To think iPhones are too big?

blahblahblah9 · 22/04/2019 12:12

Upgraded my iPhone 6 to iPhone XR without a whole lot of thought (I know, silly me) as it was the newest model and cheaper than the XS.

AIBU to think it's way too big? Almost impossible to use one handed (holding with both hands whilst typing this) and so much heavier. Don't enjoy using it at all now as I'm always worried about dropping it.

I've since googled and there are loads of articles which say they're too big for most women's hands. If only I'd know before i bought it!

Not really sure what the point of this thread was other than to moan! Very annoying and expensive mistake.

I've just got a 6s and find that too big for my hands and I'm not a tiny handed lady. Wish they still did an SE sized one

JacquesHammer · 22/04/2019 12:17

Case with pop socket removes chance of dropping.

I also “drop” the screen to the bottom half of the screen - easier for typing

CupcakeDrama · 22/04/2019 12:17

Im the opposite, after having a 6 I could never go back to the smaller ones. My sister has an SE and it just feels odd holding it now.

LEDadjacent · 22/04/2019 12:18

Agreed. I have an SE and I’m hoping they’ll see sense and bring back a smaller phone before it dies.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 22/04/2019 12:20

Yes - SE all the way!

butteryellow · 22/04/2019 12:21

I've got the X (having had the 6 plus before, and wanting something smaller) and I still want it a touch smaller than that - I can't reach my thumb across whilst holding it one-handed. When this one's done (I change every couple of years/when something comes out I really want) I'm going to look and see what's about an inch smaller diagonally.

I'm actually starting to hanker for the days of my Nokia 8310 - tiny thing that slid into my change pocket! It's not like I watch TV on the thing, so a smaller screen wouldn't be the end of the world.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/04/2019 12:21

I've got an XR and I dont't like it, it's too big and heavy. I'm toying with the idea of an Samsung S10 as the phone feels so much nicer to use but that also means I need to sell my Apple Watch and I'm not sure what to replace it with

noblegiraffe · 22/04/2019 12:21

I need to upgrade my 5s, went to the Apple Store and the new ones are ginormous. I think I’m going to get an 8 as that didn’t physically hurt my hand to hold.

I think these days you’re supposed to type two handed with your thumbs and use headphones to chat.

Rockbird · 22/04/2019 12:25

Too big for most women's hands? Honestly. Hmm. I'm 5'2 so not massive hands-wise and I have an XS Max. No problem at all. Is it just women or small men too? I have a male friend who is 5'4. He's ok though because he's a bloke.

If it's too big for you then fine but we really don't need men's and women's phones.

TatianaLarina · 22/04/2019 12:26

They’re made for average men’s hands. You get used to them tho.

I don’t know why they don’t do ladeez versions, like watches.

Lucked · 22/04/2019 12:28

And not even room for a headphone jack. I wouldn’t mind if there were options.

I loved the SE and have got used to the 6 plus but don’t want to go bigger. They are also getting so expensive I am thinking twice about my next phone having always had iPhones.

azulmariposa · 22/04/2019 12:31

I have a dying SE. I'm hoping that they release a smaller phone next time, hopefully my phone will last till then!

MenuPlant · 22/04/2019 12:32

The fact that men and women are in average different sizes

And that most things are built for average male

Is sexist to point out!

Good job the people who made a fuss about female crash test dummies weren't afraid of being accused of sexism.

How arse about face can you get 😂😂😂

butteryellow · 22/04/2019 12:33

The overall means of hand length was 177.9mm (187.9mm for males and 167.9mm for females). In addition, the average of hand breadth (four fingers) was 79.4mm (83.6mm for males and 75.2mm for females).

So, err, yes - when we're talking about devices that are nearly 80mm wide, that 20mm difference is a huge one. Smaller phones would obviously be more comfortable.

EnglishRose13 · 22/04/2019 12:38

My friend always has to have the biggest and best models but I prefer not having the Plus versions as they're just too big for my child-sized hands!

BlackPrism · 22/04/2019 12:41

I wish I'd got the XR instead of the 8... I think it's bloody tiny. I love a massive screen though

BlackPrism · 22/04/2019 12:43

Although yes I don't know anyone who doesn't type two-handed tbh. Use both thumbs.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/04/2019 12:44

I've never typed 2 handed and I use my finger rather than thumb so I definitely need a smaller phone!

Sexnotgender · 22/04/2019 12:45

Totally agree, I went from 6 to XR and whilst I love the phone I do struggle to use it one handed.

Mari50 · 22/04/2019 12:49

I had the 6 plus before I upgraded to the XR so I’m not finding any real difference to be honest. I occasionally use my mums 6 and it feels tiny and uncomfortable. I don’t have particularly large hands, it is a stretch reaching the back screen icon when I’m on twitter though.....

MissSingerbrains · 22/04/2019 12:49

Why did you buy it without seeing it?

All phones are getting bigger, not just iPhones. You get used to it quickly.

Traveler001 · 22/04/2019 12:54

I’ve got a pop socket on mine for various reasons and an added bonus of it, is that it makes the phone easier to hold and use one handed.

GiantKitten · 22/04/2019 12:57

I upgraded from SE to 7 plus. I am 6' and have quite big hands so can just about manage - can do some things one-handed, but need 2 for typing.

Also it doesn't fit comfortably in a jeans pocket. However the extra screen size does make up for all that for me - I previously upgraded to SE from 5S, because I liked the smaller phone size, but I was finding the amount of information showing too limited. I prefer the slimness & rounded edges of the 7 plus too.

blahblahblah9 · 22/04/2019 13:08

@butteryellow 100% agree! I'd love an old school Nokia sized phone 🙈

*The fact that men and women are in average different sizes

And that most things are built for average male

Is sexist to point out!* Why's that then? It's a fact of life that most things are designed for the male form, which is actual sexism.
