To think iPhones are too big?

blahblahblah9 · 22/04/2019 12:12

Upgraded my iPhone 6 to iPhone XR without a whole lot of thought (I know, silly me) as it was the newest model and cheaper than the XS.

AIBU to think it's way too big? Almost impossible to use one handed (holding with both hands whilst typing this) and so much heavier. Don't enjoy using it at all now as I'm always worried about dropping it.

I've since googled and there are loads of articles which say they're too big for most women's hands. If only I'd know before i bought it!

Not really sure what the point of this thread was other than to moan! Very annoying and expensive mistake.

You need this book, OP.

I’ve just gone from a 7 to an XR. I don’t mind the size but the Face ID thing is pissing me off... it doesn’t work in the dark, it doesn’t work in bright sunlight, it doesn’t work when I’ve got sunglasses on, it doesn’t work if I’m lying down... Touch ID was so much better, why fix what wasn’t broken, just so they could do away with the home button?

There are ways to work around the size... if you swipe down the centre of the screen at the bottom it brings the top of the screen down. If you hold down the 🌐 symbol you have the option of bringing the keyboard to the left or right to make it easier to type one-handed.

Mine works perfectly in all of those situations. Go into settings and let it rescan your face.

I upgraded from a 6S to an XR and I rather like the additional screen area. I don't have a problem holding it, but it is a bit snug in my back pocket when I'm wearing jeans. Overall I love it.

April241 · 22/04/2019 13:31

I had an 8 plus, moved huawei mate 20 pro and am waiting on an XR to be delivered (having trying android for the 4th time and realising, again, I really dont like it)

I prefer a bigger screen now.

Spam you need rockbird to answer your question as to why she thinks it's sexist to say women's hands are on average smaller than men's hands.

blahblahblah9 · 22/04/2019 14:02

@AngeloMysterioso I never knew you could move the keyboard to the side - amazing! Thanks for sharing. This will definitely make things a bit easier 👍🏼

@stargirl1701 I think I read an article based on that book recently. Very depressing!

Far too big. My current SE is probably on the way out as it’s not as it used to be, but when I tried to upgrade found out that they’ve discontinued them😭

I have just got a sim only contract as I can’t find any smaller phones that I like and I’d read that Apple were going to release a phone of a similar size to an SE. Apparently this should have been released last October but nothing yet, so I wonder if it was a hoax?!

CordeliaGoode · 22/04/2019 14:15

I have tiny hands (I’m 5ft) and the Xs max. Love it, best phone I’ve had!

wombat1a · 22/04/2019 14:32

Must admit I don't understand the problem with crash test dummies being average man sized. I would much rather have 50kg DD being restrained by a belt that was tested for a 90Kg man than my 90Kg DS having to rely on one designed for a 60kg woman. That seems to make lots of sense to me.

DubiousGoals · 22/04/2019 14:36

Oh I much prefer the bigger ones, got an 8 Plus now & before this had a 6 Plus. My work phone is an SE and I hate it! The keyboard's so small it takes me 5 attempts for each word!!

MenuPlant · 22/04/2019 14:37

Wombat1a have a Google

Use of male standard dummies meant women at much higher risk of injury or death even at low speed crashes

I can't remember the stat but it was horrifying.

Does that change how you feel about it?

MenuPlant · 22/04/2019 14:39

Here's a bit from 1 article

Let’s take the 2011 Toyota Sienna as an example — it’s testing revealed that, when colliding with a barrier at a speed of just 35 mph, the female dummy in the front passenger seat registered a 20 to 40% risk of death or seriously injury. This is a substantially higher than the risk incurred for a comparable crash featuring a male test dummy. In some cases, according to tests with female dummies, small women were almost three times as likely as their average male counterparts to be seriously injured or killed.

SpamChaudFroid · 22/04/2019 14:42

Oops sorry Menu, I see we're in agreement about man-sized design.Blush

SoupDragon · 22/04/2019 14:43

but we really don't need men's and women's phones.

Good job no one suggested that then.

Saltisford · 22/04/2019 14:47

I totally agree we need handsets designed for men and women or for different sized hands at least! For example, I buy small washing up gloves so need a smaller phone! I went from an iPhone 4 to a 6 and can not operate the phone with one hand even with that feature where you double tap to shrink the display - my thumb still doesn’t reach. When I went to try new phones, the display models were all attached to the stand with a big attachment on the back so you couldn’t even practise holding them. I asked the guy about smaller phones for smaller hands but he just looked at me like I was a right nob. To help, I get one of those ring things to put on the back but still end up with pain in my hand after a while!!

wombat1a · 22/04/2019 14:51

Menu - I get that but that doesn't discount my point about I'd rather than DD held in by a belt rated to 90Kg than DS held by one rated to 60Kg.

I suspect if you designed seatbelts to the smaller standard and then ran the same tests with male crash test dummies then the increase in serious injury will be far higher than 20-40%. In fact if the belt failed to hold - remember it won't be rated as being able to hold DS then he is far more like to die because he might as well not be wearing the belt.

Until we have the situation that we have cars for heavier people (with higher rated seat belts) and car for lighter people with lower rated seat belts it makes far more sense to me to use the higher rating.

DGRossetti · 22/04/2019 14:53

All phones are getting bigger, not just iPhones.

Because people are getting older and the tech giants are terrified they'll have to stop using their shinies ...

VioletCharlotte · 22/04/2019 14:56

I've got an iPhone 7 and my work phone is an SE. SE feels too small and find myself squinting at the screen. The 7 is perfect. DS has one of the newer ones and it feels too big.

wonkylegs · 22/04/2019 14:59

I loved the size of my iPhone 4 and would be very happy if they went back to that size!
I have a 6 now but haven't upgraded it as I find DHs 8 too big - for my hands (I have tiny child sized hands) but also my pockets and bags
It's not a sexism thing we don't need girls phones and boys phones but it's also important to realise what works for a 6 foot man with giant hands won't necessarily work for his 4'11" rather petite wife (me)

MenuPlant · 22/04/2019 15:02

Wombat1a seriously?

OK then 👍🏻

(flabbergasted! Women more likely to die using everyday equipment designed for average men... That's fine and better even as the equipment that kills them is bigger and stronger...! Better DD is killed than DS and incapable of understanding that good design would protect a much wider range of people better... Women /girls are so low value aren't we, if even women are happy for us to die at higher rates when it's avoidable, as its impirtant things are optimised for men... Crikey! Suggestion... Don't tell your daughter you feel that way!)

iMatter · 22/04/2019 15:04

I agree.

I have an iPhone SE and I'm sticking with it as long as I can. I have really small hands and can only use the SE single handed. I'm not sure I could get any of the other models in the back pocket of my jeans either.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 22/04/2019 15:05

Switched from SE to iPhone 8+ recently dud t realise just how big they were.

MenuPlant · 22/04/2019 15:05

They are using them a bit more now.

Probably write to manufacturers if you feel passionately enough about this being unfair to men.
