Believe what a medium has said?

Has anyone had a reading from a psychic medium (or like) and had something exactly came true? Not something vague but something specific almost word for word?

“Just leave them be, they're doing no harm.”
Belief in the paranormal does a lot of harm, both to individuals and to society.

Sakura7 · 11/04/2019 10:29

Preying on vulnerable people is doing harm in my book. If you believe it's nonsense (which most rational people do) then it follows that the practitioners are exploiting people for monetary gain.

BertrandRussell · 11/04/2019 10:31

And at a time when we are being fed more and more bullshit from so many sources, it has never been more important for us to cling on to our critical thinking skills.

How come none of these psychics ever predict the winning EuroMillions numbers or when someone will get in a car crash so they can head that off and save their lives?

KissingInTheRain · 11/04/2019 12:11

How come none of these psychics ever predict the winning EuroMillions numbers...

Because, we’re told, “it doesn’t work like that”. I want to know why it doesn’t work like that.

Why are all psychic predictions of no use to anyone? Is it a law of the mystic realm that the future can only be seen in a way that’s a complete waste of time for everyone, except for the psychic who makes a profit?

Crappywife · 11/04/2019 12:12

I’ve followed this thread since I last posted and reading some of the things these so called psychics have told people are disgusting. One of the 7 principles of spiritualism is personal responsibility. Where the hell is the responsibility in telling people they see death and miscarriages for pregnant women? It boils my piss tbh. There is no harm in telling someone about a wedding or a holiday but telling someone that their dh is going to die or your going to miscarry is terrible. They aren’t even practising spiritualism as a religion. Just con artists preying on vulnerability.

Lifecraft · 11/04/2019 12:15

How open minded are you to the possibility that it's all a load of crap?

Well you obviously think so, I don’t. No more to be said then.

You really need to be more open minded about these things. Given the complete lack of evidence, and all the evidence of many respected psychics being exposed as frauds, and people like Derren Brown replicating what they do with no psychic powers, you should be considering the very real possibility that you are quite gullible and have been hoodwinked.

Try and open your mind to this possible scenario.

It seems to be, just as when a 'psychic' channels your Aunti Doris (or an elderly man who might have died from something to do with his heart, or maybe his lungs, and whose initial might be D, or maybe F?, who might be your great-uncle Derek, but who knows?), they're only allowed by the Law of the Mystic Realm to witter on about the colour of the flowers at the funeral, and liking the new sofa, and that Maureen will find her lost earring down the back of the fridge.

Just like a religion, then.

Crappywife · 11/04/2019 12:21

BartholinsSister (Sorry don’t know how to tag) but true. Sorry I’m just so shocked by these so call predictions.

Both the book and the film Nightmare Alley are a good source of sceptical information re psychic scams.

The book upon which the film was based was written by an author with a long term association with psychic scammers. Anyone interested in psychic scams would do well to read the book, which is excellent, and / or watch the film which is also fantastic and can be seen in its entirety on youtube here

Fake shamans are also extremely bad news, this piece is a must read for anyone considering visiting a psychic or "shaman"

One of the most celebrated and knowledgable investigators of psychic scammers is one of my heroes Bob Nygaard (brief audio problems in the first few seconds)

I know a man who believes he's a medium but he never claims to be able to predict the future

Lifecraft · 11/04/2019 15:21

One of the 7 principles of spiritualism is personal responsibility.

If they had any principles or personal responsibility, they wouldn't be doing it at all. BECAUSE IT'S NOT TRUE. NONE OF IT. EVER!

KissingInTheRain · 11/04/2019 15:24

I know a man who believes he's a medium but he never claims to be able to predict the future

What does he predict? The past?

waterygrass · 11/04/2019 17:40

What does he predict? The past

He doesn't predict anything. He claims to communicate with spirits.

polarpig · 11/04/2019 17:50

If people are really psychic then why do they have posters advertising when the psychic fayres are taking place?

KissingInTheRain · 11/04/2019 17:52

Oh righty. News from the presently dead, not visions of the yet to come.

Can your friend get communications from the long dead, like Claypole in Rentaghost, or is it just more immediate deceased family?

If he could have a word with Shakespeare’s spirit, for example, we could have an author’s masterclass.

waterygrass · 11/04/2019 17:57

No idea kissing. I don't believe in it, he does.

KissingInTheRain · 11/04/2019 18:13

Phew!

Belief in the paranormal does a lot of harm, both to individuals and to society.

You could say the above statement is also hearsay/unproven/a sweeping generalisation/utterly without foundation etc - a bit like saying “most people have two children” then trying to wriggle out of it
But Bert will always come back with something...

Sweetlittlepug · 11/04/2019 18:16

If people are really psychic then why do they have posters advertising when the psychic fayres are taking place?

I think the idea is to let people know about it. They don’t expect the people coming to be psychic surely.

Sweetlittlepug · 11/04/2019 18:24

How come none of these psychics ever predict the winning EuroMillions numbers or when someone will get in a car crash so they can head that off and save their lives?

Someone did just that years ago. I remember reading about it. Apparently this person had a dream of the winning numbers. She wrote them down and bought a ticket. She won a few million. I suppose this person would never have thought of herself as psychic but she definitely had a psychic moment. This is the kind of thing I believe can happen, not people who claim to be psychic and make money out of the gullible. But there are people like that as have been described on here.

HarrysOwl · 11/04/2019 18:35

By that logic, every single person that has won anything on the lottery is psychic.

Only, they're not, are they?

It's just statistics, nothing more.

KissingInTheRain · 11/04/2019 18:39

On that basis all lottery winners are psychics - otherwise they wouldn’t have predicted the winning numbers.

KissingInTheRain · 11/04/2019 18:40

Ooh, Harrys, we must be psychically joined.
