MockerstheFeManist · 19/04/2019 17:34

...I'm out of bleeps. What a fucking cheek, flying five and half thousand miles spewing pollution all over the skies to stop people getting on a bus????

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-47987891

Wonder if she wants a cab to take her to the airport?

And I live here too. There’s plenty that’s great about the U.K., and plenty that’s absolutely shit.

Charlottejbt · 19/04/2019 18:56

I like her as an actress and think she probably means well, but she should probably have made a speech by video link to avoid the obvious criticism of flying thousands of miles to attend a climate rally. The same thing has happened to Naomi Klein and probably plenty of other celebs, so they should be wise to that particular pitfall by now.

I think today's grassroots environmentalists are deadly serious and not likely to be fobbed off by token gestures.

Chicksinonebasket · 19/04/2019 18:57

She’s so smug. She’s even smug in love actually when she gets cheated on. She’s just smug all the time.
I had a moan about her to dh earlier today. Also it’s hardly the UK that is worst offender re global warming. Why doesn’t she fuck off to China or something? She’s an idiot.

Singlenotsingle · 19/04/2019 19:07

Hypocrite, just busy polishing her credentials! Any opportunity for a bit of publicity. Flying here indeed to this misery laden, grey old island. I hope she used a scheduled plane, not a private jet?

JacquesHammer · 19/04/2019 19:17

Use their platform to speak up = bloody hypocrites

She could have used her platform to speak up without flying over and using a car - both of which are harmful to the environment she’s allegedly here to protest against damage to...

New movie in the offing?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 19/04/2019 19:22

Did you expect that she should have swam to the UK?

Or she could have, I don't know, stayed where she was and made her point from there rather than needlessly travelling half way across the globe to tell us all off about our carbon footprint.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 19/04/2019 19:34

Personally, I think that bitching about Britain is biting the hand that feeds, which is rude and disrespectful. No country is perfect but she's had a good life here, including access to healthcare and education and been supported in her career - not every country in the world would have afforded her those things. Instead of taking it for granted and sniping, a bit of appreciation wouldn't go amiss.

I think she's one of those people who just opens her mouth and the contents of her brain spill out unhindered. I lost a lot of respect for certain actors including ET with their fawning over Polanski Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet I'm looking at you.
If I was her I'd be keeping very quiet about environmental damage given her particular lifestyle.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/04/2019 19:36

Don’t forget jumping on the anti woman bandwagon too.

RubberTreePlant · 19/04/2019 19:39

Flapjack - she adopted a son, think he was a refugee child from an African country.

TBF, the only jurisdiction in which she 'adopted' him was her own head.

So Flapjack was onto something in the sense that DET has one legal child - a daughter - and has self-identified as the adoptive mother of a young african chap who she didnt, in fact, adopt.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/04/2019 19:44

Want Extinction Rebellion a global protest? Maybe stay in LA and protest about the US government withdrawing from the Paris Treaty, or start up a campaign in one of the most polluting countries in the world (the one she was already in)? Or would that not have gone down so well with her US agent?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/04/2019 19:46

She could’ve Skyped in surely?

donquixotedelamancha · 19/04/2019 19:48

Too bad she didn't know the facts first.

I think this could describe an awful lot of Emma Thompson's opinions. Her letter condemning the (mostly working class) organisations opposing self ID was just dumb. How anyone can imagine that flying 5000 miles especially to stop poor people driving 5 miles to work is anything other than ridiculous is beyond me.

I strongly agree that government should take more action against climate change, but I don't see how a bunch of posh twats making it hard for people to get to work helps.

One of the trust fund yahoos organising it was interviewed and he genuinely compared himself to Mandela and Gandhi.

MockerstheFeManist · 19/04/2019 19:49

Eighth largest island in the world, half of it very dry, all of it remarkably green given its population density. And not about to disappear at any moment down an earthquake hole.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/04/2019 19:49

That was funny though. We were hooting about that at casa Fekko.

Bookridden · 19/04/2019 19:49

I'm a fan of her acting, but agree that her actions here are hypocritical. However, the message the protesters are delivering is something we ignore at our peril, much as I don't like their actions. Those of us who eat meat and fly are fucking up the environment, however we try to justify it or deflect Sad

teacherspet · 19/04/2019 19:50

Her and her woe is me hand wringing lovey husband. They honestly think that we are so stupid that we will be preached to when our carbon footprint, in most cases, will never be anywhere near theirs.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 19/04/2019 19:55

I don't feel remotely guilty about the very rare flights I have taken. It's the perfect like ET who fly long haul several times a year who need to stop doing it, not those of us who go on the occasional holiday.

Caucho · 19/04/2019 19:56

YABU. She planted a tree.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/04/2019 19:56

Where? Just the one?

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 19/04/2019 19:57

This really pissed me off today. What a fucking hypocrite! And then them going at protesting at Heathrow today.

See also Leonardo Di Caprio using his Oscar sppech to lecture us all about climate change when he must have one of the largest carbon footprints of anyone in the planet!

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 19/04/2019 19:59

I can't stand her, so completely full of herself always has been and her mother has the same superior vibe. I don't rate her as an actress either but wasn't her oscar for best screenplay, Sense and Sensibility?

RosaWaiting · 19/04/2019 20:00

Bookridden "Those of us who eat meat and fly are fucking up the environment, however we try to justify it or deflect"

I don't eat meat or use flights. I don't see myself as some kind of environmentalist and I'm sure many people who do eat meat and/or use flights are offsetting in many other ways. I don't think it helps anyone to be all sanctimonious about this.

agree with a pp who lost respect for Emma when she spouted off about trans issues. I met her in a charity context and genuinely thought she meant well, but now realise she's probably deluded. There was a bunch of other stuff too, all mentioned here.

however, for me, this protest has been completely undermined by the sheer stupidity of disrupting public transport, and cyclists, in London.

couple of people in my block of flats are talking about hiring cars to get where they are going this weekend - because nobody wants to attempt the Tube and find someone has glued themselves to it. They'd be better off getting a hire car and if the protesters block the traffic - use the air con. Better than bus or Tube.

fucking muppets. Emma hasn't helped this either.

IsoscelesSandwich · 19/04/2019 20:02

But the protests aren’t about the actions of individuals, they’re about the inaction of our government. Yes, we all need to take personal responsibility. Would you be more likely to buy an electric car if it were cheaper than petrol/diesel? Probably. Would you use the train more if it was cheaper than driving? Probably. Would you fly with an airline that didn’t use dirty energy over a polluting one? Probably. These are all things the government can change, but hasn’t. We need legislation to clean energy cheaper than dirty energy. Until that happens, our individual actions are unlikely to stop the climate warming past the devastating 2 degrees that’s on course to happen if we carry on as we are. Get pissed off about that. Not Emma Thompson.

Caucho · 19/04/2019 20:02

Di Caprio flew over from the US to Europe on a private jet to pick up his environmental campaigning award. Had no alternative because of his schedule I recall
