help settle a debate - Alpha male misogynist type men

BlueishHueOfBlue · 14/04/2019 12:14

to ask you help settle an argument.

If you know any Alpha male misogynist type men (misogynist maybe unfair but using it for short hand) - very self confident men who tend to be high achievers, high earners and take no prisoners, what hobbies the ones you know do and where would you find them socially?

I have a theory that there is something that almost all these men do without exception... my friend disagrees. I don't want to skew my (highly scientific!) survey in advance...

My first thought was golf!

BlueishHueOfBlue · 14/04/2019 13:28

Thanks for all your answers.

My theory was triathlons but the amount of people who said cycling kind of fits with my theory.

As I said in my OP I was using misogynist as a short hand for the sort of personality I was trying to explain which is more to do with being "all powerful".

My theory was that this is really prevalent because it's a one person activity (not a team), is perceived to be difficult/high achieving (when in fact you can do short ones) and it lends itself to obsessive competition.

all the alpha male types I know have done or trained to do triathlons. It's almost like a club membership badge.

Women’s cycling.
Women’s basketball
Women’s weightlifting
Women’s running

Idontmeanto · 14/04/2019 13:30

Daisy, i’m sorry you had to endure that. In my head successful alpha males don’t drive vans. They employ people who do, usually while trying out their “working class banter” on them.

Mominatrix · 14/04/2019 13:30

wrong, Conversation. I know plenty of alpha males and many don't fit the toxic male stereotype. The most successful alpha male is not sporty, muscly, domineering or outwardly aggressive. He is, though, extremely focused and goal oriented. Whatever he does, he has the goal of being a pioneer in that field and turning that endeavour into a success. He is also the most generous friend and supportive spouse I know. He might be worth high 9 figures, but he could never be accused of being a sexist, misosynist, selfish or a wanker.

BigFatGoalie · 14/04/2019 13:30

Shooting and cycling

daisychain01 · 14/04/2019 13:31

Thanks for the update Blueish - I stopped being a club athlete many years ago specifically to avoid the high % knob-factor of the club members. Been much happier doing my own thing ever since!

Mominatrix · 14/04/2019 13:31

Sorry, I can't think of many of my alpha male types who are triathletes or attempting to be. I have plenty of female friends with that hobby.

Blibbyblobby · 14/04/2019 13:33

Cycling, but then so do all the other men these days so not sure that means much.

AllStar14 · 14/04/2019 13:34

Oh I know one man who does triathlons and he is exactly this type of man! How strange.

Leatherflamingle · 14/04/2019 13:35

Oh mominatrix I’d love one of those ones!
That’s not the type I visualise at all when I think of the term alpha male.
Alpha male I usually think
Alpha dickhead

Sgtmajormummy · 14/04/2019 13:36

Agree with Triathlon, Ironman.

One Alpha type I know sends me (me? That tells you a lot!) videos of himself lifting tractor tyres, wielding bow and arrows and yomping through shallow water. Not sure what sport that is...

The more “sensitive” Alpha males I know do sailing, preferably in a skipper role.

Blibbyblobby · 14/04/2019 13:36

Oh yeah, tri as well. But again, it's more because it was a man-trend a few years ago, there's a lot of sweet ones do it too.

Then again my sample of men mostly work in the City so it's possible I'm just comparing very alpha and not-quite-as-alpha-but-still-alpha.

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 14/04/2019 13:36

My theory was triathlons but the amount of people who said cycling kind of fits with my theory.

Not really. Unless you theory was 'any sport that's not a team sport'. Cycling can also be a team sport.

I would say triathlons are alpha Male.

And mysognist isnt short hand for those types of behaviour. Its means sexist twat.

Although if all the men you know that are alpha Male are mysognists I can see why you would link the too.

My dad is very alpha Male. One of those people that people pay attention to when he speaks he is very calm not aggressive at all. Though does manage to give off a 'dont mess with me vibe' without trying. He is actually very kind and gentle and the only fights he has been in have been when he has been attacked at work. He was in the police. Even then, it's all about retraining. Not hurting.

He is definitely not a mysognist. In fact my mum is and they had lots of arguments during my youth because of mums treatment of me vs my brother and her different expectations of us both. Things like I should do more chores, because dbro had to study. My education wasnt that important.

When I decided to return to work after having my first child. My dad was supportive. Mum, not so much.

But I would definitely describe dad as alpha.

Leatherflamingle · 14/04/2019 13:38

Specifically I was responding to the misogynist element in the op
I’m talking about the agressive van man swearing out the window , road ragey type.

Lichtie · 14/04/2019 13:39

Aren't most people who do cycling seriously part of a team. It's mainly a team sport.

Nameisthegame · 14/04/2019 13:39

Skiing, running

Leatherflamingle · 14/04/2019 13:39

So to define
We’ve got like
Mick from Gavin and Stacey
Or
Grant Mitchell
The two faces of alpha male

Poppyinafieldofdreams · 14/04/2019 13:40

You will find them in hospitals operating on people.

Leatherflamingle · 14/04/2019 13:40

Mick... good type
Grant... bad type
As you were

daisychain01 · 14/04/2019 13:40

Idontmeanto you're going to either laugh or gasp when I tell you that the van was actually a liveried van with the name of a local athletics club on the back.

Hence my theory about twattish blokes not being able to deal with seeing a woman on a bike going up a hill at a reasonable pace. Normally it's BMW drivers (very high % of those have nearly killed me) and boy racer types.

I keep going if only to piss them off Grin

Folf · 14/04/2019 13:42

Cars/Racing
Gym bunny
Golf
Sailing/Rowing

Charles11 · 14/04/2019 13:43

A friend of mine does triathlons and he is the nicest man you could ever meet. Not at all a misogynist. In fact he was a sahd for a good few years because his wife preferred to go back to work. He was very successful in his career too but happily put it on pause to care for his dc. He loves cycling too and generally keeping fit and is the most chilled out person I have ever known.
Of course, he may just be an anomaly...

Idontmeanto · 14/04/2019 13:43

In my mind alpha male=superior. If he’s misogynistic as well that’s 50% of the population he can disregard straight off, so they do tend to go together.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/04/2019 13:43

My alpha male is an Ironman. And he’s exactly like Mick.
