To smoke in my own garden

LittleBear4 · 21/04/2019 16:54

I am a smoker. I smoke 10 fags a day and I'm not planning on giving it up yet (one day!).

In smoke in my garden, I've got two neighbours either side and one every time I'm smoking will come out and say 'it stinks out here' and will start to cough loudly.

It's really getting on my nerves, I can't move down the end of the garden because it's tiny and would make no difference at all but AIBU to hate the passive aggressive comments when I'm smoking in my garden?

My neighbour smokes in her garden. I would never comment but the kids shout, "x is smoking again...it stinks!" Truth is, it does stink. You 'll never get non smokers enjoying the smell of your fags...sorry.

LittleBear4 · 21/04/2019 17:34

I find it hysterical that people are expecting me to smoke in my home with children rather than outside. If I came on this thread and said I smoked in my house despite having children I'd be torn to pieces.

You’re allowed to smoke in your garden, your neighbours are allowed to comment that it makes the air stink.

SabineUndine · 21/04/2019 17:35

I think the trouble is that smokers genuinely don't realise how smoking smells to non-smokers. I used to live in a second floor flat and I always knew when someone was smoking at the bus stop outside the front garden because I could smell it. Is it possible for you to go down the far end of your garden to smoke?

Prequelle · 21/04/2019 17:36

Why don't you build yourself a little smoking hut.

dreichuplands · 21/04/2019 17:36

What are you looking for from this thread OP?

bigchris · 21/04/2019 17:36

Oh come on, only on mumsnet ,they come out every time she smokes ! To comment, it is rude,

Her op says they come out not already out

exLtEveDallas · 21/04/2019 17:36

What a load of old bollocks. Your neighbour is a twat. Just ignore them. Or play music/wear earphones the next time you go out for a fag so you can't hear them. You are doing nothing wrong.

greatbigwho · 21/04/2019 17:36

TBH if you cared that much I'd be expecting you to not smoke, but hey ho.

formerbabe · 21/04/2019 17:36

I'd like to know what's so special about your children that you don't want them to breathe in your smoke but everyone else's kids can

Thank the Lord!

There is no non-peeing section of a pool and similarly there isn't a magic enclosure outdoors for cigarette smoke. Smoke indoors and enjoy your garden without inflicting the stench on everyone else.
Neighbours' smoke gets in any open windows so when OP goes out to 'enjoy a smoke in the garden' no-one else can be outside or have their windows open without also passively smoking- does a smoker's right to smoke overrule theirs not to? Should they just have to go indoors and shut their windows whenever OP chooses to indulge in his/her filthy habit?
Smoke indoors with your windows shut, or better still, give up. Your wallet and lungs will thank you!
Lucky the neighbours aren't asthmatic and in serious danger of having an attack triggered. Their comments are correct - smoke DOES stink.
If you want to smoke, it's your choice but don't inflict it on others.

lboogy · 21/04/2019 17:37

My neighbours smoke and it ruins by enjoyment of the garden. I don't blame them for complaining. Why can't you smoke at the front of your house ?

bigchris · 21/04/2019 17:37

Formerbabe because it's OUTSIDE, in the open air

The smoking ban was only for inside for a reason fgs

JacquesHammer · 21/04/2019 17:38

Yeah but you can’t really partake of an antisocial habit then complain about your neighbours being antisocial Grin

Travis1 · 21/04/2019 17:38

Laughing at the person who knows no one under 50 who smokes. Ever walked through a city centre on a Saturday night? Most of those standing out smoking are in the 20-35 age bracket.

OP I’d pop some music on when I’m out or an audiobook. It’s part and parcel of living in built up areas. Our neighbour and her son smoke, the also only do it in the garden so sometimes we get a whiff when we’re out or if the windows are open. It’s not the end of the world. They put up
With my cats using their garden as a through road to the woods I put up with their smoking and in harmony we all live 🤷🏻‍♀️

AngeloMysterioso · 21/04/2019 17:38

I find it hysterical that people are expecting me to smoke in my home with children rather than outside.

I find it hysterical that you think you have a valid reason not to quit smoking in spite of the fact that you have children. If you’re not happy for them to breathe in your smoke why the hell should anybody else have to?

Fairylea · 21/04/2019 17:39

I hate smoking. I’d hate to live next door to someone that smokes.

My mum had copd caused by years of smoking and it was fucking horrible. If you don’t know about it look it up. People always think about lung cancer with smoking but copd is more common and truly awful. You essentially suffocate as you lose lung capacity as you get older.

Millie2018 · 21/04/2019 17:39

LittleBear ignore the anti smoking brigade. My neighbours smoke and it doesn’t bother me or my children at all. About 80% of the staff at the nursery DD attends clearly smoke, doesn’t bother me. You should be able to do whatever you please in your own garden provided it’s legal.

werideatdawn · 21/04/2019 17:39

Do you genuinely not care that you are inflicting that upon people at least 10 times a day? I would hate to think my neighbours felt they couldn't use their gardens because of something I did. The least you can do is suck it up and endure the comments. You won't inflict it on your own kids but everyone else is fair game. It's outrageous.

ICantEvenThinkStraight · 21/04/2019 17:40

YANBU to smoke in your garden, but YABVVU to think that that means it doesn't affect them. Smoke stinks, and it travels. It will drift in their open windows and onto their washing and make it smell. You won't notice it much, if at all because you already smell of smoke and you can't smell it or yourself. Your non smoking neighbours will though and they will hate it. You should, if you care about them, find a way to do it as far from them as possible.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 21/04/2019 17:40

OO "I find it hysterical that people are expecting me to smoke in my home with children rather than outside. If I came on this thread and said I smoked in my house despite having children I'd be torn to pieces."

So give up then! Otherwise stop bitching about your neighbours - if you have the right to smoke in your garden, then they also have the right to dislike it and complain about it whilst in theirs. Grow up!

JacquesHammer · 21/04/2019 17:40

Quite. Like commenting on bad smells?

formerbabe · 21/04/2019 17:40

Formerbabe because it's OUTSIDE, in the open air

Yes, the smoking ban is indoors but you can smoke in your own house fgs. The neighbours can smell it...it's vile. It's anti social. If you choose to smoke then keep the consequences of that to yourself and your own family..it's your choice.

PookieDo · 21/04/2019 17:41

My neighbours smoked a lot more than you and there were 2 of them doing it - I don’t even mind the passing whiff of a cigarette (ex smoker) but when it is so close and intense it does drive you mad. I could never have washing nearby or windows open. It’s not like something you can predict either ‘right it’s 3pm I will go indoors before the smoking begins’ as it happens TO you

I would move down the garden. When I was a smoker I always went furthest away from people
