actually noticed Meghan wears a lot of classic stuff too and in particular stuff reminiscent of Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn.

FannyWork · 29/04/2019 13:43

Kate does set trends! LK Bennett and Reiss has crazy sales because of her.

yolofish · 29/04/2019 13:44

The one I always thought dressed fabulously was Lady Helen Windsor - think she was an amassador for Armani or someting?

Whizzler · 29/04/2019 13:46

Kate can dress classically without dressing like a woman thirty years her senior. Those flappy skirts she's so fond of, they're bad.

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2019 13:47

LK Bennett and Reiss has crazy sales because of her.

That’s not the same as setting trends at a catwalk level. I don’t think designers are taking inspiration from Kate.

Maybe it’s less about ‘fashion’ and more that Meghan/Diana are more interesting dressers than she is.

Not that Kate doesn’t always look nice (and with that figure, clothes always hang beautifully on her), it’s just that it never goes beyond ‘nice’ into something more interesting and exciting.

justasking111 · 29/04/2019 13:47

LK Bennett is in administration, only so many pairs of shoes you can wear I guess and she tended to wear nude again and again. Which everyone copied.

Re Edward VIII and the Nazis, he was deeply in with them to the extent that the government were very worried about it. I think it's since come out that they didn't put everything in his red boxes that they should have after incidents of confidential papers being left around at drinks parties. During WW2 the Windsors weren't keen to leave Europe - Hitler had some hopes of using him as a puppet king and had made a big fuss of them during their visit to Germany, including buttering up Wallis by calling her HRH - and practically had to be shoved on a ship in Lisbon. They were then dumped out of the way as Governor of the Bermudas where he continued to cause concern (Roosevelt had them under surveillance) and is strongly believed to have been involved in the cover up in the murder of Sir Harry Oakes. In the 1960s he was still saying that Hitler was a nice chap.

Lots of the German aristocracy were very involved with Hitler due to similar right-wing and racist views, including Philip's brothers-in-law which is why none of his sisters were at the wedding. His mother was an interesting character; she became a nun and lived in Athens during WW2, becoming 'Righteous Amongst The Nations' according to Israel for her hiding of a Jewish family.

Anne had to get married in Scotland as the CofE didn't allow remarriage of divorcees and the CofS did so it was that or a civil service.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 13:53

I actually think Meghan dresses quite boringly with a penchant for tacky shoes on occasion, although she also can look amazing. Margaret was bolder with fashion , safe in the knowledge that she wouldn't be Queen, Meghan can do similar. Kate can't. Diana looked much better when she dressed more simply and classically - as I said, her bang on trend outfits are the most dated in pictures. DM always points Diana out in some of her twee outfits and hats as why fashion is fleeting but style is enduring. Kate at least looks timeless.

Whizzler · 29/04/2019 13:54

Timeless is so overrated.

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2019 13:56

Kate at least looks timeless.

Timelessly dull.

I’d far prefer a few fashion mistakes now and then than safe and bland all the time.

I’m a big fan of Kate’s actually, but clothes are not where she shines.

Whizzler · 29/04/2019 13:57

Queen Letitzia usually looks great, and it's a look that will look great in photos 30 years from now. She wears lots of trousers. Would love to see Kate in some trousers. And out of those strange hairband things.

I think this dress suited the body shape so well. DoC looks sensational in fitted clothes as well.

Whizzler · 29/04/2019 14:01

Wearing leotards over cycling shorts is clearly very good for the figure! Grin

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 14:03

Timeless means no one laughs at you in photos.

@goodbyestranger- and you think Diana's sillier hats and overly matchy outfits have aged well? She looked much better when she started properly wearing simple classics. I do agree that Kate has had a few clangers and a frumpy phase. But overall she usually looks good. It's her job to look safe. She looks better now she's learnt to put her hair up with hats, though. I also like her hairband style. It works on her! A lot of it is what works on your personality, too. She's not edgy. She'd look uncomfortable wearing that sort of thing so she'd look really wrong.

KoraBora · 29/04/2019 14:04

I find the history and interlinking of the Royal families fascinating DSHathaway. Especially the history of the Romanovs. As I understand it they used Prince Philip's DNA to identify the Romanovs as his Grandmother in a direct female line was the Tsarinas sister. They would all have inherited the same mitochondrial DNA which is passed, largely unchanged, from mother to child. I believe he is also separately related to Tsar Nicholas. They were all definitely in need of some fresh blood into the gene pool!

goodbyestranger · 29/04/2019 14:11

There's no necessary connection between Diana and Kate Confused. I think Diana's outfits were only really good towards the end of her life but that is actually irrelevant to how daft Kate looks most of the time when at events.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 29/04/2019 14:19

I think Kate does have a timeless style which is very important for a Duchess.

goodbyestranger · 29/04/2019 14:23

Oh piffle to timeless. Her dress sense (or her dresser's dress sense) is dire.

RubberTreePlant · 29/04/2019 14:25

I find the history and interlinking of the Royal families fascinating DSHathaway.

This series is v good. It's about the Danish monarchy and how it married into British, Russian etc Royal families. So lots about the BRF, lots about the last Romanovs, and - unusually - lots of the talking heads are royals themselves;

Whizzler · 29/04/2019 14:26

piffle is such an underused word. So mild yet so dismissive.
