Why anti Semitic?

I don’t get the under currents of this anti semitism stuff.

Can someone please explain?

It's complex.

There are people that dislike those who practice the Jewish faith. They're generally right wing extremists who also have issues with Muslims, multiculturalism etc. That's antisemitic.

There are people that subscribe to conspiracy theories and deny that the Holocaust happened, or try to justify the actions of Nazis. That's antisemitic.

Where it gets complicated is issues around Israel and Palestine. The Israeli government has an apartheid regime against the Palestinian people, and some Jewish people (certainly not all) try to defend their abhorrent behaviour. They try to shut down debate by calling legitimate criticism antisemitism. That's mostly where the contention lies.

NoBaggyPants · 14/04/2019 20:21

In my circle, the strongest critics of the Israeli government are Jewish. And they get called antisemitic because of their views. That's where it gets really confusing!

Lifecraft · 14/04/2019 20:43

It's true that many supporters of Israel and it's policies claim that criticism of it is anti-Semitic in order to try and shut down legitimate debate.

But it's also true that many critics of Israel conflagrate the two, and will often say stuff like "the Jews have launched another attack on the Palestinians" which is anti-Semitic. It's not the Jews, it's the Israeli army, most of who are Jews but not all. Under orders from the Israeli govt, which was elected by a vote of Israeli citizens, not all of whom are Jewish.

So why is Corbyn anti Semitic?

So is it the money lending thing (dating from way back) that is at the root of original anti semetism?

I always assumed it was but never dared ask.

Julietee · 14/04/2019 21:03

There’s no ‘the rest of you are doomed’ in judaism, havingto.
And the Romans crucified Jesus.

Julietee · 14/04/2019 21:05

If anyone wants to understand European antisemitism thoroughly, I highly recommend the book ‘The Devil and the Jews’.

Thank you for the above explanations. I'd like to ask - what does the term 'Zionist' mean? I have always found this confusing.

ForalltheSaints · 14/04/2019 21:07

The Labour Party does not treat anti-semitic remarks by its members seriously and quickly enough. Indeed, UKIP will act quicker.

bookworm14 · 14/04/2019 21:08

This might help.

Why anti Semitic?
Merename · 14/04/2019 21:09

Corbyn isn’t anti Semitic, OP. He is critical of the Israeli government’s actions towards Palestinians. The media and powerful figures hate Corbyn and have pushed this narrative but he is the most anti-oppression politician out there. That’s not to say there isn’t antisemitism in the Labour Party and that it could be dealt with better.

ThePlaceToVent · 14/04/2019 21:13

Thank you all 🙏

I thought Zionists were/are the movement that campaigned or whatever the right phras is for a Jewish homeland until Israel was founded. There's probably more to it than that though.

  • be Isreal I mean the modern state of Isreal

Yeah - (Wikipedia).
Zionism (Hebrew: צִיּוֹנוּת Tsiyyonut [t͡sijo̞ˈnut] after Zion) is the nationalist movement of the Jewish people that supports the re-establishment of a Jewish homeland in the territory defined as the historic Land of Israel (roughly corresponding to Canaan, the Holy Land, or the region of Palestine

Whatsername7 · 14/04/2019 21:22

I ask because Mayim Bialik (Blossom if you are old like me, or Amy from The big bang theory if you are young) identified herself as a zionist a while back. I wondered if being a zionist was the Jewish equivalent of Catholicism being one form of Christianity. I don't know any Jewish people irl to ask.

Moralitym1n1 · 14/04/2019 21:22

The Romans crucified Christ. Going by religious texts, Christ himself was raised as Jewish.

I think some members of the Jewish hierarchy were (supposedly) involved in his arrest/prosecution/execution, weren't they? I don't know if it's in the new testament or in any other text (or if there's any evidence of it).

I think he was supposed to be considered an irritant, well more like - threat, by them. What he preached was often anti establishment/hierarchy.

Moralitym1n1 · 14/04/2019 21:25

I don't get the impression that it's a sect of Judaism, just a movement in favour of a Jewish homeland being restored in its (roughly) original location. Could be wrong though.

I always liked that actress (who's also a scientist but she's got a bit whacky recently ).

Whatsername7 · 14/04/2019 21:32

I like her too, she is a brilliant actress. But, Ibsometimes found her forceful tweeting about parenting a bit judgy. Particularly when she tweeted lots of anti formula/pro breastfeeding stuff at the same time as I had been diagnosed with lactation failure with dd1. That was my issue though. She is very evangelical about bf and I knew that, but tortured myself by reading it anyway!

Teddybear45 · 14/04/2019 21:34

I am anti-Israel but pro-Semetic. However there are people who believe you can’t be both. That if you are anti-Israel you are anti-Semetic by default.

Moralitym1n1 · 14/04/2019 21:59

@Whatsername7

Yeah that's partly why I thought she'd gone a bit whacky - she was breast feeding til her kid/s were quite old (I know it's a controversial subject) and also 'came out' as polygamous. She seemed to feel the need to be quite vocal about things, which i suppose is admirable bin one way but I another it's like - tmi, love, you seem a bit over zealous.

I forgot she wax also blossom until you mentioned it.
