DH thinks we're going to get arrested in Dubai

Going to Dubai next week for Easter on a mini break with DH. As a tactile couple who enjoys a couple of drinks with dinner he's getting really anxious that we're going to get arrested if we a) unthinkingly give each other a peck on the cheek or b) share a bottle of wine and have a giggle.

He has googled their strict laws and legal systems LOTS.

I think he's BU, his worries and mithering are making me not look as forward to a holiday I've saved hard for as much as I otherwise would.

Are we going to get arrested?!

Just checking, you aren't taking any shorts or non-maxi dresses are you? Or short sleeved tops? Those are generally a no no, even if you do not get told off, men will stare and make you feel uncomfortable as it would be an unusual sight.

IchWill · 04/04/2019 19:20

Blimey. The OP asks a straight forward question. What's with the attitude replies?

I can't offer advice OP. Not been for the reasons you stated. Hope you have a lovely time and take on board some of you good advice you've got and will probably get more of.

Do explain, heidi how women’s rights are ‘better’ in the UAE than in the UK? Would that include Sri Lankan/Somali housemaids whose passports are kept by their employers, and who aren’t covered by labour law? Trafficked Chinese prostitutes who flock to every Ladies’ Night in the hotels? Women who report rape and are prosecuted for extramarital sex? Women on whom FGM has been performed? It’s not illegal to perform it in the UAE, though it’s now banned in government hospitals, but openly performed in other clinics.

Do tell. Hmm

willyougobacktobed · 04/04/2019 19:21

@maryberryslayers this is helpful thank you and aligns with what I thought - that we must be respectful and aware but won't get arrested if he accidentally holds my hand.

@GummyGoddess from my understanding usual beach attire is fine inside the hotel but I have dresses that cover my arms and legs for when we go elsewhere

What's the point of going that far and spending that much money to stay only in the resort? I can't understand it. Is it just to be able to say "I holiday in Dubai?"

Romax · 04/04/2019 19:26

@heidivodca

You live in Dubai

You think women have better rights in dubai

Seriously. You need to explain yourself because atm we are thinking you batshit crazy

cabcab · 04/04/2019 19:28

@heidivodca you stated they were better? I don't know how they are better and asked for an explanation? I don't know much about Dubai, so enlighten me how women's rights are better there.

underneaththeash · 04/04/2019 19:29

I wouldn’t go near the place - you do realise as a non- Muslim your testimony in a court is worth less than a Muslim, similarly for women.
If you get raped - YOU can be prosecuted for extra-marital sex.

We would never accept people being treated so badly here- so why on earth give them your money to their economy?

I won’t even transit through.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 04/04/2019 19:30

heidivodca won’t explain how “rights are better for women in Dubai” because she can’t.

heidivodca · 04/04/2019 19:30

This is also the year of tolerance in the UAE - some of you who have never been here should try it! I’m back to my gin with my gay neighbours and ill leave the DM intolerant brigade to wallow in their ignorance. Hope you have a fab holiday!

PengAly · 04/04/2019 19:30

No I wouldn’t want to be a construction worker here

Of course you wouldnt because they are slaves from Indian and Bangladesh.

PengAly · 04/04/2019 19:31

India i meant!

Romax · 04/04/2019 19:31

So Heidi you haven’t been able to enlighten us. Says it all really.

skybluee · 04/04/2019 19:32

Dubai is horrendous.

It is shocking. And as for women's rights being better over there? (!!!!!)

maryberryslayers · 04/04/2019 19:33

@willyougobacktobed unless it's Ramadan May 5th - June 4th, you don't need to cover your arms and legs outside. I wear normal shorts, vest tops, dresses, play suits etc. Just wear what you normally would.

Heratnumber7 · 04/04/2019 19:33

Surely you can hold off holding your DHs hand in public for a few days.

If you really can't, go somewhere else.

PineapplePatty · 04/04/2019 19:36

@heidivodca not sure Princess Latifa would agree that woman are treated better?

DantesInferno · 04/04/2019 19:36

@heidivodca ?? can you tell us more? as you made a bold statement

willyougobacktobed · 04/04/2019 19:37

@maryberryslayers brilliant - thank you

OP posts:
MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 04/04/2019 19:41

People need to respect the laws of the country. So what if you can't hold hands or kiss in public - you have the evening and night in your hotel. This really annoys me. Dubai is fantastic - enjoy it!

cabcab · 04/04/2019 19:42

@heidivodca yep run off!!! Ridiculous comment you can't substantiate!

heidivodca · 04/04/2019 19:45

Yes I can! I live here and have just as much freedom (if not more) than the U.K. - but what do I know I just live here! You have the ‘facts’ from the DM!!

cabcab · 04/04/2019 19:46

@heidivodca please e lighten us! Go on, tell us...we're waiting!

caughtinanet · 04/04/2019 19:48

I can't think of anything that I can't do as a woman in the UK, can you give an example please heidi
