help settle a debate - Alpha male misogynist type men

to ask you help settle an argument.

If you know any Alpha male misogynist type men (misogynist maybe unfair but using it for short hand) - very self confident men who tend to be high achievers, high earners and take no prisoners, what hobbies the ones you know do and where would you find them socially?

I have a theory that there is something that almost all these men do without exception... my friend disagrees. I don't want to skew my (highly scientific!) survey in advance...

So... in MN's opinion, cycling and camping - both nice quiet activities, enjoyed ime by nice quiet introverted people - are for alpha male misogynist types?

I'll ask my dh if I've let him say anything misogynist lately. I must check on all those nice people on the continent where cycling is so popular too. Britain seems to have it in for quiet types at the moment.

I would have said football and rugby myself.

Leatherflamingle · 14/04/2019 20:27

No i think it’s like one of those weird questions reserved for 11+ entrants or potential civil service employees.
‘All alpha males like cycling
Does this mean all cyclists are alpha males?’
Grin

Leatherflamingle · 14/04/2019 20:29

Obviously the mumsnet definition of alpha male varies greatly.
The original question was re alpha male misogynistic type.
So more Grant Mitchell than Mick shipman, in my mind.

HolyForkingShirt · 14/04/2019 20:32

It's not really surprising that triathlons could attract over-achieving family-shirking alpha people. It takes hours and hours of training and the only point of it is to compete, break some "personal record" and push your body to the limit.

The only person I know who does triathlons/IronMans is a woman and she is a very high achieving Alpha, works long hours in banking, etc.

My DP is very "beta" in real life but plays rugby, something about channeling his energy and being part of a team (I don't get it because I hate all sports lol). The guys I know who do low-league team sports are all pretty nice non-misogynist guys. I've heard in the higher up leagues there's lots of cheaters and drugs.

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 14/04/2019 22:04

Leather Grin.

I've heard that in the higher up leagues of everything there's lots of cheaters and drugs. Something to do with high adrenaline lifestyle.

Sailing & Cycling

Stompythedinosaur · 15/04/2019 01:02

I would have gone for cycling as well!

@Leatherflamingle yes majestic man is an odd old mixture! He wangs on about his barbecue preferences but on the other hand he's really helpful, loves to solve your problems, and is off the scale hot to boot.

On balance, I'll let him stay :)

user1457017537 · 15/04/2019 08:19

Nope it’s horseracing and boxing. They are not normally team players.

LaurieMarlow · 15/04/2019 08:22

I was going to say triathlons and other ‘endurance’ events.

Is there a right answer btw?

Vulpine · 15/04/2019 08:24

Cycling Is not necessarily a 'nice quiet activity' - it's about getting a flashy expensive bike, some garish ball-hugging lycra, cycling faster stronger harder than the next man to beat your personal best. It's all about the testosterone.

zoomies1 · 15/04/2019 08:28

Running, cycling, swimming, triathlons, iron-man, marathons

Justgivemesomepeace · 15/04/2019 08:30

Cycling, motorbikes and formula 1, pub.

zoomies1 · 15/04/2019 08:34

@iceinthecider agree with your comment re partners. I'm expected to stay fit and work out pretty much every day. Which is fine as I enjoy it but when I broke my leg / got pregnant and was really sick all the time, he clearly struggled with the weight gain. He is also embarrassed by how slowly I run.....

PlatypusLeague · 15/04/2019 08:38

Sailing, classical music, posh food/wine, cricket. But I also know some delightful people who like some/all of these things.

Mominatrix · 15/04/2019 08:50

Can we please stop with the lazy and, frankly, wrong stereotype that high achiever = misogynist?

justarandomtricycle · 15/04/2019 09:06

Alpha males cycling? Erm, maybe, but going to the gym a lot, which is often a compensating behaviour? What?

Aren't we confusing the set of psychological characteristics that is the alpha male with the appearance of a fine physical specimen there?

I'd say alpha males tend to be right wing, tend to smoke, or anything else that gives the middle finger to people who know what's best for them, tend to be naturally physically strong as opposed to spending years of their life trying to become that. Sports I would say rugby, when they're older golf, but it doesn't have to be sports, anything competitive will do.

InternetArgument · 15/04/2019 09:12

Beer (less often nowadays), skiing, sports cars, the Cresta run and things like that.

I know one very high earner who does most of the cooking and never gainsays his abhorrent wife. The others tend to be a bit priapic.

Leatherflamingle · 15/04/2019 09:24

I agree with mominatrix.
I have rarely found an alpha male (type grant mitchell misogynistic specimen) high achiever.
Often involved in get rich quick schemes, dodgy property deals, car deals etc. Often networking with people that have money, and often carrying a wodge of cash as power trip.
But the ones in my experience have rarely been in pursuit of anything but money and hero status.

BadLad · 15/04/2019 09:30

I knew an absolute belter of a high achiever/misogynist, called women "snakes with tits"

Were his initials B.E.?

Hearhere · 15/04/2019 11:05

If women are snakes with tits men are just snakes

FrozenMargarita17 · 15/04/2019 12:17

Cycling
Hiking (they like to get a showy picture when they get to the top of whatever 'gap yah' type mountain it is)
Running
