To feed the ducks in the park frozen peas?

SneakyGremlins · 25/04/2019 14:56

Signs in the park saying to give peas, lettuce etc not bread to the ducks. Can I give frozen peas? Will they defrost in the water? Do I have to cook them first? Blush

We feed them oats. They love them

pattyhoo · 25/04/2019 18:24

Ducks also love cucumber chopped into little cubes!

MadSweeney · 25/04/2019 18:24

I'm lucky enough to have wild ducks in my garden. I once spent ages carefully chopping a selection of veg for them and they looked at me like I'd lost the plot.
I buy duck food from Amazon now. They absolutely love the floating food. I sometimes throw bread in for the fish but the ducks won't touch it. Too spoiled with the expensive stuff 😂

Lettuce was rejected by swans and ducks but the ducks liked oats and the swans went nuts for sweet corn (tinned) - they were diving down for it as it sank which delighted my DS! We were eventually abandoned for the white bread family though...

I was once chased by a swan out kayaking. I threw my lemon drizzle cake lunch at it to stall him . He liked it and ate it, then carried on chasing me.

Fish like cheese.

We feed them... duck food. £1 for a big bag (which lasts ages) from our local pet shop.

EssentialHummus · 25/04/2019 18:43

My peas sink Sad.

hsegfiugseskufh · 25/04/2019 18:46

I would probably defrost them first.

They (supposedly) like oats too. We have successfully fed some ducks oats. Others have turned their beaks up and swam off to the people feeding them bread which just made me and ds look like weirdos throwing oats.

Oh and if you do get oats dont do what me and ds did and throw them on a windy day!

Paddington68 · 25/04/2019 20:01

Do remember to take them out fo the packet or tin.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 25/04/2019 20:09

Our local pet shop sold some bird/fuck food and I took DS to the park feeling all smug about our offerings. The bloody ducks turned their noses up because someone else was there with bread!

AnotherEmma · 25/04/2019 20:11

bird fuck food Grin

I just got a very odd look from DH as I snorted with laughter at my mental image of someone lobbing a tin of Bachelors mushy peas at a duck.

EdWinchester · 25/04/2019 20:16

We have a garden full of ducks and feed them a variety of bird seed. They're the shiniest ducks I have ever seen.

They refuse peas.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 25/04/2019 20:17

Oops anotheremma BlushGrin

MulderitsmeX · 25/04/2019 20:19

Ducks love dried meal worms. mil finds it gross but they arent very worm-like

Boobahs · 25/04/2019 20:21

We do peas or oats Smile

DizzyPhillips · 25/04/2019 20:22

What’s the problem with bread suddenly? Have they not been eating bread for years?!

Absofrigginlootly · 25/04/2019 20:24

Hasn't the no bread think been debunked? I thought they said now it was fine as long as it's not mouldy

No because it’s not just about ducks.... bread is basically empty calories for them - it’s like feeding them mars bars. Fills them up but doesn’t give them the right nutrition.

The thing about bread is also, that any uneaten bread will sink to the bottom of the pond and go mouldy down there which has all sorts of negative effects on the pond life (bugs, frogs, fish etc) not just the wildfowl.

We feed our local ducks frozen (defrosted but not cooked) peas, porridge oats (againraw/uncooked) and bird seeds and they love it! Gobble it all up.
It’s not a local park though just a pond so maybe they’re not so well fed to turn their noses up at it Grin

cakeandchampagne · 25/04/2019 20:25

We raised some ducks- ours loved corn!

greathat · 25/04/2019 20:28

There's been deformed baby ducks coz the parents are so full of empty bread calories that they eat nothing with the vitamins and minerals they need. Don't feed em bread!

SneakyGremlins · 25/04/2019 20:30

I might not be an expert on feeding ducks but I'm smart enough to take the food out of the bloody tin first! Grin Or should I throw a tin opener in too?

We always just grab some frozen from the freezer but they defrost by the time we get to the park after a walk. Be warned they love them and swans go a bit mad trying to get to them.

Orangeballon · 25/04/2019 20:35

In 2010, the year of the very cold winter, I gave the ducks a bag of frozen peas, they never eat them despite there being very little other food around.

ForalltheSaints · 25/04/2019 20:35

It would not take too long to defrost, surely. They were John Lennon's vegetable of choice, incidentally- he asked that we give peas a chance.

notsosureaboutthatthough · 25/04/2019 20:38

The ducks embarrassed me once when I went down all smug with a lettuce.
Old lady beside me, feeding white bread goes “ LETTUCE.. they are ducks not rabbits love...”

Nah they love it. I say. Start lobbing lettuce leaves in, the wind catching them and sending them all ways. Then the ducks looked at me like I had shat in their pond.

Lettuce ignored.

Old lady chuckling away beside me. Nearly bombed her in.
