help settle a debate - Alpha male misogynist type men

BlueishHueOfBlue · 14/04/2019 12:14

to ask you help settle an argument.

If you know any Alpha male misogynist type men (misogynist maybe unfair but using it for short hand) - very self confident men who tend to be high achievers, high earners and take no prisoners, what hobbies the ones you know do and where would you find them socially?

I have a theory that there is something that almost all these men do without exception... my friend disagrees. I don't want to skew my (highly scientific!) survey in advance...

Sailing & flying

VladmirsPoutine · 14/04/2019 12:53

I don't think many of the cycling type are super bright. The cycling/rugby/pints/gym type is usually something like an electrician or a plumber.

Might you want to reconsider what you've said here?

Aquamarine1029 · 14/04/2019 12:54

Using escorts/prostitutes.

LuckyLou7 · 14/04/2019 12:54

The one I know volunteers for Mountain Rescue and is a Community First Responder - not exactly hobbies, but he likes to be seen as a hero.

Snuffalo · 14/04/2019 12:54

@Putthatlampshadeonyourhead the OP said 'what hobbies to apha male misogynists like' and then Pa1oma said her husband was an example of that sort of person. I can now see that she rolled that back in some other comments though.

This is a very odd thread all the way around.

why Poutine?

Bell ringing

The men I have in mind are all very high achieving alpha males but not misogynists (well, one has his moments!).

AlessandroVasectomi · 14/04/2019 12:56

Intrigued to know that at the age of 68, cycling makes me a candidate for alpha male status. I’m not a mysogonist though - if anything, I get along better with women than with men! I went out with a group of men last week (the husband of one of DW’s friends invited me to a concert with his group of friends) and it felt distinctly odd to be in the company of men who talk about football, drink, their fantasy women and other subjects to which I could contribute nothing. The concert was good though...

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 14/04/2019 12:57

I have one, though he isn’t a misogynist. There are definite psychopath tendencies though (without the violence). He’s very into anything competitive but solo (no Sunday league football or cricket).

Leatherflamingle · 14/04/2019 12:58

I think it depends on the definition of alpha male.
For some people it means lion slaying guy with excellent survival skills etc etc but generally a good kind. Gentle giant with skills, likes his meat and veg.
But for others it just means aggressive driver , expects to be waited on hands and foot, works as a dodgy tradesman, runs cyclists off the road , thinks people with a university education are arseholes....
Etc.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 14/04/2019 12:58

where would you find them socially? and I have a theory that there is something that almost all these men do without exception

Sport -they will all play sport and probably belong to a sports club - perhaps at the bar after - the type of sport will depend on their social class.

You aren't going to find Frankie from the council estate playing tennis or squash, any more than you are going to find privately educated Triston playing Sunday league beer belly football.

You will find all sorts playing rugby or golf though

Cupfullofjoy · 14/04/2019 12:59

I agree with pp. A misogynist is not necessarily high achieving, though will typically show alpha male behaviours.

ElloBrian · 14/04/2019 13:00

It used to be triathlons but now climbing seems to be becoming more popular. Also marathon running is a perennial favourite.

Where it will be recognised and he will be hero.
Limited to OUTSIDE of his own home though, where he’s Mr tightarse .

In my experience, running (competitively as well) or cycling or triathlon type sports as well as golfing for networking.

Fairenuff · 14/04/2019 13:06

Skiing?

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 14/04/2019 13:07

I would go with sailing and golf. It means, esp. with sailing, that he will meet like minded rich men to hob nob with and climb further up the social ladder. He might also play squash or 5 a side to show he's one of the lads but these will be at the company's sports club so not too much low-brow mixing and the main reason will be he's heard that the changing rooms are where you go to network with the CEO etc. and be all 'boys' together.
