To feed the ducks in the park frozen peas?

Signs in the park saying to give peas, lettuce etc not bread to the ducks. Can I give frozen peas? Will they defrost in the water? Do I have to cook them first? Blush

I have no idea OP but this really made me smile!! My dog likes to chase them frozen if I drop them.....

What a good sign. Grin

I give frozen peas. By the time we're there they've defrosted a bit. I've no idea if it's right though...

MontStMichel · 25/04/2019 14:59

I give them defrosted peas, rather than frozen. I would expect frozen peas to burn or get stuck in my throat, so it might do the same to ducks? However, I have never cooked them. You can also give them wild bird seed.

recrudescence · 25/04/2019 15:03

Well, they eat their pondweed and other vegetables raw so I don’t think you need to cook the peas.

HappyDinosaur · 25/04/2019 15:05

Hasn't the no bread think been debunked? I thought they said now it was fine as long as it's not mouldy. I can't imagine the ducks would mind but they might taste a bit chilly, maybe defrost then first?

Newbiewife · 25/04/2019 15:05

I'm pretty sure a frozen pea will defrost in the water pretty quick or even bu the time you get from freezer to the park

Chelonia · 25/04/2019 15:07

Vet nurse here. Let peas thaw a bit before offering them but they'll be fine raw not cooked. Thanks for offering food that is NOT bloody bread - it's so bad for birds and waterway health!

MuddlingMackem · 25/04/2019 15:09

I'm sure I read somewhere that it's only swans which are okay with bread but ducks definitely aren't.

BareBelliedSneetch · 25/04/2019 15:12

We tried feeding the ducks peas. They just looked at us in disgust and moved on the to next family who were throwing in bread 🙄

sillysmiles · 25/04/2019 15:16

Hasn't the no bread think been debunked? Pretty sure it hasn't - No bread for ducks and waterways!

SneakyGremlins · 25/04/2019 15:17

@Chelonia thankyou! That's helpful Smile

@BareBelliedSneetch I'm sort of expecting that Grin

I mean if you can't get skittles, you'll have to.

Emus · 25/04/2019 15:27

I tried to feed the ducks peas once, I was so proud of myself. The ducks however were ungrateful and left my offering untouched.

KnobOfStork · 25/04/2019 15:31

Another one who's been mugged off with my bag of peas whilst the geese went to the family showing off with their milk roll. Where are these birds that like peas and grapes and bird seed? Sad

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 25/04/2019 15:37

Where are these birds that like peas and grapes and bird seed?

In the same place as toddlers that prefer sprouts to smarties Wink

DoulaDaisy · 25/04/2019 15:37

It's not that they don't like them but think of it as offering a kid a bunch of peas or a lollipop. The bread is like a lollipop to the ducks.

Jellyfloodagain · 25/04/2019 15:41

I've found the bird seed goes down well with the ducks, I haven't tried peas.

DontCallMeShitley · 25/04/2019 15:52

Ducks and swans are dying of starvation because of the ban on bread.

Paddington68 · 25/04/2019 15:54

As long as you defrost them first, they will be fine.

chipperchop · 25/04/2019 15:56

Just feed them bird seed 🤷‍♀️

Yorkshirelady · 25/04/2019 16:04

I've tried peas, but the ducks looked at me in disgust and disdain and swam away in a huff towards the people throwing seed and bread. Ungrateful quackers!!! Should have kept the peas for my tea!

PigeonofDoom · 25/04/2019 16:04

Our local ducks won’t touch peas either! Looking at the latest advice, it sounds like brown or multi seed bread broken into small pieces, or bird seed are ok. My biggest issue with bread is rats- people chuck in half a loaf at our local ponds and this attracts a LOT of rats (I see at least one every time we visit Confused). As one of these is a boating lake, it’s a bit of a health hazard.

EmpressJewel · 25/04/2019 16:09

I gave the ducks lettuce once and the ducks ignored it.

Thistownaintbigenough · 25/04/2019 18:00

Cheap cornflakes are ok as well. Swans love cornflakes. No need to serve in a bowl with crisp Cold milk though
