I'm just shocked, I can't believe it. I have a picture of DH and myself on bicycles in front of it on a canvas in our bedroom, one of our favourite trips, I just can't believe it went up in flames!!! Sad

So awful isn’t it Sad

MrsCatE · 15/04/2019 20:33

Holy shit! Can't believe this! It's going to burn to the ground.

Wtf? After almost 1000 years, 2 world wars,; destroyed by renovation work a la York?

LDNmumof3 · 15/04/2019 20:36

Genuinely so upset about this. Poor Paris Sad

VioletCharlotte · 15/04/2019 20:36

This is heartbreaking. I can't quite believe it's happening 😢

DrVonPatak · 15/04/2019 20:37

I'm actually feeling like crying. All that art, gone up in a smoke...

It's devastating...I can't believe it. We went last year and my biggest regret right now is that we didn't go inside.

RossPoldarksWife · 15/04/2019 20:43

Went when I was a child, it was amazing even to an11yr old. The windows were awesome.

Absolutely devastated it’s on fire, beautiful place.
I’ve actually sat and cried.

Chartreuse45 · 15/04/2019 20:44

It seems they were able to rescue all the art treasures - according to The Independent. I am surprised but delighted. It does seem like the stained glass windows (parts of which are medieval in origin) are safe as well as all photos/videos don't seem to show any damage. Hope this is true.

covetingthepreciousthings · 15/04/2019 20:47

Absolutely heartbreaking to see the devastation from the videos of it burning.

I think they're saying it might be an accidental fire from the restoration works - can you imagine if you'd been responsible for this kind of mistake at work? Shock

Lifeover · 15/04/2019 21:00

Awful! So much history gone. Terrible at any time but so devastating for Christians at Easter

QueenDoria · 15/04/2019 21:02

The image of the collapsing spite is heartbreaking ...

QueenDoria · 15/04/2019 21:02

Spire.

isseywithcats · 15/04/2019 21:08

so sad that such an iconic building like this is now lost we went up the tower and inside when we went to Paris, an amazing building

Chartreuse45 · 15/04/2019 21:08

It seems now that there is artwork at the rear that needs to be saved. Maybe it is attached whereas the other was portable. There is a great possibility that the cathedral will not survive. The next 90 minutes are crucial. Such a sad day for humanity.

Greeborising · 15/04/2019 21:14

It’s truly awful.
As pp said it’s been standing since the 12 c
Heart breaking

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 15/04/2019 21:53

What about the crown of thorns and fragment of the true cross? They’re priceless relics to lose.

HopefulAgain10 · 15/04/2019 21:55

I might have missed how the fire started?

Dishwashersaurous · 15/04/2019 21:56

End of days stuff

TheInvestigator · 15/04/2019 22:00

@AllTheWhoresOfMalta

The crown of thorns was reported as being saved. Can't remember which news outlet tweeted it though.

The stained glass windows have exploded and the fire crews have said they might not be able to save the out walls or the towers.

Stressedout10 · 15/04/2019 22:01

Guy on the BBC just said that the external structure is saved but it's still burning so who knows so sad

TheInvestigator · 15/04/2019 22:02

Oh!! Six minutes ago they announced that the structure has been saved from total destruction so it should remain standing... which means they can rebuild I guess. And they've saved a lot.

Zebedee88 · 15/04/2019 22:06

It's so sad, we were there literally 2 days ago, such a beautiful building x

TheoriginalLEM · 15/04/2019 22:08

It wont ever be the same. We sat outside about15 years ago. Wish we went in.

So sad.

Taking comfort that no loss of life - perspective

Absofuckinglutely · 15/04/2019 22:12

I feel quite tearful about it and just sick that the whole building could be lost. All the irreplaceable artefacts and artworks, the stained glass windows, urgh it's too awful. Gutted.

TheInvestigator · 15/04/2019 22:14

A fireman has been seriously injured. And the fire chief is now saying that the structure being safe isn't certain. So many conflicting and unconfirmed reports... it will be hours before we get one full, confirmed story.
