To not pay for this ticket

DD (15)'s friend bought her a ticket to a 'meet the celebrity' type event for her birthday (£30) about a month ago, friend did check beforehand it was ok. Last week something came up which means DD can no longer go, event was 2 weeks away at that point. DD told her friend and gave her the ticket back, friend has now asked her to pay for it as she can't find someone else to go. AIBU to not pay friend for ticket or should I just pay?

As the friend is going with someone else, of course DD shouldn’t pay. The ticket was a gift.

if the friend had bought a ticket for herself and now couldn’t go because of your DD, you’d pay for both tickets. If the deal had always been that the friend bought the ticket but DD would pay for it, then she should pay whether she goes or not.

But you don’t have to pay for a gift.

Also, have a word with your DD about not letting people down in future and double checking dates before committing to things in future.

DD can’t go because the OP isn’t doing anything to help her go because she hates the friend. DD isn’t the problem here.
