...I'm out of bleeps. What a fucking cheek, flying five and half thousand miles spewing pollution all over the skies to stop people getting on a bus????

Wonder if she wants a cab to take her to the airport?

Oh yes, she was unbearable, even before this.

But she's ruining her own career by spouting off and generally being a hypocritical lovey. I wouldn't want to pay to see her in any film now.

It's a shame as I like her old stuff, s&s, much ado about nothing, the remains of the day etc. All wonderful films. But anything post love actually... Bleurgh.

We've still got the likes of Judi Dench and Kirstin Scott Thomas though, but ET definitely lost her 'national treasure' status.

Hopefully she'll bugger off to LA or the EU or whatever and not return to our dull grey cake-filled island.

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 19/04/2019 23:05

I think it's great that George Clooney and Elton John fucked off the ruler of Brunei about their despicable sharia laws, stoning women and men - gay/adultery or whatever - to death.

Oh wow, staying at one of the hundreds of other ridiculously luxurious hotels around the world, rather than one of the 9 owned by the Sultan of Brunei.

True heroes Hmm

dangerrabbit · 19/04/2019 23:11

Reminds me of that episode of South Park where the town suffers from an outbreak of smug pollution. The scene with George Clooneys Oscar acceptance speech appearing as a massive dark cloud is probably one of my favourites: m.youtube.com/watch?v=fyTfaCGy6t8

mabelsgarden · 19/04/2019 23:13

She's the classic upper middle class type of do gooder, with a trendy pinch of soft Labour sneering at this country and the little people in it..

Massive virtue signalling at every opportunity , and I remember her comedy series years ago that seemed to end every sketch with something to affront the middle classes ..epater les bourgoisie ?

I've met many people like her over the years who are loud in their condemnation of 'the deplorables ' while protecting their own privilege and status.

All of this.

Personally, I think that bitching about Britain is biting the hand that feeds, which is rude and disrespectful. No country is perfect but she's had a good life here, including access to healthcare and education and been supported in her career.

Educated at Cambridge, no less, when there are countries where girls can't even access a basic level of education. Not to mention her Damehood. Bad manners to accept an honour then complain about the country that's given it to you. Privileged is the word to describe her, I think.

All of this too. Many people have said exactly what I think/wanted to say on here. I quite like ET as an actress, and I know^ she is not a bad person FGS, but she really fucks me right off (along with other over-privileged slebs!) with her eco warrior bullshit, yet getting planes at the drop of a hat...and living her luxurious lifestyle. WTF are these people trying to prove?! She is an embarrassment! And as for slagging off the UK? What the actual fuck? How DARE she? Angry If it's that bad, she can sod off and never come back.

And don't even get me started on the 'well the plane was going that way anyway' argument. That is literally laughable! People will do anything to try and win their (lame) argument won't they?

And I agree wholeheartedly with a pp about the young, and how 'right on' they are, and how they blame the over 50s for everything, yet they would never 'make do and mend' or give up their precious £800 iphones, apple watches, expensive tablets, macbooks, brand new flashy cars, and 3 holidays abroad every year.

And no I DON'T have my own car. I can drive, but 90% of the time, I walk or cycle. Also, recycle everything possible, use the same (canvas) bags over and over for shopping, and use as little water as possible. So there! Grin

I bet the people saying 'bet you all have a car anyway!' have a car themselves PMSL! Eco warriors are usually THAT hypocritical! Wink

JessieMcJessie · 19/04/2019 23:17

So it’s now wrong to go to University because there are women in other countries who have no access to education? What a load of bollocks.

Sarcelle · 19/04/2019 23:17

She has a castle in Scotland as a second home. She can take in plenty of refugees. And presumably that's where she plants the trees to offset her jet setting jaunts.

Can't abide the woman.

jessicawessica · 19/04/2019 23:18

mabelsgarden......I'm not worthy.Star

jessicawessica · 19/04/2019 23:19

No it's not wrong to go to university. But when ET was there there were no student fees of £9,000 pa.

JessieMcJessie · 19/04/2019 23:21

So it’s just wrong to have gone to University in the past? Hmm What are you talking about?

RabbityMcRabbit · 19/04/2019 23:23

But..but...she plants a lot of trees 😂

JessieMcJessie · 19/04/2019 23:32

And don't even get me started on the 'well the plane was going that way anyway' argument. That is literally laughable! People will do anything to try and win their (lame) argument won't they?

MoMabelsgarden please DO start. You can’t just dismiss an argument by saying that it is “laughable” and not elaborate further- THAT is lame. How did Emma Thompson travelling by air to London this week make the climate crisis worse?
You do realise that slagging people off for flying is a facile criticism when so many other things (meat eating, having children) contribute significantly more to global warming than aviation? Maybe you do- are you saying that anyone who has had a child has no right to back this cause?

mabelsgarden · 19/04/2019 23:35

I can't even begin to list the things wrong in your posts Jessie. Goodnight.

KissingInTheRain · 19/04/2019 23:39

I don’t understand why anyone would listen to lectures from actors and pop stars whether these slebs are hypocrites or not.

Farting about on film sets and stages and air kissing at awards ceremonies is hardly a training in climate science, economics or anything else relevant.

Same goes for any cause. What do luvvies and crappy pop warblers know about anything?

(And they are all almost inevitably hypocrites anyway.)

jessicawessica · 19/04/2019 23:42

"How did Emma Thompson travelling by air to London this week make the climate crisis worse?
Really???
So what actions do make it worse? Apart from me driving my diesel car Please enlighten.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/04/2019 23:43

Maybe her spouting hot air made it worse.

Wow, do people hate her per se, or just because she flew here? Im surprised at all the hate. I've always had a soft spot for ET. I think her hearts in the right place.

^ this.

And Emma Thompson is entitled to say whatever the fuck she likes about her own country, which by the way was in context and as a response to Brexiteers promising people the moon on a stick in the immediate aftermath of the referendum. (And we all know how well that’s going.)

What an unpleasant thread.

KissingInTheRain · 20/04/2019 00:12

What an unpleasant thread.

People don’t like being lectured to by trivial thesps.

jessicawessica · 20/04/2019 00:16

Trivial Thesps [snort with laughter]

AlexaAmbidextra · 20/04/2019 01:15

What an unpleasant thread.

Why? Because many of us think that Emma Thompson is a pretentious hypocrite? She isn’t entitled to lecture anybody from her position of vast privilege.

AlexaAmbidextra · 20/04/2019 01:24

I wonder if she’s taken any refugees into one of her large and expensive homes yet?

Have you? No. Thought not.

Well it wasn’t me who was making a lot of noise about how we should have no limits on immigration. It’s all well and good for those with ET’s wealth and privilege telling us what we should do but she and her ilk are shielded from the reality of over-stretched public services. Do you think her child had to go to her fifth choice school because it was over-subscribed or that ET has to wait three weeks to see her GP or 18 months in pain for a hip replacement? Of course not. They can afford to hold their oh so right on beliefs because the consequences don’t touch their rarified lives.

appleandpears · 20/04/2019 01:43

The day the protests started, one of the trending topics was the world’s largest commercial aircraft landing in Scotland. It was ‘welcomed’ on Twitter by many official Scottish outlets and very well covered by the media in general. Applauded for landing safely and gushed over by the media. The story was ahead of any coverage of the protests. Now that is shameful, not Emma Thompson’s travel itinerary. This thread just fuels a Daily Fail opinion piece.

MeRichard · 20/04/2019 01:47

Why didn't she stage a protest at the VIP lounge in Heathrow? On an individual level she could be sure those passing through will have higher carbon footprints. On a policy level they carry more influence than the average passenger on a bus or tube train. On an efficiency level she would use less resource to have a larger impact. On a social justice level she would not be targeting the poor and powerless. On a public relations level she would be sacrificing one of her privileges to further the campaign, cleanly demonstrating commitment.

Just a thought.

araiwa · 20/04/2019 05:18

Her turning up has brought plenty of attention to the protest which more than justifies her flight

I find it laughable that anyone who has children, flies, drives a car, has a pet shouldnt be able to have real concerns and try to do something about the environment without being called a hypocrit

WarmthAndDepth · 20/04/2019 07:09

What strikes me is how some take this perceived lecturing, hypocrisy and smugness so personally. Why? And how are they such awful crimes in the greater context of the climate emergency? They're just mildly annoying, at worst. Surely cynicism, whataboutery and wilful apathy are less helpful? I for one am really grateful that there are people who are prepared to drive this issue with the urgency it deserves.
