I'm starting a new job which requires me to put my hair up. I've literally (well, with the exception of going swimming!) never bothered doing this! I've watched some YouTube videos claiming to be easy - not to me they aren't!

Please help:)

Pony tail, twist into a sausage, tuck ends into the sausage , a hair comb horizontally slotted into the side to secure.

You can buy tools cheap from ebay to help you do up dos.

What job requires an up-do? Genuinely interested?

Snuffalo · 26/04/2019 22:47

When I googled bobble all I saw was a brand of water bottle so assumed they were either another word for a scrunchie, or some sort of cutesy plastic hair accessory based on the name. If a bobble is just a covered elastic please carry on.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 26/04/2019 22:48

I do a gibson tuck, usually looks ace but I default to it too often now

DieSchottin93 · 26/04/2019 22:49

I have waist length hair and have to have mine up for work. I just tie it in a ponytail then twist it and sort of fold it on itself if that makes sense and secure it with a hair claw (Claire's sells loads of them). Easy peasy and it only takes 2 mins Smile

DieSchottin93 · 26/04/2019 22:50

@BummyKnocker if you work with food you have to have your hair up

ceeveebee · 26/04/2019 22:53

Get a doughnut to match the colour of your hair. One with a press stud is better because it's easier to roll and secure your hair up neatly.
Do a ponytail first, high or low according to where you want the bun. Roll ponytail around the doughnut up to base of ponytail, secure press stud, arrange hair around the ring evenly. Push in a few hair pins, five is plenty, but if hairspray if you want and done.

I have long, very straight hair, am clumsy and have no patience, but I can do this updo in about 20 seconds, no mirror and it looks great, stays up, lots of compliments.

pantsville · 26/04/2019 22:56

Snuffalo, please describe what you think a bobble is Grin

Graphista · 26/04/2019 22:57

My hair is waist length and I wear it up most of the time.

I simply gather as I would for a pony tail at nape of neck, twist tightly until it starts curling up on itself, hold in place at crown, fold in 2 and secure with a clip (I use either crocodile clips or Spring clips

Attached pic is fairly close to how it looks when up but uses a different style of clip, I couldn't use that one it wouldn't stay in place.

Is a bobble snob a snobble?

origamiunicorn · 26/04/2019 23:02

What are 'bobbles' and why are adult women wearing them in their hair? ... I'd avoid whatever on earth a 'bobble' is and go with covered elastics in the same colour as your hair.

That IS a bobble you nitwit.

hellenbackagen · 26/04/2019 23:15

I do what graphista does.

I wash it and dry it roughly leaving it a bit damp.

Gather it all at base of neck as if to do a low pony tail.

Start to twist it and pull it up.

I use a big clip with a spring (has to be big and spring loaded)
Secure that at the top then fan the rest over the top of the clip - back comb a bit of needed. Then I pull bits down around my face and fringe to soften it a little.

Literally takes all of a few minutes. Experiment with where to put the clip - middle of head or higher up - I like mine high up at the back of my head so it gives a bit of height.

When it gets to long for this I use a bun ring and do a really fast bun by putting it into a pony with a bobble then pull it it through the bun ring. Fan it out over the ring evenly then pop another bobble over the bun ring to hold it in place. I have a lite poking out so I wrap that around the base of the bun and either use a big scrunchie to hide it or I secure it with Kirby grips. Another fast easy one and you can wear the bun either high or low. Low always looks elegant and sophisticated. Higher up stays in better for me and I like to see the top of the bun - I need a bit of height to even my round face out! Again I pull bits down to soften it.

kaitlinktm · 26/04/2019 23:17

When I used bobbles to do my (then) boyfriend's little sisters' hair in the 70s and 80s they looked like this, but now I use the term just for covered elastic bands.

babysharkah · 26/04/2019 23:18

Claw clip, twist into a one at base of neck and put the claw in.

JanartaMeen · 26/04/2019 23:20

Also recommend the snapband bun makers. Dd's hair looks really smart when I use those.

Doobigetta · 26/04/2019 23:25

Make a ponytail shape but don’t actually secure it (this lessens the kink left afterwards). Twist it round on itself into a bun. Secure with stretchy silicone coil thing. It’s surprisingly firm- this holds my thick, waist-length hair all day- and doesn’t pull too much on the roots.

Aridane · 26/04/2019 23:25

You see, other than baby's suggestion- which is all I do - I literally cannot follow any of the other suggestions. I don't think my brain is wired for hair style understanding and arranging

Aridane · 26/04/2019 23:26

And what is a donut? Or Barrett?

hippoherostandinghere · 26/04/2019 23:26

These are bobbles.

Hippychick78 · 26/04/2019 23:27

My hair is quite long...

Split hair down side or middle parting and put in two high ponytails. Plait each ponytail secure with bobble.

I then take the bottom of one plait and take it over to meet the other plait/top of ponytail and kirby grip into place. Bring the other plait over and secure in the same way. So the two plaits are horizontal from one side to the other. Tuck ends in and light spray of hairspray.

I get loads of compliments and strangely it must look complicated because people ask how I did it all the time 😁

Hairdont · 26/04/2019 23:31

Right well I have plenty of things to try over the weekend and I'm very grateful thank you! I won't post pictures but I'll attempt progress reports! Job is cabin crew.

For smartness and staying power, Kirby grips and supreme hold elnette are your friends. The grips need to go in with the wavy side down. If hair is freshly washed then spray hair before you put grips in as well as after.

Iltavilli · 26/04/2019 23:52

@HyHyHyena a ridiculous response. OP was clear it wasn’t for that purpose but was for presentation when she stated “more formal”. But carry on being weird if it helps your day.
