My brother visited today and whilst flicking through my Netflix noticed that I had Joan Rivers on my to watch list. This led to a discussion on the lack of modern high profile/good female comedians about today. He basically said they were few and far between. I could only think of Jo Brand at the time but there must be more?? I was pissed off after he visited and wanted to forward some links of funny females but I can’t find many.....

Bridget Christie.
Angela Barnes is hilarious.

wafflyversatile · 14/04/2019 16:53

Mel Giedroyc
Sue Perkins

Cherylshaw · 14/04/2019 16:53

I always struggle with alot of female comedians as i find they always go for the rank vag jokes there are a few i find funny but that always puts me off

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 14/04/2019 16:54

Kiri Pritchard McLean and Rachel Fairbourne are brilliant. Not mainstream but their podcast All Killa No Filla is fantastic. I actually prefer their anecdotes more than the crime stuff Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/04/2019 16:55

Sharia Mitzi
Catherine Tate
Diane Morgan

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/04/2019 16:56

Shazia Mirza (tut, flipping autocorrect)

When I worked in the industry I rapidly came to the conclusion that people who said they didn't find women funny... tended to say more about them than it did female comics.

VictoriaBun · 14/04/2019 16:57

Saw Sarah Millican last year and tbh her show was meh. She might have been pissed off because someone at the front took a photo of her and she gave them a good mouthful, but I didn't particularly find her that great.

RuffleCrow · 14/04/2019 17:02

Honestly, not many mainstream stand up comedians of either sex make me laugh.

Women who do make me laugh are Lauren Graham, Tina Fey, Kate McKinnon, Phoebe Waller Bridge and if i'm a silly mood with my feminist radar turned off, Miranda Hart. Most of those aren't 'proper' comedians I suppose.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/04/2019 17:02

Stand up or actors? Anyway, including as they’re comic writers as well as actors/stand ups
Joanna Scanlon
Vicki Pepperdine
Julia Davis
Holly Walsh

Any who have an act that isn’t the tired old tampon/fat/lazy husband routine on the one hand or lame some politics on the other. Oh and some originality (google the YouTube clip “Amy Schumer steals jokes”)

RuffleCrow · 14/04/2019 17:07

Oh gosh, forgot Mel and Sue! Sue, particularly just seems naturally witty in such a warm way. I luvs her.

RuffleCrow · 14/04/2019 17:09

And yy to Diane Morgan. Keep forgetting people

Cherylshaw · 14/04/2019 17:14

Diane Morgan is hilarious

sauvignonblancplz · 14/04/2019 17:32

Ali Wong, Amy Schumer, Katherine Ryan

RockysMa · 14/04/2019 17:39

Philomena Cunk is ace

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 14/04/2019 17:41

So glad only 2 mentions for Mel and Sue, but none would have been better, they are just so lame.

Sweetpea55 · 14/04/2019 17:43

Sarah Millican gets on my nerves with that whiney high pitched voice.
Miranda Hart--brilliant

AHintOfStyle · 14/04/2019 17:47

Katherine Ryan, Aisling Bea, Susan Calman

There’s loads more!

Liverbird77 · 14/04/2019 17:47

Susie Essman is hilarious

ScruffyBlankey · 14/04/2019 17:48

Another vote for Deborah Frances-White. Hilarious.

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 14/04/2019 17:49

I really like Roisin Conaty - she seems quite effortlessly funny whereas some other female comedians seem to be a bit too try hard and also over do it on the 'feminist comedy' as well.

I also quite like Ellie Taylor, she probably falls into the 'try hard' category but what I have seen is quite funny.

Katherine Ryan is quite funny as well.

KetchupOnRoastDinner · 14/04/2019 17:51

Going to add Tiffany Stevenson, Rosie Jones & Felicity Ward to this list, great stand ups.

Podcasts for female comedy rather than TV, which is still stuck in its’ outdated ‘no more than one woman + one BAME’ formula when it comes to panel shows.

Connieston · 14/04/2019 17:53

Kerry Godliman, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Amy Schumer come to mind. Also Diane Morgan aka Philomena Kunk.

MyNameIsJane · 14/04/2019 17:56

All of the above
