What do you call the thing you use to change TV channels?

I've just watched Tenable and the thing I thought it was called didn't make the top ten of names.

I'm honestly, genuinely shocked. I thought it was really common and would be the most obvious answer.

The remote or the thing, although I have several, so sometimes I'll specify "the grey remote" or "the YouView thing".

stressed yes I remember the cable attached remote. Kind of recollect it being called ‘the controls’ or possibly ‘the box’ but that would have been confusing when the telly was ‘the box’.

'Doofer' seems fairly common but I no longer remember why or when we added the 'splurge.'

Or occasionally the 'splonge.'

For years growing up we never had one so as the then youngest, for my siblings the remote was me!
Other than "remote" it's the doofer in this house too
