Smokers are selfish and clearly not very clever

Today I tried to enjoy the sun but everywhere I went there were smokers puffing away in front of my kids and their own children. It was at the cafe, ice cream store, restaurants, park. Absolutely disgusting. It's hot and my family want to enjoy outside spaces too.

I dont know anyone that smokes. Smokers must have pretty low levels of intelligence if they are willing to slowly kill their bodies even though there is loads of information out there regarding the harms. Why do people smoke still? And do they just not give a damn about smoking in front of children? What goes through their head when they light up in front of a baby in a pram?

MitziK Flowers

I feel you mate. That couple of minutes out just to stop and clear your head can be a life saver. Think I’ll join you 🚬

goodbyestranger · 21/04/2019 22:40

Plenty of doctors smoke.

IckyTummy · 21/04/2019 22:41

Alcoholism has killed more members of my (large) family than smoking, and more people smoked than drank. The alcohol abusers also affected the health of others far more, by creating an unsafe and occasionally violent atmosphere with high levels of emotional abuse. I'd like to add that my family are very intelligent and many worked in medical fields and had years of higher education.

A puff or two of second hand smoke is hardly going to harm your baby if you keep them away from it for the most part. Get over yourself.

SachaStark · 21/04/2019 22:42

@Alexa, I don’t think it’s a case of “making up our fucking minds” with regard to indoors/outside. More, it would be nice to have the freedom to move through the world anywhere without having to be bothered by other people’s unnecessary smoke.

Plus, like I said, we really need to aim towards making smoking invisible to the general public to de-normalise it.

Acis · 21/04/2019 22:42

Come off it, AlexaAmbidextra. People like to be indoors when the weather's bad, and like to be outdoors when the weather's good. It self-evidently has nothing to do with being indecisive, it's simply human nature. You know that perfectly well, surely you don't seriously think it's because people can't make their minds up.

Stoic123 · 21/04/2019 22:42

It’s just about being considerate.

If you smoke... keep a bit of distance. If you have kids....move them away if they are making loud noise. If you are very large... book two seats. If you are listening to music/a film... wear headphones.

No need to judge anyone for being a smoker, parent, obese, music lover etc ... other than their impact on others.

GreenTulips · 21/04/2019 22:42

When I was young people smoked
In cars
At home
At the cinema
In the bus
In shops
In pubs
In school (yes on the balcony)
On the school trip bus
In theatres
In clubs
Don’t remember smokers in church though!!

So you already have all these spaces - so now smoking outside in a public space is no longer acceptable? How about we ban all non smokers inside?

fortunatelynot · 21/04/2019 22:44

T S Eliot smoked.

That is all I will say.

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/04/2019 22:45

non-smokers are selfish because the outside space belongs to the smokers and they have been out there in the cold all winter but the moment the weather turns nice, the selfish non-smokers want to come outside and steal their space? I paraphrase, but that is the general gist.

It’s true though isn’t it? This is precisely what happens.

Alsohuman · 21/04/2019 22:45

Non smokers don’t want to sit outside in the snow but smokers have no choice. The moment the sun shines smokers want to sit outside so the poor buggers who smoke are supposed to go - where? If inside’s good enough for you when it’s cold, OP, sit there when the sun’s out too.

Kel801 · 21/04/2019 22:46

OP you sound horrid and I wish people like you would be banned from public places

Dotty1970 · 21/04/2019 22:47

I think you've just made yourself look like YOU have low intelligence 😂

julensaor · 21/04/2019 22:51

Read some scientific papers people. Might want to read a few on the old caffeine fix you were partaking in OP, if you are so inclined to look for answers as to why people do what they do. There as many papers on caffeine as there are nicotine, but be objective (if you can...sigh).

I have a licence but am a nervous driver You should be banned, you are clearly too low in IQ for driving, please don't subject the rest of us to your nervous foibles (sarcasm, in case you don't get it).

@Tinkoschminko Addictions are quite common in highly intelligent people. They’re often used as a crutch to stem a disquiet mind. Intelligence isn’t related to objectively rational thinking and most smokers could tell you that they love it and that they’d never start if they had the chance again in the same breath - it’s that cognitive dissonance that makes it so difficult to stop. I think that is really well said. And it applies to many other addictions, not just smoking.

Acis · 21/04/2019 22:51

Of course smokers have a choice. They have the whole of the great outdoors to smoke in, they don't have to sit or stand right next to other people and blow their smoke all over them. And, of course, no-one is holding a gun to their heads and making them smoke.

Yes, nasty selfish non-smokers, wanting to enjoy the sunshine and breathe clean air at the same time.

Fucking greedy bastards.

SachaStark · 21/04/2019 22:52

But that’s absolutely correct, @GreenTulips, because now those places can all be enjoyed without people having to be worried about unnecessary smoke.

Hence, the next move should be to secure outdoor public spaces for the enjoyment of everybody without having to be worried about unnecessary smoke.

People could still smoke cigarettes on private property, so what’s the problem?

Rumboogie · 21/04/2019 22:53

Plenty of doctors smoke.

Actually they don't. Though plenty of nurses do. And there are well documented reasons for this. However I do not want to be flamed.

SachaStark · 21/04/2019 22:55

To be fair, T S Eliot also wrote “Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat”. So...

Ineweverything · 21/04/2019 22:56

'Enjoying' the sun - I assume you were all wearing hats and SPF 30+ to obviate the risk of skin cancer.

forever390 · 21/04/2019 22:59

Factor 50 actually. And in the shade.

Alsohuman · 21/04/2019 23:00

Yes, nasty selfish smokers, spending all winter out in the rain, snow and cold and the minute the sun shines all the non smokers object to them being where they’ve always been.

Selfish bastards.

We don’t live in Chicago - or even the US.

NaturatintGoldenChestnut · 21/04/2019 23:06

Come to the countryside. It's so quiet and peaceful.
