To think long painted nails look unattractive

I am prepared to be shot down in flames but when I look at long painted nails on anyone I just think they look ugly and claw like. I just don’t get why anyone would spend money to make their hands look like that. I think short or medium length painted nails look nice but not long ones.

YANBU to dislike them; everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't like them either.

Sparklesocks · 23/04/2019 08:12

YANBU for having a preference as long as you understand that not everyone will agree. I think people should do whatever they like with their nails.

BasilTheGreat · 23/04/2019 08:16

Be aware that there are nail bars using child slaves to do nails.

Strugglingtodomybest · 23/04/2019 08:19

I don't like them either, I agree that they look unattractive. Ah well, so long as the wearer is happy though.

Nicknacky · 23/04/2019 08:24

I have acrylics, they are just over the edge of my finger so I can still wipe my big, lift heavy weights, do gardening and they don’t slash my kids.

They take about 1 hour for an infill, 90 mins or so for a new set.

Of course, the big long things that the cheap nail bars do is a complete different cosmetic issue!

And to however said shellac is thick, it’s not. It’s much about the same as normal nail varnish, there’s really not much in it.

Pinkyyy · 23/04/2019 08:27

I like them. I think they look clean and polished, done well. I'm not one for fancy patterns or rhinestones but I love the feeling of a new set of false nails!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2019 08:30

I class them as I do very high heels. A way to prevent women moving properly and adorning them as “pretty”

Me too and they're unhygienic.

Pinkyyy · 23/04/2019 08:32

I bet you I can do anything in my high heels that you could do in a flat shoe Grin

SilentAndQuietLight · 23/04/2019 08:34

Perhaps part of my repulsion comes from the fact that I am a musician, and I see hands as very beautiful and possessed of almost magical powers to create. I hate it when people take those powers away from their own naturally beautiful and miraculous hands. I love the way hands look when they have been used to make and do something special- gardeners, musicians, cooks, potters, painters-- these people have amazing hands.

I feel the same. The value of my hands comes from the work I do with them, not from using them to signal that I buy into the current social conception of female beauty. In fact I try to avoid any accessory that actively impairs my function (long nails, wobbly shoes, shapewear). That's my priorities--but I can't pretend there aren't social consequences for refusing to participate in social demands on women's appearances.

MashedSpud · 23/04/2019 08:39

I prefer medium natural nails. Short nails make my fingers look stubby.

Pinkyyy · 23/04/2019 08:41

Why does everything always have to be about conforming to society and all that crap? People have worn their nails long and painted for years. It just so happens that some people can't keep their own nails perfect, so they wear false ones.

CherryPavlova · 23/04/2019 08:45

Hideous, unhygienic, common, in my opinion. I see them as akin to orange spray tans, stilettos with skinny jeans and hoop earrings.

I tell people who arrive to work with them to go home and remove them - totally against our dress code.

What’s wrong with a nice French polish on smooth, short, rounded nails?

Mummyoftwo91 · 23/04/2019 08:45

I have them and I like them, I keep them clean and get them done every 2 weeks so they never look outgrown, they make me feel more polished and put together.

puppymouse · 23/04/2019 08:46

I have overlays on my own nails to reinforce them and keep nail colour on that doesn't flake or chip. I choose a different colour each time and sometimes it's a muted one and sometimes bolder. I get plenty of compliments but I am very aware it isn't everyone's cup of tea. Can't say having a horse is always easy with longer nails but I have always managed. Yanbu. Really dated and tacky.

Sexnotgender · 23/04/2019 08:47

Totally agree with @claraschu so beautifully put.

Ellabella989 · 23/04/2019 08:50

I think really long nails look awful and tacky, especially the coffin shaped ones.

Nicknacky · 23/04/2019 09:06

I assume people understand that not all arcrylics are the long tacky ones that the cheap nail bars use?

Bbang · 23/04/2019 09:07

Wow 😮

Some of the things written on here, is there really any need to be so judgmental and nasty just because you don’t like something? Do women not get judged enough by everyone else.

Just let people enjoy themselves, you don’t have to like everything they do/wear.

Happyspud · 23/04/2019 09:16

Bbang, I actually think it’s good to have a different perspective on these impractical, image related pressures on women. Most women are just so used to ‘done nails’ as being essential to proper

They really are not and if you actually stop and think and look at them, they are well into the range of bizarre things women do to themselves.

Bbang · 23/04/2019 09:20

I didn’t say a different perspective wasn’t good though did I? That’s actually got nothing to do with what I said.

I simply said there is no need for name calling and just plain insulting the women that choose to get them, I prefer the perspective that you should just let people do what makes them happy and not feel the need to name call or criticise for no goood reason.

OurChristmasMiracle · 23/04/2019 09:23

Suppose nails are just like anything. You could say you don’t like the new silver/lilac/pale blue hair or “unicorn” hair.

It’s about personal choice. And whilst yabu to not like them ywbu to tell someone else they shouldn’t.

I don’t see the issue personally- so long as they aren’t doing anything to harm someone else it’s not really anyone’s business what someone does with/to themselves. Whether that’s nails/hair dye/ etc

Alsohuman · 23/04/2019 09:23

@clara, with you all the way. My mum was a former nurse who always kept her nails short and unpolished, her hands were beautiful tools.

Happyspud · 23/04/2019 09:27

And what I meant was that I think it’s ok for people to honestly say they ‘look gross’ and dirty. ‘Awful and tacky’. ‘Unhygienic’. ‘Weird’ etc when people are clacking away trying to do simple tasks. Those are the opinions that just might make one woman think ‘hmmm, I’ve never thought of them like that because I’ve always been told they are part of looking done as a woman’.

There is very good reason to challenge and criticise the things women have been conditioned to do.
