I'm starting a new job which requires me to put my hair up. I've literally (well, with the exception of going swimming!) never bothered doing this! I've watched some YouTube videos claiming to be easy - not to me they aren't!

Please help:)

Look for hair screws - you only need two to hold hair in place

They really are worth the money - even cheaper if you eBay from China

Elphame · 27/04/2019 00:01

The only thing that holds my hair are those two comb things that are joined by elasticated fabric - I have no idea what they are called.

I just pull my hair into a low ponytail and twist it up. I then use one comb above my ear, wrap the fabric around my head and secure the other comb above the other ear.

It takes seconds. No other pins or clips required and I have very long, thick and heavy hair. It stays in place all day

Beeziekn33ze · 27/04/2019 00:08

Barrette is usually a plain metal hair slide, as worn by Lucy (Royal Palaces) Worsley.

IHeartKingThistle · 27/04/2019 00:22

I'm English (West Country) and I call those hair bands. I thought bobbles were those plastic things I had when I was a kid. Maybe it's regional.

Getting lots of good tips here but can give none sadly!

hellenbackagen · 27/04/2019 00:28

lltavilli

Many jobs have a code of dress and expect longer hair worn up.

I'm a police officer and if hair is longer than collar length it must be worn up - many disciplined professional jobs require this - it's like part of the uniform. Professional standards. We also have to have hair if natural colour (so no pink or blue dye jobs) .

We also have rules on make up and nail polish. You simply accept it if you want to do the job . If you don't you find a different job where standards are more relaxed.

Get a large claw clip.
Get your hair into a ponytail without the bobble and twist it (as many times as you like!)
Hold that up to your head and attach the clip - done! It takes 10 seconds honestly.
You can make it messy or really clean/formal if needs be.

I use a claw clip too anything else my hair just doesn't stay in really like crisco hair products they also do those pointy clips beak clips that look ok

Iamnotagoddess · 27/04/2019 09:10

No hairstyle is super easy on myself.

I am shit at doing my own hair 😂

Alienspaceship · 27/04/2019 09:15

I thought ‘bobbles’ were hair bands but with plastic bead decorations, as worn by quite young children. I too was confused why they were needed for all these hairstyles Grin

Trills · 27/04/2019 09:18

I did not know the word for "Gibson tuck" but I got this video

Some hair videos are like
step 1 make a ponytail
step 2 twist it
step 3 MAGIC
step 4 now you have the hairstyle

That one was very clear and do-able.

x2boys · 27/04/2019 09:56

Must be a regional thing I call.all things that you can wear your hair in a ponytail with a Bobble!

Beetle76 · 27/04/2019 10:06

I was recently flying long distance and one of the cabin crew was sporting a really lovely hairstyle (which I now know is a Gibson tuck thanks to this thread). I commented that I wished I could look as put together as she did after a 12-hr flight. She whipped out her hair and put it all back up again perfectly in about 30-seconds using some kind of elasticated hair band/pad contraption and a couple of hair pins. I was in awe! She said she got it from Claire’s Accessories. Looked tidy and sophisticated without trying to hard. I’d forgotten about it so thanks for the reminder - I need to pop to the shops to see if I can find it. It’s probably one of those things that doesn’t work with all hair types but I’m definitely going to give it a go. I’ll report back if it’s any good!

Processedpea · 27/04/2019 10:12

i just tried that gibson tuck and looked liked someone from edwardian england

Aridane · 27/04/2019 12:23

x2boys - or maybe it’s an age thing Grin* -

Hippychick78 · 27/04/2019 14:56

I don't think I would suit the Gibson tick either 🤔

Excited to just have bought hair screws, never heard of those. I think I'm going to get lots of hair cut off soon. Booked in for 13th may

MabelMoo23 · 27/04/2019 15:14

I suspected cabin crew from your post. I fly a lot and am always in awe at cabin crew hair up do's

What do you you if you only have bog standard shoulder length hair? I'm guessing a simple ponytail won't do on BA to Washington DC!!

CurlyMango · 27/04/2019 15:50

Get a bid clamp thing. Then gather and pull out to the back. Twist it round it’s self, it then curls in half. Clamp it. Never thought it would work for my thick hair but it’s great.

Hairdont · 27/04/2019 17:34

I've been spending on amazon :). Have ordered one of those things cee linked to (Elphame is that the same thing you were meaning?), some of hellen's donuts, and green's screw things. Also ordered a ponytail loop thing - no idea what to do with it but it was only 63p!

Thanks for the video links too - the Gibson pleat looks doable - suspiciously so!

I don't think claw clips or banana clips are allowed which is a shame.

Really appreciate all your tips, thank you.

Elphame · 27/04/2019 17:43

No - I have one of those snap band things. I have never got it to work! I have too much hair.

Mine are similar to these

If your hair is long enough- about to bra strap or longer- hairsticks are fantastic for ease of use. I have thigh-length hair that I can put up in about thirty seconds flat and have it stay all day with a single stick. There are great youtube tutorials for different buns- for shorter hair, I'd say learn a nautilus bun, or for longer, a knot bun is quick, simple and looks good.

Violetroselily · 27/04/2019 18:18

OP have you had a look on YouTube? May be easier to follow a video than written instructions

Maybe look for cabin crew hairstyles
