help settle a debate - Alpha male misogynist type men

BlueishHueOfBlue · 14/04/2019 12:14

to ask you help settle an argument.

If you know any Alpha male misogynist type men (misogynist maybe unfair but using it for short hand) - very self confident men who tend to be high achievers, high earners and take no prisoners, what hobbies the ones you know do and where would you find them socially?

I have a theory that there is something that almost all these men do without exception... my friend disagrees. I don't want to skew my (highly scientific!) survey in advance...

I know a few of these types and I'd say cycling and triathlon/tough mudder type competitions. I'm talking about men in their 30s/early 40s as this is the age group I know. Intensely competitive with other men in terms of their physical fitness and I would say tend to have female partners who are either into the same type of a activities or are at least very physically fit themselves. The ones I know wouldn't tolerate a chubby/unfit partner as this would reflect poorly on them. Cunts to a man, every one of them.

Golf

Eating in expensive restaurants, especially ones where they can discuss drink expensive wine

Itshightime · 14/04/2019 14:52

Shooting
Fly Fishing

Both in very expensive out-of-the-way places that cost a fortune to get to.

cupofteaandcake · 14/04/2019 14:58

I think it will be something that can be done quite easily like cycling or running, I'm going for cycling. These things are controllable, the harder you push yourself the fitter you get and you can track your times etc.

I don't think it's golf. It's very hard to get good at golf and there is proof that you are good because you have a handicap certificate. These type of men don't want to be seen weak at anything.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 14/04/2019 15:10

They're all at the swimming baths mowing people out of the way and doing tumble-turns whilst thinking they're Michael fucking Phelps.

Vulpine · 14/04/2019 16:42

Let's not forget your james cracknell rowing types

Eustasiavye · 14/04/2019 16:44

I forgot about camping.
Older types especially.
Holidays where it is zero fun for the wife.
She'd much rather be sunning herself on an all inclusive than sat in the pouring rain cold and bored.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 14/04/2019 16:49

@BlueishHueOfBlue really you should have given an age boundary. No one my age could be bothered to bugger about on a bike competitively BUT they would play quash for hours on end. . Its only been an Olympic even since 2000, so consequently triathlons are a relatively new phenomenon. You wouldn't find many 60/70/80 year olds doing a triathalon, but you'll find thousands of the buggers on golf courses.

Boysey45 · 14/04/2019 16:53

Carp Fishing. Men spend thousands on that.

steff13 · 14/04/2019 16:57

Rare steaks, poker and cigars

I enjoy all these things, and I'm not male, alpha or otherwise.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/04/2019 16:59

I don’t think people really take u golf much any more. It’s an older generation’s thing.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 14/04/2019 17:24

My dh is an alpha male type, he's successful and high earning but he's not misogynistic he's kind and respectful.
He goes to the gym that's it he doesn't have 'hobbies'

topcat2014 · 14/04/2019 17:27

@towerringinferno - I am so excited, as I am off to bellringing in 10 minutes for sunday service..

(Don't go to church though).

I can add that to my other alpha male activities of being a Beaver Leader and Charity trustee - go me :)

To be fair, we have a couple of senior partners in local law firms as well.

topcat2014 · 14/04/2019 17:28

Drag myself round a half marathon each year too..

Mind you, I am more Beta myself..

Trull · 14/04/2019 17:35

I think the definition of 'alpha male' is becoming somewhat confused on here -- some people seem to be thinking of Christian Grey or James Cracknell, others of Sid the Sexist or White Van Man.

ChristineBaskets · 14/04/2019 17:38

Trump is the epitome of alpha male misogynist and he loves playing golf and reportedly cheating at it.

Whisky2014 · 14/04/2019 17:42

If say Jason momoa is an alpha male. I'd say the misogynists you're taking about could be anyone in any role with any hobby!

TrumpsFerret · 14/04/2019 17:44

Golf

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 14/04/2019 17:55

DH has been a serious cyclist for 20 years and he's not especially alpha. He does a long ride on a Sunday but gets up stupidly early to get it out of the way without cutting into family time.

However, he has known a lot of executive types who he recka) use it as a way of opting out of family responsibilities b) spend thousands on tiny upgrades to their bikes and kit that would only make a meaningful difference to performance if you were a pro, and c) adopt special diets and obsess about their weight because they're basically cranks or eating disordered

Safiya5 · 14/04/2019 18:37

I think it’s very short -sighted and actually quite spiteful to equate “high achiever” men with “misogynists”. Does it make some women feel better to think that way? The fact is, any man from any walk of life can be a misogynist. Yes some may use cycling as a way of avoiding family responsibilities, but let’s face it, far more are likely to be evading such responsibilities by slobbing on the sofa playing video games or disappearing to the pub. It’s a mistake to stereotype such men and maybe some people just need to meet a wider range of people to challenge their belief systems.

Jsmith99 · 14/04/2019 18:41

Cycling, triathlon, running. Individual, target-oriented sports in which they can push themselves hard are very popular with high-achieving “winner” types.

changingeverything2019 · 14/04/2019 18:45

I can say who's with certainty:
Definitely cycling.
Often triathlons, especially Ironman events.

IsoscelesSandwich · 14/04/2019 18:48

Tennis

NotFatTransslender · 14/04/2019 18:48

My DP is an alpha type, he is successful and a high earner. He doesn’t really have many regular hobbies but the ones he likes talking about more than doing are golf and poker. He also does some cycling but on a very casual basis, and gym if he’s in a fitness phase (every couple of years he goes through a phase). His main hobby is gaming and/or buying stuff off Amazon!

JeffreyBeaver · 14/04/2019 18:52

I knew an absolute belter of a high achiever/misogynist, called women "snakes with tits" , oddly enough he had problems with sex and couldn't get it up
