DH thinks we're going to get arrested in Dubai

Going to Dubai next week for Easter on a mini break with DH. As a tactile couple who enjoys a couple of drinks with dinner he's getting really anxious that we're going to get arrested if we a) unthinkingly give each other a peck on the cheek or b) share a bottle of wine and have a giggle.

He has googled their strict laws and legal systems LOTS.

I think he's BU, his worries and mithering are making me not look as forward to a holiday I've saved hard for as much as I otherwise would.

Are we going to get arrested?!

I am slightly surprised that anyone doesnt know that Dubai and most of its neighbouring countries have such draconian laws.

Its why I would never consider that area of the world as a place holiday or live.

willyougobacktobed · 04/04/2019 18:55

@Jsmith99 we are completely aware of them but having never travelled to such a strictly Muslim country (we've been to Northern Africa) I was hoping for some real life experiences and examples

Pick up a tabloid - they love stories like this

PineapplePatty · 04/04/2019 18:58

I wouldn't spend a penny of my money in that country.

Dreadful place and the woman are treated appallingly.

MadameAnchou · 04/04/2019 18:58

Jesus, grow up and reign it in if you want to go there.

whiteroseredrose · 04/04/2019 18:58

Just checking that you're a woman. Not sure if I'd go to Dubai as a same sex couple.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 04/04/2019 18:58

I’ve lived there for 12 years. What specifically would you like to know?

cabcab · 04/04/2019 18:59

@willyougobacktobed I think you were hoping lots of people on here had visited Dubai and were going to say it's fine, they won't bat an eyelid....unfortunately most people are of the opinion it's risky, so so please be careful.

@CallmeKaren who pissed on your chips? OP was only asking opinions!

It's a disgusting place.

You will probably be fine - they don't tend to arrest rich white women unless they've done something that really irritates them (for instance, expats with debt issues).

I've spent time there working with NGOs. But I wouldn't be comfortable holidaying in, and therefore supporting, a country with such an abysmal human rights record.

caughtinanet · 04/04/2019 19:00

Just because one person did something and wasn't arrested it doesn't mean you wouldn't be for doing the same thing and vice versa, real life examples aren't going to help you, sticking to the rules is the best bet for not getting arrested

Unfinishedkitchen · 04/04/2019 19:00

They can do what they want in their own country but I wouldn’t want to live like that so I’m not going. Nothing about that place sounds attractive to me. My friend went out there with her DH to visit his sister and said she wasn’t treated very well. Her DH and his attractive younger were treated with respect but my middle aged friend wasn’t treated very well.

Places like this and Brunei where they’ve started stoning homosexuals won’t be getting my money.

Sagradafamiliar · 04/04/2019 19:01

Why does he think you're going to be arrested if he's looked into the law and culture and understands them?

Samind · 04/04/2019 19:01

Google Jamie Harron... 🙄

CallmeKaren · 04/04/2019 19:01

Nobody pissed on my chips and I'm not being rude.
The OP sounds like she wants to bring her Western ideas to Dubai and disrespect their laws. So yes, it is very likely she will get arrested!

PengAly · 04/04/2019 19:01

Why would you want to visit and support a country that practices modern slavery? Vile place to go.

cabcab · 04/04/2019 19:03

@CallmeKaren I was one of three who thought you were......must all be wrong?

ElloBrian · 04/04/2019 19:03

How long are you going for?
Presumably you’ve paid for your flights already. I’d get a connecting local flight to Muscat and go there instead if I were you. It’s nicer and less strict.

Nicolastuffedone · 04/04/2019 19:03

Well, if you know the laws inside out and you’re planning on being cautious and respectful, I’m not sure why you posted??

heidivodca · 04/04/2019 19:03

I live in Dubai - it’s an amazing wonderful Emirate (as is the rest of the UAE). Be respectful and tolerant and you’ll find the same returned to you! Rights for women here are better than the U.K. imo! No I wouldn’t want to be a construction worker here or in the U.K., however the life here for all of us is better than our home country. If you’ve not lived here don’t comment on what you know nothing off!

heidivodca · 04/04/2019 19:04

Be prepared for the heat - averaging 36 at the moment!

user1498572889 · 04/04/2019 19:05

My husband and I used to go to Dubai a lot. Holding hands and a peck on the cheek will not get you arrested. Groping each other in a public place is not really acceptable anywhere in the world. Dubai is a lovely place and the people are really nice. The reason we don’t go anymore is that it has got too popular and is too busy now. We like peace and quiet.

heidivodca · 04/04/2019 19:06

Of !!

DantesInferno · 04/04/2019 19:06

Rights for women here are better than the U.K.

Hows that then?

CallmeKaren · 04/04/2019 19:07

The OP is saying that she intends on PDA's and drinking and getting merry, despite knowing that both of those things could get her arrested. She apparently knows exactly what is involved but is couching an annoyance about the laws with a veiled innocent, will I get arrested question. She knows exactly what she's doing.
