To feed the ducks in the park frozen peas?

Signs in the park saying to give peas, lettuce etc not bread to the ducks. Can I give frozen peas? Will they defrost in the water? Do I have to cook them first? Blush

I tried Kale....I got shunned.
We feed them oats now and they love it.

So is bread to ducks what takeaway is to humans?

As in, we'd rather eat it than oats, or peas and it wont kill us immediately but in the long term its not good for our health?

Maybe the ducks think we are fat shaming them!

DizzyPhillips · 25/04/2019 20:52

I think it’s a lot of nonsense. Millennial duck feeding 🦆

As for uneaten bread. Never have I seen such a thing.

Villanellesproudmum · 25/04/2019 20:57

What’s peas were rejected. I’m partial to a good pea but only the sweeter petit pois, garden peas are a bit bland and mushy peas 🤢

MooBaaLaLaLa · 25/04/2019 21:24

We tried the "duck food" from the pet shop, ducks couldn't have given a toss and my toddler was very sad. We went back to slightly stale, wholegrain, seeded bread. I figured the seeds would be nutritious at least.

My DC used to love chasing frozen peas round the high chair tray. Maybe ducks are the same..?

Langrish · 25/04/2019 21:35

No idea but you can give them to treat goldfish for swim ladder problems so can’t imagine they’d do ducks any harm (someone who works for the rspb will be along to lambast me now).

LazyFace · 25/04/2019 21:44

Pets at home sells chicken food (layers), that's also suitable for ducks.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/04/2019 22:11

Wonders if they would eat the mushy peas that have lived in my cupboard for ages Wink

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/04/2019 22:12

I'm another one who tried to give peas to ducks only to find they laughed and went over to the people with the bread, leaving me feeling like I'd been tricked into doing something stupid.

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/04/2019 22:13

But then I try to feed my cats all sorts of worthy high meat European brand catfood only to find they refuse to eat it and hold out until I crack and give them Felix.

Mamalicious16 · 25/04/2019 22:18

Probably missing the point but what are swim ladder problems.....

CupOhTea · 25/04/2019 22:21

Yep, like a pp, we dutifully pack up defrosted peas and cut up grapes because “ducks love them” Hmm. Do they fuck! They want bread!

They do seem to like duck food though, which I assume is fine.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 25/04/2019 22:21

I bought duck and swan food from B&Q it was approved by the RSPB and it floated and they were daft for it! It was great fun!

This is how much they like the floating food..... She comes in and taps the container 😂

Another one who has had their well-meaning peas rejected in favour of a family chucking in white bread

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 25/04/2019 22:47

Really glad you posted that link Dontcallmeshitley I was about to do the same. The Queens head swan keeper has hit out at the advice not to feed them bread.

Theclearing · 26/04/2019 00:00

This is my favourite thread eva (apart from the starving swan angle obvs).

We bought posh duck food on t’internet and the Hampstead ducks were like, yah we love this darling, we’re not the white bread / downtown boy type of bird.

No seriously they really loved it. Then a goose bit my child .

SneakyGremlins · 26/04/2019 00:04

Bet you didn't bring goose food, did you?

Try sunflowerseeds or duck pellets instead if they wont eat peas 😁

Never ever bread for ducks. And it stinks up the water.

Theclearing · 26/04/2019 01:03

OMFG that clear connection/consequence had escaped me!
