About a different meal to the one that's been slaved over?

Person A thinks that's what's been served for dinner (2 adults, 2 DC under 7) is what we're eating. End of. If you don't like it, you don't eat it, that's your choice. It's delicious and not "out there" or very unusual.

Person B thinks if you've never had it before, try it a little and then say you don't like it, it's ok for you to be made an alternative just for you, so you don't go hungry.

Who is BU?

For further info it's one of the DC refusing the food.

It's squash risotto with sage and pine nuts so quite "adult" depending on your perspective / diet.

And the replacement alternative was a ham and cheese wrap, no cooking involved.

It is exotic if you have not been brought up eating it. If you are meat potatoes and veg( carrots, cabbage, runner beans) for a significant part of life then lots of things are exotic. Certainly herbs and spices were never used unless in pickled red cabbage.

Just watched the Russell Kane link with my DD - both found it hilarious (though kinda had to gloss over the swearing Shock)... esp as she's currently struggling to eat her homemade pumpkin seed bread Just eat the goddamn seeds already! Hmm .....guess that makes me person A! Wink

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 12:05

“It's not just rice, veg & possibly cheese though is it. It's got strong herbs in it that doesn't go with the veg and its boiled into a rank consistency.“
Sage and butternut squash is a classic combination. As classic as sage and onion or mint and lamb. And it’s only strong if you put a lot in!

MariaNovella · 15/04/2019 12:06

Squash risotto with sage and pine nuts sounds revolting.

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 12:08

And I would be very surprised if the squash was boiled.....

MariaNovella · 15/04/2019 12:09

Pumpkin is used a lot in Italian cooking - pumpkin filled ravioli are very mainstream - but tbh the sweetness of pumpkin in a savoury dish is not for everyone. A bit like red currant jelly with roast lamb - other cultures find this really disgusting.

LaurieMarlow · 15/04/2019 12:10

Words like disgusting and revolting being thrown around about perfectly acceptable food/combinations is beyond childish.

MariaNovella · 15/04/2019 12:13

It’s not childish. A lot of food is pretty gross, especially when recipes are culturally appropriated by people who haven’t got a clue about what they should taste like or even the methods to be used to get an acceptable result.

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/04/2019 12:14

Acceptable to you, not everyone. Clearly some people do find it disgusting.

Damntheman · 15/04/2019 12:14

I suspect people who talk that way about food, Laurie, are people who had B type parents ;)

LaurieMarlow · 15/04/2019 12:16

I’m even more depressed by a food thread on here than ever. Confused

MariaNovella · 15/04/2019 12:16

The only sort of acceptable parenting is B type. Making DC eat food they hate is abuse.

LaurieMarlow · 15/04/2019 12:17

I expect you’re right damn. Terrible reflection of food culture in this country.

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 12:17

I don’t like mackerel or bananas.. I am aware that others do, I find it perfectly possible to express my dislike without saying that they are gross, rank or disgusting. Because I’m a grown up.

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 15/04/2019 12:17

What BS. You can use the same approach with three different children and get three very different results. That's exactly what happened with a friend who weaned and fed each of them in the same way and has a very fussy eater, a kid who eats almost anything and an average eater. People love to think that it's black and white and that their child's 'good' eating is down to their wonderful parenting but it isn't nearly so clear cut.

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 15/04/2019 12:19

That's how I feel about pumpkin, MariaNovella. I like sweet potato, squash, pumpkin and parsnips on their own or in soup, but I find that the sweetness overpowers everything when combined with other foods.

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 15/04/2019 12:19

Perhaps you just haven't had the right mackerel or bananas, Bertrand.

BertrandRussell · 15/04/2019 12:21

Possibly. But I do try both whenever I come across them in a new form on someone else’s plate!

Purplejay · 15/04/2019 12:22

I am with B. A is BU.

I never made DS eat dinner or go without. Easy to make a wrap, cereal, toast. How would you like being made to eat something you don’t like!

Also surely not much slaving is involved. Risotto can be time consuming but not a lot of effort really.

MariaNovella · 15/04/2019 12:23

Most bananas on sale these days are pretty horrible. A proper banana, as opposed to one grown as cheaply as possible for mass international trade, is a wondrous thing. Mackerel are dirty feeders and are best avoided unless fished in very clean waters.

Damntheman · 15/04/2019 12:23

I've yet to find mackerel prepared in a way that I enjoy. But then, it took me 27 years to find salmon prepared in a fashion I liked the taste of and now I eat salmon regularly! So there's always hope :)

Purplejay · 15/04/2019 12:23

To add DS eats almost anything.

MariaNovella · 15/04/2019 12:24

But I do try both whenever I come across them in a new form on someone else’s plate!

A new recipe can’t overcome the serious limitations of the raw ingredient.

AryaStarkWolf · 15/04/2019 12:25

It depends really, if it's an ongoing thing then I'd probably be with person A but if it's only every now and again then person B

Thewitcher · 15/04/2019 12:25

"IMO fussy eating is nurture not nature. You are building a rod for your own back by offering choice."

My sister would eat anything and everything. I however would refuse to take a bite of anything new, resulting in me sitting at the table for up to an hour as my mum wouldn't let me leave, going hungry, and having food issues into adulthood.
