To hate the its nice weather so you must be outside brigade

I'll start with a bit of back story. As kids if the sun poked out even a little bit mum was in the garden & we had to be as well. We were not allowed back indoors except to use the bathroom all day and i have memories of feeling unwell from the heat and like i couldnt escape.

Now as an adult i enjoy nice weather but equally i dont feel the need to have to be out in it. My kids enjoy being inside as well, but they can come and go as they please too so they might take themselves off to the park or draw in the garden.

However it's amazing how many times I've been told "you should be outside with the kids, the weather is lovely" to the point that i feel guilty that we're not outside.

Add to this i get horrific, debilitating hayfever so outside can be painful....literally & my children are all very pale redheads so i worry they'll burn despite sun cream.

I actually quite liked last summer as because it was sunny for so long my mum especially let off some of the pressure of saying we should be outside as the weather was here to stay. But now we're expecting rain again in a few days shes shocked I've told me kids they can have a movie day indoors as thats what they've asked for.

I hide indoors in this weather it makes me sick. i wish i could enjoy the sun but after being out for 10 minutes i'm ready to pass out.

The sun don't agree with me bring back the winter

NerrSnerr · 21/04/2019 14:51

Just don't tell your mum your plans and she can't judge them!

RomanyQueen1 · 21/04/2019 14:52

I suppose if people are usually working it feels more of a break if they've been out in the sun.
We are off most of the time though so have been in garden all week.
Sitting in a darker room atm.

PregnantSea · 21/04/2019 14:53

Why would anyone else even care whether you sit inside or out? Some people just have to stick their noses into absolutely everything.

Just do whatever you want OP, so long as your kids get regular fresh air and exercise it really doesn't matter where they are spending their time.

NoParticularPattern · 21/04/2019 14:57

Why do people feel the need to dictate what others should or shouldn’t do? It’s a nice day, the sun is shining. You want to go outside? Great, you go ahead and do that! You have horrid hay fever as a result of said nice weather and want to stay in? Also great. Why can’t people just accept that just because YOU want to do a thing does not mean that everyone else should also want to do it, nor does it make them weird if they don’t. I enjoy stripping wallpaper off when it’s pissing it down outside, does that mean that everyone else must also enjoy that and partake? Of course not. That would be absurd. It’s the same bloody principle. Don’t sit there making someone out to be a weirdo for simply not enjoying the same things as you

sewingismyhobby · 21/04/2019 15:08

It's thick cloud here and about 10 degrees. I did a quick outdoor Easter egg hunt this morning for DS but we're all back indoors now. I'm contemplating putting the heating on soon as it's 17° in this room.Sad

Gardenowl · 21/04/2019 15:17

I have olive skin and black hair, so does ds. Still wont be out between 10/11 and 4/5 depending on how strong the sun is. YANBU

Gardenowl · 21/04/2019 15:18

However, i am very happy being out all day when it is reasonably cool

Kaykay06 · 21/04/2019 15:23

I always feel cold even if it’s really warm, was never a big lover of really hot days as a kid.
Currently watching a film whilst dozing on the couch before my night shift tonight, will be sleeping tomorrow but may see some of the weather once I get up but not overly bothered just like to get my washing dry.
Not a sun worshipper at all.

Lungelady · 21/04/2019 15:24

Where are you sewing?

Raspberry88 · 21/04/2019 15:25

I love being out and about all the time, will happily stay out in the cold and wind and rain and get lots and lots of fresh air but when it's this hot I can't cope with it. A few short walks out and brief spell in the garden is more than enough. I can't 'make the most of it' it it's hot, it makes me feel ill! I'd rather be sitting in with windows and back door open and enjoying looking at it all!

RottnestFerry · 21/04/2019 15:48

I'm must admit that, as far as I'm concerned, it's pleasantly warm at the moment, not remotely hot. It gets hot when the thermometer hits 40.

SecretWitch · 21/04/2019 16:18

I was also very depressed last summer with the extended heat. I am happy to have my coffee in the cool of the morning and then retreat until after 7. Living my best life means staying cool and out of direct sunlight.

GraceMarks · 21/04/2019 16:22

I was just thinking of starting a thread about this, OP. I had one of those mums who would bustle us outside at the first hint of warm weather, with cries of "But you can't sit indoors on such a lovely sunny day!" I've always had freckled, sensitive skin and she was hopeless at putting sun cream on me, so sometimes I'd come back in the afternoon with blisters from sunburn.

Now I'm an adult, I refuse to feel guilty for spending my time as I see fit. My hayfever seems to be getting worse with every passing year, and this weekend I've noticed a new and shitty symptom - my fingers swell up and feel all prickly when I try to bend them. Along with the rashes, the itchy scalp, the clogged sinuses, and the watery eyes, I don't feel like any further justification is required to not "make the most of it", thanks very much.

HexagonalBattenburg · 21/04/2019 16:27

My kids have been in and out today - outside most of the morning and drifted in when the sun got a bit too hot for them, and I've got the french doors open and kitchen doors open so there's a lot of nice airflow through the house but I'm not the outdoor sunshine fun police - I don't like being outside in it myself much when there's no shade around, and our twat neighbour's out in his garden smashing up concrete slabs and playing Spice Girls so it's not exactly peaceful and restful out there.

Kids spent most of last week running around in their grandparents' garden from dawn to dusk - but that's got lots of woodland and shaded areas for hide and seek and den building and adventures and the like... whereas our desperately cramped and overlooked slab of patio with knobhead boy neighbour next door blaring music isn't exactly the same childhood idyll really.

Living my best life means staying cool and out of direct sunlight

I like it very warm but prefer to keep out of direct sunshine.

Lilacspider · 21/04/2019 16:32

Do you all reckon we're headed for a really hot summer like last year then?

RottnestFerry · 21/04/2019 16:46

I do hope so!

Insomnibrat · 21/04/2019 16:57

I have suffered from anxiety and depression for years, I'm not looking for sympathy but the huge pressure of the 'make the most of it-making memories-suntime funtime' brigade really sets me on edge, like I'm not living the life they are. I actively like being indoors and feel huge anxiety not to be when it's a nice day.
It's like a stick to beat people with.

labazsisgoingmad · 21/04/2019 17:40

the heat has made my ankles swell always does it ive had sunstroke twice that is enough to put anyone off sun for life if you have never had it dont underestimate it. my dp loves the heat shirt off padding about in the garden but im lucky he doesnt keep on at me he knows i hate the sun so im quite happy indoors reading on my laptop or doing other jobs while he gets his fix of sunshine

SpeckledDot · 21/04/2019 17:44

You don't have to take it literally you know...

Dana28 · 21/04/2019 17:47

It is not about spending every Waking moment in the sun, but op says Her youngest 2 spent all day yesterday indoors and she was allowing them to sit inside all day watching movies again today.
That's not good.

RottnestFerry · 21/04/2019 18:00

I've had sunstroke twice that is enough to put anyone off sun for life if you have never had it dont underestimate it

I've have it one and agree that it's not something I'd like twice. It hasn't put me off the sun or heat. I'm lucky in that I don't have any medical reason to avoid heat.

We spend a fair bit of time in Australia and people there seem to cope. A lot of them are of British origin too.

MadisonAvenue · 21/04/2019 18:09

I'm not keen on being outside in hot sun either. I come out in a rash, I'm pale skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes and burn easily. I'm susceptible to being bitten by insects and then react badly to the bites (at one point last Summer I had 27 bites on my arms) and I also have hayfever which has blighted every Summer since 1972 and although I've managed to control it well in recent years this week it's been horrendous, the worst it's been for many years.

Yorkiebar71 · 21/04/2019 18:20

I agree with you OP I spent all yesterday outside with DH and all the kids but today I'm on my own and enjoying being inside reading my book (it's a kindle so can't actually see it outside!) I've had a few friends surprised I'm not out but I'm happy inside. Do what makes you happy!
