To think long painted nails look unattractive

I am prepared to be shot down in flames but when I look at long painted nails on anyone I just think they look ugly and claw like. I just don’t get why anyone would spend money to make their hands look like that. I think short or medium length painted nails look nice but not long ones.

I think they look cheap tbh. I also find them very old fashioned.

whiskeysourpuss · 23/04/2019 06:45

I love the way hands look when they have been used to make and do something special- gardeners, musicians, cooks, potters, painters-- these people have amazing hands.

But I am not any of those things nor do I have any desire to be any of those things & not just because I'd have to have manky nails to be those things - I've never met a gardener with clean nails or attractive hands!

claraschu · 23/04/2019 06:49

I have been having a hard time, and the fact that TheNavigator and Decormad38 liked what I said has made me tearful.

I know that I am being pathetic, but I jut wanted to say thank you for taking the trouble to post.

Gratefulbeyond103 · 23/04/2019 06:51

Yanbu. I think they look unhygienic and the person must be very lazy. How do you cook, clean etc.

Decormad38 · 23/04/2019 06:53

@claraschu sorry you are having a hard time. You are clearly creative so I hope you are channeling your worries into that.

I hate them, I especially hate the noise they make on keyboards, phones etc. Makes me feel ill!

MuseumofInnocence · 23/04/2019 06:56

While I agree, I've noticed that (as with many other things in life) there is a class and sometimes ethnic relationship. Every time I've been to the US, I've noticed that many (if not most) African American women will have these brightly coloured talons. My theory is that it evolved as a kind of relatively cheap way to express some individuality.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 23/04/2019 06:58

What claraschumann said in her beautifully eloquent post. Pianist?!

I class them as I do very high heels. A way to prevent women moving properly and adorning them as “pretty”

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 23/04/2019 06:59

clara just read you are having a hard time. I’m sorry. You have a very creative and talented mind!

GrinGrinGrin

You realise they're just nails, not oven mitts? They don't make that much difference! You can still use your hands Grin (Not usually one to promote her, but if you want to see how someone cleans with long acrylics look up Mrs Hinch)

pictish · 23/04/2019 07:01

Yanbu but taste is subjective isn’t it? I have a couple of friends who like to bling their nails and while it’s not my thing, they love them and think they look great.

GenevaMaybe · 23/04/2019 07:01

Cheap and nasty

balloonyellow · 23/04/2019 07:02

I love acrylics but only have them once a year as a ‘treat’ and to save my nails. I’m an artist so I see it as tiny little works of art on your nails, similar to tattoos. I have to admit the enormous stiletto ones are awful! Like claws

tempytemp · 23/04/2019 07:04

claraschu has it right in my opinion. I personally don't think they look pretty, but the lack of normal movement is a much bigger problem.

I have the same issue with high heels, watching women hobbling around rather than walking naturally really upsets me.

Siameasy · 23/04/2019 07:07

Horrible when they are long claws. Ok to have short ones for a special occasion. Even so, I’ve had short ones and they pissed me off. I’m also a gardener so not bothered about my hands

RaymondReddington · 23/04/2019 07:08

YANBU

I posted on a thread the other something very similar and was in the minority with my views.

Apparently having your nails look like claws, be a haven for germs and them costing a small fortune = raises your self esteem Confused

It’s the cost and time that irritates me. How have people got the time to sit for 2.5 hours to have them done?

pictish · 23/04/2019 07:08

I also agree with Clara. I think worn, working, useful hands look wonderful.

pilates · 23/04/2019 07:10

YANBU

Agree, they look cheap and tacky

PhillipeFellope · 23/04/2019 07:12

RaymondReddington it takes an absolute maximum of about an hour (maybe an hour and a half if you have lots of intricate nail art) to get a full set of acrylics put on.

Just going to leave this here

To think long painted nails look unattractive
claraschu · 23/04/2019 07:13

I am so touched by your kindness. It has really made me sob to feel people sending me support at this moment- not what I was expecting from a thread about fingernails.

I am a violinist, but I like Clara Schumann, and I was playing her trio when I chose my name a few years ago.

Sorry to derail the thread-

2cupsofcoffee · 23/04/2019 07:13

Lovely perspective, @ claraschu

pictish · 23/04/2019 07:14

Raymond - what makes one person feel good about themselves might not do for the next. Some people think the nails look polished and well presented which makes them feel likewise.

Decormad38 · 23/04/2019 07:15

@RaymondReddington yes I thought my views would be in the minority. I was sat in the hairdressers watching women have them done and other women saying how wonderful they looked. I thought ‘no they They look like painted claws.’

My friend is a Dr and she says the people with the dirtiest bottoms are the women with longs nails where they can't wipe properly....
