Smokers are selfish and clearly not very clever

Today I tried to enjoy the sun but everywhere I went there were smokers puffing away in front of my kids and their own children. It was at the cafe, ice cream store, restaurants, park. Absolutely disgusting. It's hot and my family want to enjoy outside spaces too.

I dont know anyone that smokes. Smokers must have pretty low levels of intelligence if they are willing to slowly kill their bodies even though there is loads of information out there regarding the harms. Why do people smoke still? And do they just not give a damn about smoking in front of children? What goes through their head when they light up in front of a baby in a pram?

Trouble is lots of people do light up round children. Just because some of you don't that doesn't help me today.

Sometimes because of the actions of some people we need to stop something even if others behave ok with it. That's why I think we need a ban. Some people wouldn't kill kids if they drove their cars at 90mph past a school... there will be skilled drivers, those with a bit of good luck, but many of us would lose control and crash into a ball of flames. That's why that risky behaviour isn't allowed.

I hate it too and agree that non smokers and children have the right to enjoy the good weather too.

I have to say, I can't understand why people start smoking. I get it's addictive etc but I'm 40 and all my life the dangers have been known and well advertised so why start?

KateyKube · 21/04/2019 21:54

I agree OP, it’s antisocial and should be banned in public spaces. And it should be illegal to smoke within say 10ft of a child.

Bloocy · 21/04/2019 21:56

You’re being ridiculous. Sitting in a smoking area and complaining about smokers is the same as going to a dog walking park and complaining that the dogs are off lead.

If you don’t like it then go somewhere else.

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:57

Read the full thread. I asked the question re intelligence, it was proven wrong tonight, I accept that. Move on from that point. I learnt something tonight.

And how would you police that? Would there be volunteers on the street with a tape measure? What happens if I’m smoking on my own property and child walks past about 8 feet away? What then?

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:58

Since when was "outside" the smoking area?! Shit... that means non-smokers need to stay inside because the smokers have claimed "outside" to be theirs

OP posts:
Katterinaballerina · 21/04/2019 21:58

Your children will suffer more damage if you live near a busy road or they go to school near one than from walking past smokers in the open air.

Asta19 · 21/04/2019 21:58

That's why I think we need a ban

Well you thinking that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen! If it means that much to you, go and live in South Korea. They have both indoor and outdoor smoking bans! It was a fricking nightmare for me! And a reason I won’t go back there!

Bloocy · 21/04/2019 21:59

Since when was "outside" the smoking area

Since they banned smoking inside. In any establishment, you’re asked to smoke outside. Therefore it’s the smoking area by proxy.

forever390 · 21/04/2019 22:00

To those saying I have a risk because I do x, y, z... you drive cars too, live near busy roads and eat doughnut and drink wine... AND you smoke so your risk is increased even more!

OP posts:
RubberTreePlant · 21/04/2019 22:01

Why do people drink?

Speed?

Eat junk food?

Sunbathe?

Ranting that everyone is "of low intelligence" because they've annoyed you with habits that are also self-harming isn't a very nuanced analysis.

RubberTreePlant · 21/04/2019 22:02

Making you age early and get skanky yellow nails and lines round your mouth. And paying lots of money for it!!!!

Maybe take a few deep breaths?

You can count me out of the doughnuts duckie!

Vulpine · 21/04/2019 22:03

I agree. smokers are dumb

ilovebronn · 21/04/2019 22:03

Earlier I was sat enjoying a drink in a beer garden, my 12 week old ds at the side of me in pram. The couple on the next table were smoking. I could smell it but as far as I know, smoke smell is not harmful? The smoke was nowhere near us really. I could smell it and all I thought was god I'd could kill for a fag to go with my first g&t in a year. Maybe I'm of low intelligence but I can't see how people smoking in an open space would harm those around them?

KateyKube · 21/04/2019 22:03

And how would you police that?
Common sense? Decent people don’t light up next to a child. If it’s illegal then people are more likely to think twice and apply common sense. And it doesn’t matter if you’re on your own property - the law applies regardless of whose property you’re on.

Lovestruk · 21/04/2019 22:03

Id love a donut right now Cake

Asta19 · 21/04/2019 22:05

Honestly, I think Japan has the best system I have seen. Smoking outside is illegal other than at designated smoking areas, which are few and far between. So would suit the OP. But, indoor places are allowed to have smoking areas, this varies from place to place but there are plenty of cafes and restaurants non smokers can go without being bothered by smoke, but equally plenty of places smokers can go and smoke in comfort. Big shopping centres, even some departments stores, will have a sealed off room far away from everything else, for the smokers to go. So no smokers huddling around the entrance. It works for everyone.

RubberTreePlant · 21/04/2019 22:05

Some of you sound so silly. Comparing relatively low risk things that affect nobody to your high risk activity that bothers many people

WE sound silly? Have you read your first post back?

And I don't think speeding, drinking etc are "low risk", as it happens.

Illy603 · 21/04/2019 22:06

OP, you’re entire rant has been aimed at the general “unintelligent” smoking population when really what you wanted to say was “one ignorant bastard smoked beside my baby today”

We’re not all awful, heinous pricks who would happily blow our smoke in a babies face.

Next time just kindly ask them not to smoke beside your baby. You’d probably find them to be quite understanding and move away once made aware that there was a baby in close proximity (and if they’d noticed this and consciously sparked up still, they ARE unintelligent and quite despicable)

Thegoodthere · 21/04/2019 22:06

OP, I agree with you. All the people whinging about it being addictive - well, don't start. I grew up on a council estate but I never smoked because I knew it was a dangerous disgusting habit. If you take it up because you want to be "cool" well more fool you.

FurryDogMother · 21/04/2019 22:06

Just stop having bloody children if you're so concerned about the impact your choices have on other people, or other people's choices have on you. Or, you could just live and let live.
