help settle a debate - Alpha male misogynist type men

BlueishHueOfBlue · 14/04/2019 12:14

to ask you help settle an argument.

If you know any Alpha male misogynist type men (misogynist maybe unfair but using it for short hand) - very self confident men who tend to be high achievers, high earners and take no prisoners, what hobbies the ones you know do and where would you find them socially?

I have a theory that there is something that almost all these men do without exception... my friend disagrees. I don't want to skew my (highly scientific!) survey in advance...

I think all men do the running, cycling, golf sort of sports don't they? Younger men probably more gym, football/rugby. But it's just exercise and most of the men I know do things like this to socialise and stay healthy. Nothing to do with being alpha Confused

(The unhealthy ones play pool, darts and drink beer.)

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 14/04/2019 13:09

To be fair though, I am a woman. Professional job though not high achiever.

I hate team sport toom mainly, because if I dont want to go to an event, if its solo sport I just dont have to. Team sports rely on people being able to dedicate regularly weekly time, at set times. I prefer to train when it suits me.

And also I dont like relying on other people in general or want my performance to impact others. If I am having a shit day, it's only me that's impacted. It suits me better that Wayne

Competitive challenge events they can show off about, drinking, member's clubs that usually involve alcohol, golf including 19th hole, networking events with free bar!

TowerRingInferno · 14/04/2019 13:10

galumph - surprisingly - yes! There’s usually one person in charge organising things and telling the others what to do. Sometimes there are 2 or 3 who believe they should have that role and they come to blows. It’s all very passive aggressive with a lot of eye-rolling.

Beargrin · 14/04/2019 13:10

I agree cycling !

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 14/04/2019 13:11

Oh and will be a leading light at the local cricket club (social side) to show he's a community minded, up-standing citizen. Does some charitable stuff via the club because it looks good on his cv.

NabooThatsWho · 14/04/2019 13:14

Rugby.

damnthatoneistakenagain · 14/04/2019 13:15

They usually end up as a lycra-clad gonk who cycles 5-wide with his wanky mates every fucking weekend, clogging up the A5, and refusing to move over, as it's their 'right' to hog the whole road.

Also squash. Top nobs play squash.

Belenus · 14/04/2019 13:16

Cars. Mainly things that don't involve team work. Golf for the networking.

FYI cycling does involve team work, particularly with how a peloton functions.

The thing with any hobbies that I associate with aggressive knobend men is that they are also usually done by perfectly nice, normal people as well. Although IME people who like driving fast and think they have some sort of special powers on the roads to avoid collisions are just wankers one and all.

daisychain01 · 14/04/2019 13:17

Anything involving physical prowess, because a misogynist will always want to prove to themselves and the world that they are better, stronger and faster than a woman.

That's best achieved with sports like cycling and running. It's easy to prove they can get to the finish line quicker.

ChristineBaskets · 14/04/2019 13:18

The alpha male sexist I know doesn't do any sports, but he is a keen racist.

Mominatrix · 14/04/2019 13:18

May I ask why people think that alpha male = misogynist? Reading some of these answers, I think that posters don't know alpha male types, just insecure wankers.

Boysey45 · 14/04/2019 13:20

All sports have those arrogant wanker types. They are everywhere even in skateboarding and kayaking groups.
If its a sport where you are likely to spend a lot then I think it becomes more prevalent.
I agree with security work as well, theres some right knuckleheads in that, usually thuggish types that do bodybuilding and steroids etc.

Mominatrix · 14/04/2019 13:21

alpha male does not = sexist.

TwllBach · 14/04/2019 13:21

DP is, on paper, one of the men you are talking about. I have been known to observe that all his friends that do the same sort of thing have the same sort of traits that can be unpleasant. They all work in adventure/outdoor pursuits or at the very least do some, if not all, of the following -

Hardcore cycling, not pleasant Sunday stroll stuff
Running, not a leisurely jog but long distance
Triathlons/Ironmans
Wild swimming
Climbing
Kayaking/coasteering

While I love DP, I am the first to admit that he is selfish and self important at times, as are his friends. I wouldn't say they were particularly misogynistic though as they are used to having women instructors around them and DP in particular is of the opinion that women can do most of what he can do, albeit to different levels given physical differences.

Again, while I love him and he has mellowed to a certain extent because I have ground him down I would NEVER date a man with these interests again. Never.

Mominatrix · 14/04/2019 13:22

arrogant wanker does not = alpha male

TwllBach · 14/04/2019 13:22

Mominatrix said it better than me. I wouldn't have said they were sexist but they are alpha males that think they are better than everyone, not that men are better than women.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 14/04/2019 13:23

Hunting? X

ConversationCoat · 14/04/2019 13:23

My impression of many 'alpha male' types is that they believe in a version of masculinity that is exaggerated and toxic. They aren't actually an alpha male but just insecure, which in many cases means they are threatened by equality or (even worse) women being better than them.
I'm not sure this is as clear as I want it to be but it's late at night where I am.

BroomstickOfLove · 14/04/2019 13:24

I avoid alpha male misogynist types like the plague, so don't have any in my social circle. But the nice, egalitarian men I know have pretty similar hobbies to the ones mentioned. Apart from golf. I don't know any golfers, other than FiL who comes closer to the misogynist alpha male than anyone else I am still in touch with, so I'm going with golf.

LumpyPillow · 14/04/2019 13:24

Cycling or golf. Though golfers make my fanny flytrap shut faster. Boring as fuck, always.

BiscuitDrama · 14/04/2019 13:24

OP didn’t say alpha males are misogynists, just of the alpha males who are misogynistic, what hobby would you expect. That’s my reading of it anyway.

daisychain01 · 14/04/2019 13:26

I'm a keen cyclist and runner, and regularly get abused, insulted, spat at and, just yesterday, nearly knocked off my bike into a ditch, by a twat in a van leaning out of his open window and waving his arms and shouting at me deliberately to give me a fright.

100% of the time it's men, it's on a weekly basis and I've never ever been subjected to it by women, Men feel inadequate and threatened by female sports people.

Idontmeanto · 14/04/2019 13:26

It’s interesting that my idea of successful alpha male would include happy marriage in his success criteria and is, increasingly ,required to keep the misogyny in check.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/04/2019 13:27
