Smokers are selfish and clearly not very clever

Today I tried to enjoy the sun but everywhere I went there were smokers puffing away in front of my kids and their own children. It was at the cafe, ice cream store, restaurants, park. Absolutely disgusting. It's hot and my family want to enjoy outside spaces too.

I dont know anyone that smokes. Smokers must have pretty low levels of intelligence if they are willing to slowly kill their bodies even though there is loads of information out there regarding the harms. Why do people smoke still? And do they just not give a damn about smoking in front of children? What goes through their head when they light up in front of a baby in a pram?

Haven't read the whole thread. Have we had the defensive smokers saying that non-smokers are selfish because the outside space belongs to the smokers and they have been out there in the cold all winter but the moment the weather turns nice, the selfish non-smokers want to come outside and steal their space? I paraphrase, but that is the general gist.

Cherylshaw · 21/04/2019 22:22

You sound unhinged, i don't allow my children near people smoking, i also don't allow them near drunk people, i keep them in the inside away from cars, i don't let them run towards dogs. It's my job to do that, people can do what they want, smoke, drink , drive etc i don't let it get me in a rage if wee Barbara is smoking near me or Jimmy is pished, they are living their life, i just move along and take my kids with me

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 21/04/2019 22:22

BossAssBitch and people can die from talking to people who have eaten peanuts.

Dont really get your point?

Spinnaret · 21/04/2019 22:23

I posted a thread last year about people lighting up next to us while we were eating, and got firmly told my place was inside and my children needed to stop being so delicate.

Sagradafamiliar · 21/04/2019 22:24

Yanbu. Its fucking disgusting and I'm sick of breathing it in and I'm sick of my children having to breathe that crap in. Smokers' rights to be antisocial are more important than the health of everyone around them though, we must tiptoe around it and not judge.

Rumboogie · 21/04/2019 22:24

I’d like to see it made illegal in public places, so they have to do it inside their own houses with the doors shut. That would protect the rest of us and our right to clean air and a healthy environment

However it would not protect us against the curse of smoke from woodburners - 40 times more carcinogenic than fag smoke and the PM2.5 contributing to the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, stroke etc. - this stuff entering our houses through closed doors and windows.

Fag smokers and wood burning folk are not unintelligent, just selfish deniers, (as we all are when we are doing things we know are bad for us)

DaisysStew · 21/04/2019 22:24

Spinnaret

Why post on a thread that you can’t be arsed reading?

Yoozanaim · 21/04/2019 22:24

A ban on smoking except inside one's own home is long overdue. I believe it will happen soon. It is a horrible habit, and not comparable to driving - we drive to get places - most of us don't drive for the thrill of it. Smoking is solely a habit that gives the user pleasure - and no one else. And stained teeth and yellow fingers. And cancer. Can't wait til we all have electric cars - then the smokers can't use the 'but cars' comparison.

AngeloMysterioso · 21/04/2019 22:25

Spinnaret

Quite right. Smokers get priority over all outside everywhere, and people who don’t smoke and don’t like it should just shut up and fuck off back indoors even if it’s swelteringly hot because IT’S LEGAL SO FUCK YOU.

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 21/04/2019 22:27

I would quite like smoking banned altogether. But, op is still extremely judgemental.

You can disagree with the OP but not think that outside spaces should be reserved for smokers only.

AngeloMysterioso · 21/04/2019 22:27

Fag smokers... are not unintelligent

I dunno, I’d say intellingence and spending money to knowingly inhale foul-smelling carcinogenics for no good reason are mutually exclusive.

BossAssBitch · 21/04/2019 22:28

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead if you cannot ustand something so simple I really don’t have the time to explain it to you. Are you always such hard work?

forever390 · 21/04/2019 22:28

To clarify: I was outside on outside tables in the grounds of a well known chain cafe. Several people sat near me and smoked. It was a hot day. Everyone was out and enjoying the weather.

The other smoking incident took place on the beach. The lady in question was sunbathing with her kid and family. And drinking rose from a bottle. And all adults were chain smoking. She was several steps away from me but the wind blew the smoke in my face.

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 21/04/2019 22:31

I'm sick of inconsiderate smokers. Not everyone wants to breathe in shit because of their crap habit.
I personally don't understand why anyone tries it in the first place, but then again I don't know their circumstances.

SachaStark · 21/04/2019 22:33

We need to move towards an absolutely non-smoking society in the UK. Other countries already implementing this have got the right idea. We need to aim to make smoking very invisible to younger generations to de-normalise it.

An all-public-spaces ban would be very helpful with this. It shouldn’t be the norm for every public space to be filled with people smoking.

And no, it’s really not comparable to other potentially harmful activities, because there is absolutely NO physical requirement for humans to smoke anything. It’s such a fucking weird concept.

And I agree with a PP about why on earth you would start smoking in the 21st century. Yes, I understand addiction, but why begin nowadays? What is the actual point?

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 21/04/2019 22:34

if you cannot ustand something so simple I really don’t have the time to explain it to you. Are you always such hard work?

I don't think so, are you?

BossAssBitch · 21/04/2019 22:35

SachaStark totally agree with you

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/04/2019 22:36

Shit... that means non-smokers need to stay inside because the smokers have claimed "outside" to be theirs

Sounds fair enough to me. When smoking was allowed inside you all moaned because you wanted to be inside. Now smoking isn’t allowed inside you all want to be outside. Make your fucking minds up.

MitziK · 21/04/2019 22:36
  1. That stepping outside and being able to just stop and stare into the distance is the only way I can shut the overall shitness of my life off for five minutes or mull over a problem. Fag breaks with friends are a fucking lifeline at times, because you are there to get that moment outside and not be anything but yourself.

  2. I'm too much of a coward to kill myself quickly.

  3. Yes, I am selfish and yes, I am stupid.

  4. I am also kind and very sad about many things.

  5. Are you happy now you've got that off your chest?

  6. I am now going to light up another.

MissLadyM · 21/04/2019 22:37

I used to smoke and stopped when I really wasn't enjoying it anymore. I also have a PhD and think you should fuck off!

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 21/04/2019 22:37

The lady in question was sunbathing with her kid and family. And drinking rose from a bottle. And all adults were chain smoking. She was several steps away from me but the wind blew the smoke in my face.

So essentially just a woman having drink on a day out. Not the only adult there in charge of the kids, not quite what you described before.

I dont smoke and I have never been sat a few steps from someone and had full on smoke in my face.

I very much doubt this happened to you several times today.

Tinkoschminko · 21/04/2019 22:37

People do it with full understanding of the risk because we can be quite self-sabotaging. It’s why Death was always a really popular brand. It’s why Burger King adverts work. We’re weird.

Except she was in a fucking cafe

Well she can’t have been in a fucking cafe as no smoking is allowed in fucking cafes.
