I'm starting a new job which requires me to put my hair up. I've literally (well, with the exception of going swimming!) never bothered doing this! I've watched some YouTube videos claiming to be easy - not to me they aren't!

Please help:)

I found it but they didn’t have it in the right colour for my hair. They had an own brand one that does a similar style but as half up / half down. I think the padded part is smaller. It looked good from the back and sides but it didn’t quite work from the front. It might be the size but I also think if I took the time to do the front sections separately it would look great. Overall I think it’s worth persevering with as it definitely has potential. I’m not great at doing my hair though so if you have more of a flair for this sort of thing it would probably work just fine!

Ah Beetle thank you so much for your feedback!

Violet yes, I have looked on YouTube for cabin crew hairstyles - I got myself in a real sweat trying (unsuccessfully!) to do some of them.

I pull my hair together at the back, holding with thumb and forefinger use other hand to pull sideways over forefinger, catching with forefinger so it is looped around, twist it up till it is tight and pop a stick through, it holds itself. At work it is usually a pen but you can get cute bun sticks too. It is only held up by one stick and is V secure

maddening · 28/04/2019 16:31

This is how I do it but my hair is not as long or thick so I don't have excess at the top, my stick goes as a different angle

Yes I would think a bobble has coloured plastic balls on. Think they are ok regarding the hair damage, but not a good look on an adult 🤣

I've come back with a progress report. Or more accurately, a lack of progress ... I'm so useless :(. I can get it up but not tidily. Also - I'm sure I'm being very stupid - but those snap band things that cee recommended have arrived and I can't figure out how to use them Blush

Snapband

Put in a ponytail
Curl the hair from the end and wrap your hair round it - as you get to the ponytail bobble let go

palahvah · 03/05/2019 23:16

Hairdont is it Emirates? Asking because if so you have to be able to get your little hat on top. If it were you'd find scores of ex-crew online (FB etc) who would be wiling to give you tips. I'm sure similar for other airlines.

Hally2020 · 04/05/2019 07:54

I'm from the south east and we call it a bobble too 😊

Spudlet · 04/05/2019 08:10

I am awful at doing hair, but I just mastered the donut bun and I am so proud (prouder than of my degree, my DS, professional achievements Grin I am actually joking for those who've had a sense of humourectomy....)

Anyway. Hair in a low ponytail. Slide the donut over and pull it out to the end of the tail. Then tuck the ends of the tail over and roll the donut down the hair - there will be ends sticking out but that is ok!

When you get to the point when the donut is at your head (hope this is making sense), take another bobble - here I use an extra long one - and put it over the donut, pulling in any loose ends. Then roll the donut again, so the second bobble and ends are tucked away inside.

Finally, take one more bobble and wind it around between the bun and your head, for extra security.

Your hair sort of expands all the way around the donut as you roll IME, but grab a mirror just to make sure it's all covered. Then hairspray.

Thie has survived a full day of outdoors dog and preschooler wrangling, with a bit of yoga chucked in at the end for good measure, and needed only minimal retooling throughout the day.

It works best on hair that was washed the day before (as will all updos).

Keep trying!

Could one of your colleagues ‘train’ you on putting your hair up?

MadisonAvenue · 04/05/2019 09:13

This is what I'd call a bobble, I still have some of mine from the 70s. The plain elastic is what I'd call a hair elastic, it must be a regional thing.

I just tried the tuck posted earlier and I look like someone out of a period drama.

Thank you for the latest advice! It's BA not Emirates.

I've avoided donuts so far but I'm off to buy one after your post Spud - and if I achieve similar results I too will be proud beyond reason! The woman in Claire's knows my name now I've been in there so much!

Spud - that’s a weird way of doing the doughnut!

Ponytail
Add doughnut and spread hair to cover the circle
Add another band to hold hair under the doughnut
Tuck in ends or twist and pin

Spudlet · 04/05/2019 12:56

Nope, could never do it like that, the ends never went in. It always looked awful when I tried it! But rolling it over (like the sock bun thing) makes it really secure, no pins needed.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 04/05/2019 13:08

Pull most of your hair into a high ponytail, leaving two sections loose (one either side). Make the ponytail into a makeshift bun (i.e. just tucking the ends in). Wrap the loose sections around the bun and secure them with Kirby grips.

Trills · 07/05/2019 08:05

The period drama thing was part of why I liked it! It looks "on purpose", compared to a "messy bun" which can go from " a hairdo" to "just a mess" very easily.

StCharlotte · 07/05/2019 08:15

Gibson Tuck?? That should be a StCharlotte Tuck. I devised it for a bridesmaid updo nearly 30 years ago. Pah!

frugalkitty · 07/05/2019 08:22

This has reminded me of the time I used a clear elastic in my hair which must have been showing because one of the kids in my class asked me why I was wearing loom bands in my hair! Grin
