To ask who are the modern day funny female comedian?

My brother visited today and whilst flicking through my Netflix noticed that I had Joan Rivers on my to watch list. This led to a discussion on the lack of modern high profile/good female comedians about today. He basically said they were few and far between. I could only think of Jo Brand at the time but there must be more?? I was pissed off after he visited and wanted to forward some links of funny females but I can’t find many.....

Suzi ruffell

TooManyPaws · 14/04/2019 17:59

Janey Godley.

Can't stand Katherine Ryan, unfunny and frozen.

DeadWife · 14/04/2019 18:07

Amy Schumer stand up, was lucky enough to see her live.

buttermilkwaffles · 14/04/2019 18:11

Hannah Gadsby, Jen Brister, Sarah Keyworth...

CatWhisker · 14/04/2019 18:20

I love Diane Morgan's Philomena Cunk character

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 14/04/2019 18:24

So glad to see Kiri Pritchard McLean mentioned, she’s so funny.
I’m going to see her show Victim Complex soon.

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 14/04/2019 18:31

Also Jayde Adams is very funny.

I think there are fewer high profile female comedians because historically live comedy, the starting point for nearly all comedy that makes it onto TV, has not been a female friendly environment. While things today aren’t perfect, it is changing and you’re seeing far more women trying comedy for the first time than ever before. This is already filtering through into live comedy - in the last six years the Edinburgh comedy award has been won three times by a woman and of last year’s six nominated newcomers, five were women. This then feeds through into TV/film/Netflix, so that in a few years there should be a greater number of women on screen.

As for your question, who is good: in the last year I’ve seen live shows by loads of women who are great: Kiri Pritchard McLean, Rosie Jones, Suzi Ruffell, Lou Sanders, Lazy Susan, Nina Conti, Sara Barron, Sarah Keyworth, Rose Matafeo, Rachel Parris, Jen Brister, Lauren Pattison, Felicity Ward, Bec Hill, Lolly Adefope and Olga Koch.

My current

Cautionsharpblade · 14/04/2019 18:40

I agree that Philomena Cunk is very funny, but it’s written by two men...

Julietee · 14/04/2019 18:46

Maria Bamford is a genius.

Rezie · 14/04/2019 18:47

I dont find all of these funny but I would consider them to be high profile. Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Michelle Wolf, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Chelsea Handler, Ellen DeGeneres, Bridget Everett, Ali Wong

meow1989 · 14/04/2019 18:48

In particular;

Josie Long is very funny and consistently good live.
Hannah Gadsby's Netflix show is excellent.
Sarah Pascoe was good live.
Katherine Ryan

Cant say I've come across many "rank vag jokes" Hmm

hiptobeasquare · 14/04/2019 18:50

I like Sophie Hagen.

megletthesecond · 14/04/2019 18:52

Sindhu Vee.
Janey Godley.

Eemamc · 14/04/2019 18:52

My current favourites are:
Katherine Ryan
Ellie Taylor
Aisling Bea
Lucy Porter
Rachel Parris
Cariad Lloyd
Mae Martin and
Sara Pascoe (whose book Animal is also bloody brilliant too)
I also saw Maisie Adam at the Edinburgh Fringe last summer and she was really good too.

Neckercheiftheif · 14/04/2019 18:53

Fern Brady is hilarious!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/04/2019 18:59

@LettuceLeave - Victoria Wood is the single biggest loss to comedy in years, in my opinion. I still mourn the fact that her death means there will never be another dinnerladies.

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/04/2019 19:19

Lynne Trusse's Life at Absolute Zero (BBC sounds) mentions Victoria Wood and I was so sad when I heard her name. She is irreplaceable.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/04/2019 19:33

I'd echo Susan Calman, Zoe Lyons, Holly Walsh, Ellie Taylor and especially Rachel Parris. Nish Kumar is ostensibly in charge on The Mash Report, but his bits are invariably very weak, whilst Rachel's observations and delivery are razor-sharp. She definitely has the upper hand in their banter and I don't think he's necessarily intended to act as her stooge.

I don't think anybody has mentioned Andi Osho yet. She's brilliant - and does a great impression of Tony Blair, of all people!

People like Ronni Ancona, Debra Stephenson, Jan Ravens and Jess Robinson tend to be compartmentalised as impressionists, because they're obviously so good at it, but they're also very funny when just being themselves. I cannot see Davina McCall on TV without being convinced that it's actually Debra as Davina!

BertrandRussell · 14/04/2019 19:36

Nish Kumar says that working with Rachel on the Mash Report feels like being on the other side of the net to Serena Williams......

Acis · 14/04/2019 19:55

Agree with many of those already named - it's really striking how many women comedians have been coming to the fore lately. I'd add Rebecca Front, and amongst the up-and-comings Helen Bauer.

tentative3 · 14/04/2019 19:55

I liked Nina Conti's older stuff, I'm a bit less keen on her most recent tour, I liked the first one I saw with just her and monkey.

I saw Sarah Millican last year and agree with the poster that said it was a bit meh. I wasn't keen on Lucy Porter. I like Katherine Ryan though.

Bonkerz · 14/04/2019 19:56

Luisa omilan is fab
