To think iPhones are too big?

blahblahblah9 · 22/04/2019 12:12

Upgraded my iPhone 6 to iPhone XR without a whole lot of thought (I know, silly me) as it was the newest model and cheaper than the XS.

AIBU to think it's way too big? Almost impossible to use one handed (holding with both hands whilst typing this) and so much heavier. Don't enjoy using it at all now as I'm always worried about dropping it.

I've since googled and there are loads of articles which say they're too big for most women's hands. If only I'd know before i bought it!

Not really sure what the point of this thread was other than to moan! Very annoying and expensive mistake.

Still have a 5s which I am hanging on to for as long as I can

Shenanagins · 22/04/2019 21:05

As an aside to all my fellow SE users if the battery is the only issue, you can get this replaced quite cheaply by Apple.

fancynancyclancy · 22/04/2019 21:09

By SE is dying so will probably go for a 7 or a 8. They are too big, I like to type, hold, scroll in the same hand. I have fairly big hands & find it a struggle. I have no interest in watching tv etc on my phone so do not need a big screen

Dahlietta · 22/04/2019 21:16

Related question: what is the smallest iPhone that they make at the moment?

luckylavender · 22/04/2019 21:19

I love mine. Never had a tablet as I don't need it.

SpoonBlender · 22/04/2019 21:32

Eh. I had a 4 and went to the 6 Plus as soon as it arrived, now an
XsMax. I love the extra screen space and don't have big hands.

If I wanted a smaller phone, Apple do fall very short - I really expected a replacement for the SE to arrive. Maybe this autumn. OTOH, the SE is still a very snappy phone and you can get them at a reasonable price.

BasilTheGreat · 22/04/2019 21:35

I got small hands and love my XR. For you all who love the SE there is apparently an Se 2 in the works 😄 www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.trustedreviews.com/news/iphone-se-2-2019-price-rumours-release-date-3694225/amp

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 22/04/2019 21:36

Remember when it was a race to make phones as small as possible? Now they're getting bigger and bigger.

I hate it. I have short thumbs and small hands in general. I'd like one the size of my iPhone 4. That was a great size for me.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 22/04/2019 21:48

I'm the opposite, I got an 8+ and when I use DH's SE it's in miniature!

greenlynx · 22/04/2019 21:51

They are way too big!!!!
I have 5S at the moment and no way I could manage anything bigger. I’m average size female but have small hands. I also would love to buy iPhone to my DD but she’s small for her age with very small hands so she won’t be able to manage these big monsters. Even DH still keeps his old Nokia for this reason, he keeps mobile in his pocket so prefers it to be the small one. It doesn’t matter for me if it’s called female phone or teens phone or whatever. My shoulder bag is heavy enough already, I don’t want bigger and heavier things. I would happily sign a petition about it!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/04/2019 22:12

Also, as well as generally bigger hands, men tend to have thicker fingers and thumbs than women, so may also need the bigger 'keys' that go along with physically bigger phones to avoid constantly hitting the wrong keys with their massive sausagey phalanges.

That said, I really don't see why there couldn't be three sizes of popular models available as standard. Older kids would likely tend to choose the small, women favour the medium and men the large; however, there's absolutely no need to label them with anything other than neutral size-based model descriptors to enable all customers to simply choose whichever one they prefer, without being 'prescribed' one because of their age, sex or build.

One thing which is often overlooked is that, commonly, the bigger the phone, the higher the spec. It's pretty much the same with cars as well. For some reason, it's assumed that people with smaller hands or bodies couldn't possibly want the same level of power, quality, storage, luxury or comfort as bigger people.

RustyBear · 22/04/2019 22:23

I switched from a 6 to an XR and though I can't type one-handed on it
a) I don't want to and
b) I couldn't on my 6 either

People who constantly text with one thumb are setting themselves up for arthritic thumbs in later life, and if you're doing it so you can do something else with the other hand, you should probably be concentrating on that instead. Grin

I love my XR, for its big screen and for its battery life, as I take lots of photos on it. And Face ID seems to cope with all conditions- dark, light, sunglasses; it even coped with a fairly drastic haircut, when my PC's face recognition had a hissy fit and I had to redo it.

greenlynx · 23/04/2019 00:41

And by the way there are laptops and tablets of different sizes. No one calls them female or male laptops. Or maybe someone does?

SummerPlace · 23/04/2019 07:50

I just checked because I have a newish iPhone SE bought from a local Apple Store (not in UK) where the enthusiastic salesperson made no indication that it was being discontinued. I just looked and aren't they still available on the Apple UK site, or do they intend to discontinue them in the near future? Or, as usual,am I missing something?

SummerPlace · 23/04/2019 07:56

The SE is on the drop down menu.

their massive sausagey phalanges :o WeBuilt

butteryellow · 23/04/2019 09:14

I suspect if you designed seatbelts to the smaller standard

That's not what they're talking about - it's not just the strength of the seatbelt - it's the height and force that the air bag deploys at, it's the anchor points for the seatbelts, it's the reinforcement bars are etc. It seems to me that it shouldn't be beyond the wit of humans to make it safer for everyone who wants to use the car!

Speaking of cars, we were in the market for a new one, so we went and tried some out - most were fine and I could adjust to be comfortable, but the BMW we tried - everything was slightly too big - the seat wouldn't go up high enough, the seatbelt adjuster wouldn't go down quite low enough etc. It had clearly been designed for a larger person than me (although I admit I am short, even for a woman).

I think apple would be surprised at how big the market is for a fully featured mini-phone. lots of people would like something small enough for their pocket, and plenty of us have watches/airpods so we don't need as much from the phone screen anyway.

The SE is on the drop down menu.

That’s a useful page!

The older models only available from “authorised resellers” though.

(I got mine from an amazon merchant - presumably not authorised but ok anyway Smile)

daphine2004 · 23/04/2019 10:55

@GiantKitten I didn’t even think to look at Amazon for one. I went to Vodafone and the Carphone Warehouse, both said they won’t be getting any more in.

CustardOmlet · 23/04/2019 11:12

Love my SE, I’m dreading when it gives up as my hands are tiny!!! Eventually the SE will not upgrade, I’m just hopeful Apple come up with something new and small before this happens.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/04/2019 11:33

They've likely discovered that 'there's no call for them' based on the fact that nobody has been buying the ones that they don't actually sell....

GiantKitten · 23/04/2019 11:52

@daphine2004 I can positively recommend the amazon renewed service. I got my phone last July with 87-88% battery, I use it a lot & it’s only dropped to 84%

It was about £200 cheaper than a new one - they were still available then (it’s a 7 plus, not SE) & I’ve had no problems with it at all Smile There are lots of SEs on there atm, at very reasonable prices.

You could also look at giffgaff (I sold them my old SE) - theirs only have a 6-month guarantee though, & currently none are “very good” or “excellent” condition.

To think iPhones are too big?
Alwaysfrank · 23/04/2019 12:10

Just a quick vote for GiffGaff used phones. We now have 3 in the house, all of which were rated "good", the lowest priced range, and you would be hard pushed to find any marks/imperfections on any of the three. All three had and still have good battery health. I've been really impressed and would never take out an expensive contract for a new phone again.

Teddybear45 · 23/04/2019 12:12

I have tiny hands but have no problem using my iphone 8 plus one handed. There are accessibility functions / gestures to make it easier. Just read the instructions from the apple site.

Haggisfish · 23/04/2019 12:29

Oooh interesting. Thanks op. I love my se too.
