I feel there is a lot of agenda here and whilst I can play along with the mods, sometimes I wonder what that agenda is?

OP posts:
wanderings · 14/04/2019 21:29

I think there is a certain "general MN consensus" about many things: not enforced by mods, but by the users. There are certain threads which always end up going the same way, you can predict them before even opening them. Some of them are:

  • Tradesmen using your loo.
  • Shoes off in the house.
  • Being caught speeding.
  • Christian people, or teaching children about the Bible or Christianity. On these threads, have the bingo card ready for "imaginary friend", "indoctrinate", "presented as fact", "sky fairy".
  • Cyclists.
  • Smacking.
  • Irresponsible dog owners.
  • Irresponsible cat owners.
birdsdestiny · 14/04/2019 21:32

I am not sure people understand how MN works. If the owners decided to ban all discussion of crisps they could. If they decided to ban all users who used the word moist they could. Now whether that would be a good business model is another thing but they can do it.

Add obesity to that, wanderings Wink

Also threads about Santa and Elf on the Shelf all tend to go the same way.

Having said that, there have been a few discussions about Easter that I haven't seen before. Easter Wink

MitziTheTabbyIsMyOverlord · 14/04/2019 21:48

I would add to @wanderings' list with
Peodophiles
Giving alcohol to teens or allowing them to have it
Infidelity

I'm really not necessarily pro any of those things, but posters often see things in a very black-and-White terms, and reality is often shades of grey, nuanced and there are often too sides to every story.

A hypothetical example.... If a woman posted her DH was controlling, she'd be advised to leave him. He might be controlling. But she may also be incredibly indecisive and lacking in confidence.

IntoValhalla · 14/04/2019 21:49

Well that was dramatic for a Sunday evening Hmm
My two pence worth: the only 2 subjects I’ve come across that are more or less off limits are any criticism of the Mcanns (probably fear of legal ramifications when the tone turns accusatory) and criticism of Gina Ford (previous petty legal action against MN) Hmm
Other than that, I’ve seen lots of the subjects on the OP’s list discussed, and discussed within the talk guidelines.....but there’s always the odd cunt who pops up. That’s inevitable.

MitziTheTabbyIsMyOverlord · 14/04/2019 21:52

Two Blush

Absolutepowercorrupts · 14/04/2019 21:57

If you want to discuss accuse parents of murder, then go find a forum that is ok with that.
Same with Meghan Markle if you want to be racist critical go find a forum that supports that view
Mumsnet is not a tiny English forum, it's huge and spread over many countries

Fairenuff · 14/04/2019 21:59

I think posters are confusing mn moderation with posters on threads with different opinions.

Sparklingbrook · 14/04/2019 22:00

Discussing the McCanns over and over saying the same things isn't going to change anything or suddenly solve the case. Pointless.

polarpig · 14/04/2019 22:05

@hebemumsnet please tell me you ended the ban message with 'bye hun'

Pom bears are great as a canape, just pop them on a stick with a bit of pineapple and you'll be the talk of the town.

wanderings · 14/04/2019 22:10

@Fairenuff If it's me you're referring to (only one thing worse than being talked about! Wink), I know what I said is not the same as the OP. But some opinions on MN are so deeply entrenched, that anyone who dares post otherwise is soon roasted to death.

Fairenuff · 14/04/2019 22:16

No I wasn't talking about anyone in particular but just saying that mn is made up of loads of people so if the thread seems to be going against you, it's just popular opinion not mn moderators.

NewAndImprovedNorks · 14/04/2019 22:38

Brilliant hebemumsnet

SrSteveOskowski · 14/04/2019 22:52

I didn't know I wasn't allowed to discuss being Irish. Obviously neither did the many many people who helped my 'Irish thread' to run to 23 pages Confused

LellyMcKelly · 14/04/2019 22:55

And yet here we all are, discussing them all. Thanks TrollAndIWon. Things off limit presumably include where there’s an active court case or investigation ongoing, or when you’re saying something that could become the subject of a court case (libel or similar). Mumsnet, and other media, rightly want to protect themselves and their users. Other than that, you can say what you want, but you cannot control how other people respond. So if you, for example, think that feeding your kids sweets for breakfast, lunch and dinner is a great idea, and want to tell everyone about it, you can. However, you can’t expect everyone to agree with you, or think that you have amazing parenting skills. And they’ll tell you. Mumsnet is full of amazing, funny, feisty, smart women and men, and if you can’t handle them disagreeing with you then perhaps it’s not the place for you. People come on here to get a range of views and insight, and that’s where its value lies.

TwitterQueen1 · 14/04/2019 23:01

The ethnicity of your grandfather doesn't mean you can't be a racist wwydoo. I'm absolutely not saying you are of course - I don't know you from Adam or Eve, but a Pakistani heritage doesn't give you an automatic get out of jail free card.

standardaccount · 14/04/2019 23:02

Yeah mumsnet is fucking awful. Along with the idiots that report your post if they don't agree with your opinion. Everyone gets far too offended on here.

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2019 23:14

@wwydoo
Problem is lots of posters say racist stuff then claim to black or have mixed race kids etc when called on it. It’s usually the only time they’ve mentioned it and there’s no way to prove it.

BuzzPeakWankBobbly · 14/04/2019 23:26

Totally skim read that list, conflated IRA and RUC and then wondered why OP was saying the RAC were off limits...

JaneJeffer · 14/04/2019 23:30

I think you need to be Irish to discuss being Irish. Are you?

Amongstthetallgrass · 14/04/2019 23:35

Ah look! My post about the Mcanns got deleted... go figure.

VladmirsPoutine · 14/04/2019 23:35

So OP's a PBP but that aside, I do feel that quite a few people share the OP's sentiment. I wonder if it's more the OP would rather the greenlight to use all manner of offensive and corrosive language but as that's obviously not permitted by the site nor by anyone with a modicum of decency it leaves the OP and her ilk feeling aggrieved at the perception of there being a PC-brigadge approach to the mods.
