To think long painted nails look unattractive

I am prepared to be shot down in flames but when I look at long painted nails on anyone I just think they look ugly and claw like. I just don’t get why anyone would spend money to make their hands look like that. I think short or medium length painted nails look nice but not long ones.

I love mine, I have short stumpy little hands and having long painted nails makes my hands look much more elegant.

SimonJT · 23/04/2019 09:30

I have a genuine fear of long nails, if the white bit is showing they are too long. It’s to the point where I request a certain person when I get my hair cut as I wouldn’t be able to let a long nailed person touch me.

Raspberrytruffle · 23/04/2019 09:33

Now now op put your claws back in Grin

Raspberrytruffle · 23/04/2019 09:34

I dont give a shit I love my disgusting long acrylic nails , grate for scratching the old rump Wink

PhillipeFellope · 23/04/2019 09:34

My experience in my circle of people I see with nails decorated with art, are normally the ones with either little spare money each month (and I hear / see their struggles) and/or ones that are always busy and don’t have time for meeting friends / family etc but can get their nails done fortnightly.

Aah right, I see. Yes. So they're either poor, and should therefore be not have their nails done because you don't value it. Or they don't make time for you. Maybe it's because you come across as really judgemental?

In my experience Raymond if a nail tech takes two and a half hours, the customer is either having a really elaborate set of nails, or she's a new nail tech who is learning. I've been having my nails done for 15+ years. It's never taken 2.5 hours, ever.

I appreciate a nice set of manicured nails and a polished look could make people feel better (as would someone highlighting their hair). But the glitter, gems, piercings and different colours looks OTT. It comes across as “look at me”.

Why should they not want people to look at them? What's wrong with being looked at? Your very long hair probably makes people look at you, or are they looking at you differently because your very long hair isn't what you consider to be a negative or OTT?

PookieDo · 23/04/2019 09:35

I used to have long acrylic nails and it really was because if I didn’t, I thought I looked underdone and shabby. All my friends had nice nails and I didn’t want to have horrible normal nails
Slowly over the years I’ve cared less and less about them
I taught myself gel nails but I am bored of doing them now too

They are hard to keep clean but not impossible.

PhillipeFellope · 23/04/2019 09:38

My irritation comes from women constantly feeling like they need to beautify themselves (as opposed to feeling content with their look / bodies / appearance) Part of a much bigger societal problem

Aah so now it's feminism which is why you don't like them. Maybe just stop being judgemental.

Likethebattle · 23/04/2019 09:38

I had long nails on when I first got contact lenses and as a pp wondered i use both hands. Use the index fingers of both hands at the same time to ‘pinch’ them to get them out, it’s actually easy.

Likethebattle · 23/04/2019 09:40

Also 2.5 hours? Mine take an hour at the most when I get them done.

PocaMiseria · 23/04/2019 09:45

Another vote and some Flowers for @claraschu : I totally agree with you and simply can't work out why others are prepared to spend time and money on something so bloomin' inconvenient, unhygienic and impractical.
And I also agree with the PP who said they don't even varnish because as soon as you get a chip it looks terrible.
I once had a false nail to protect a badly broken natural one, but when I discovered the damage that it did to the nail I swore I would never get another one.
It's a vicious circle, isn't it: fake nails 'cos your natural ones are weak, short or damaged, but then you have to keep having them done because your natural nails never get the chance to improve.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 23/04/2019 09:47

Another one who likes claraschu's post. As an artist (strictly a hobby and amateur, not trained professional) this will make me feel better the next time my hands are covered in charcoal dust!

This thread made me realize I'm quite squeamish about hands. When nails are not pristine clean or are all different lengths it makes me shudder. And to each their own, but I'd never want to wear acrylics (I'm not a fan of 'false' anything). Doesn't mean I don't have my own vanities though: mine are just different. I invest in hand creams and crystal nail files to seal the ends, treat my cuticles with exfoliating cream every week and and push them back, and use oils on a daily basis to keep them supple and moisturized. Nails no longer than 3-4 mm. I can't bear my hands feeling dried out with split nails or dirt under them (ugh!) and raggy cuticles.

Guess we all have our little foibles!

Tinkoschminko · 23/04/2019 09:51

Yeah I feel weird about them and how restrictive they are. Couple that with a pair of high heels and a dearth of pockets and you’ve got your perfect immobilised woman.

tanpestryfirescreen · 23/04/2019 09:54

My friend is a Dr and she says the people with the dirtiest bottoms are the women with longs nails where they can't wipe properly....

What specialism is that? A doctor who measures the amount of excrement on anuses?

Kaykay06 · 23/04/2019 09:57

It’s one of those things, if you don’t like them then don’t like them but some women do enjoy getting their nails done and find them attractive & make them feel nice.

I’m a nurse and we aren’t allowed fake/painted nails. Some of the other women at work get theirs done for holidays though. But for me I never paint them, they are just short and clean. The only thing I regularly get done is my eyebrows.

PregnantSea · 23/04/2019 10:03

I don't really like them either, but I think it could be some sort of subconscious jealousy that they don't need to use their hands much. If they had to do everything that I do with my hands then they wouldn't be able to have such long nails. I know I sound completely crazy. It's been a long day.

Ellapaella · 23/04/2019 10:04

Interested to know how a doctor knows who has the dirtiest arses. As a nurse I don't know many doctors who regularly check arse dirtiness.

ToeDust · 23/04/2019 10:07

I with SimonJT I really don't like them, never have since childhood - horrible teacher that had them and would grab me and dig her nails in. Also hate certain noises and the clicking and scratching of nails is horrible, as is the feeling of scraping your nail, for example when opening a car door, that gives me shivers. Also the feeling of a damaged nail catching. Yeah, I just hate nails.

Bbang · 23/04/2019 10:16

Whatever you know full well what I mean yet are simply choosing to deliberately misunderstand.

Different perspective = fine.
To challenge = fine.
To criticise = fine (respectfully and constructive).

To name call, cast aspirations on a woman’s hygiene, character, intelligence and social standing cause she has long acrylic nails. Not fine. Unnecessary and cruel, like I said women get judged enough by everyone but of solidarity and respect wouldn’t go amiss.

Personally I couldn’t care less what people have on the end of their fingers as long as they’re happy and confident that’s all that matters to me.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2019 10:18

I remember a midwife at the hospital where I had ds having long, acrylic nails. I was horrified and really surprised she was allowed them.

TheFastandCurious · 23/04/2019 10:23

I love them. I think they look elegant and I like the way women move their hands when they wear them.

I also love the way lip fillers, Botox and silver hoop earrings look though so I’m definitely in the MN minority.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/04/2019 10:29

I never get acrylic, I love having shellac polish. I am lucky when it comes to nails my own are strong, I filed monthly to keep them medium but they rarely break.

YouKnowILoveYou · 23/04/2019 10:33

Love my naturally long brightly painted nails 👌🏻

patchisagoodpup · 23/04/2019 10:37

Not for me but to each their own. I just can't bear the feeling of having long nails, when mine are any longer than the tops of my fingers it makes me feel a bit unkempt and unclean (not saying anyone with long nails is unclean, maybe it's a sensory thing, just hate how it feels for me!). I wouldn't date a woman with ridiculously long nails either. I would not enjoy that, iyswim Grin

headinhands · 23/04/2019 10:44

Yeah he thinner less curvy ones are lovely. But the thick ones remind me of what happens when I don't tackle my small toe nail regularly.

TildaKauskumholm · 23/04/2019 10:44

Agree, nice to be groomed with clean shortish nails, but don't like the fake look and yes it seems unhygienic.
