I'm 99.9% certain this never contained palm oil. Yet now it does? What the eff and geoff is wrong with having PEANUT OIL in Peanut butter?!

Other than the fact they can obviously replace it with bloody Palm Oil and sell the peanut oil on for a profit 🙄

Didn't it used to just be peanuts in it? Wasn't that their whole marketing strategy?

Now to get palm oil free Peanut Butter I have to pay £5 for a jar the size of a small Marmite pot 😭

that should read - *sustainable palm oil is the lesser of many evils

Sexnotgender · 03/04/2019 16:36

We have started making our own.

We found a pip and nut cookbook in tk maxx for about £1 and its great! DH loves almond butter so we’re starting with that but will branch out to more interesting stuff soon.

NewYear2018 · 03/04/2019 16:39

It does say on the ingredients label 'Organic Sustainable Palm Oil'.
Dunno if that helps. Confused

BikeRunSki · 03/04/2019 16:40

I get big tubs/jars of Suma, Meriduan, Pip and Nut and a body building brand from health shops or Amazon. We get through tonnes of peanut butter. Those brands are all just peanuts, salted or unsalted.

Threefaries · 03/04/2019 16:42

I buy Active Foods peanut butter by the bulk load. It is delicious.

Every shop, whether online or in store now takes hours to check ingredients so I don't buy anything with palm oil in it. I don't care if it's sustainable it make food taste of oily shit.

I had a rare visit to M&S and got excited about buying some lemon and lime jaffa cakes and teacakes- now both contain palm oil so on the boycott list, as is a lot of their chocolate.

I only buy Green & Blacks milk chocolate, was going to add to delivery - no longer available. They have been bought by the same company who have destroyed Cadburys so guess it won't be long before that also contains palm.

There is not a single Tesco own product cake, pie, cornish pasty, biscuit and even some bread that doesn't contain it.

CatCatDog · 03/04/2019 16:59

@isabellerossignol Try storing the jar upside down so the oil is at the bottom when you flip it to take the lid off.

DontCallMeShitley · 03/04/2019 17:05

I stopped buying Sun Pat because of palm oil. Am fed up with having to read the label on everything because it is even in lemon curd, and instant soup, pastry, olive spread....

Waitrose say theirs is sustainable but none of it is, just another lie like sweeteners being good for us.

I buy Pip n Nut or Meridian now, depending on what is in the shops.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 03/04/2019 17:05

My Protein do a bulk tub, no palm oil.

Meridian is nice.

I thought Sun-pat did have some, last time I looked?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 03/04/2019 17:06

Morrisons best of is just peanuts.

Fiveredbricks · 03/04/2019 17:25

@SilverySurfer tescos own brand milk chocolate doesn't contain Palm Oil afaik. That may have changed in the past few months though.

I'm not that arsed about it being 'sustainable' or not. Big business will do what big business does and we can do sod all to stop that. Primarily my concern is that it shouldn't be ingested! And it is in almost everything now!

It doesn't even make sense to put it in chocolate when cocoa butter is a sodding byproduct!!

Why not make your own, it's dead simple, just roast the nuts and whizz up

thedevilinablackdress · 03/04/2019 17:32

Why do they have added oil anyways?
Make my own and don't add anything apart from a little bit of salt.

isabellerossignol · 03/04/2019 18:49

I'm just back from Asda where I spent ages reading labels. The Whole Earth in that shop didn't have palm oil, but I was thinking maybe that's older stock or something?

isabellerossignol · 03/04/2019 18:49

And the Sun Pat didn't have any either.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 03/04/2019 18:56

I just chuck a bag of salted peanuts in my magimix. Works for me.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 03/04/2019 18:59

I don’t buy palm oil products if I can help it. But that is for orang utang reasons.

What are the health issues?

PickAChew · 03/04/2019 19:02

Whole earth has always contained a tiny amount of palm oil to stop it from separating. They now do a palm oil free variant, which does separate. www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Whole-Earth-Organic-Crunchy-Palm-Oil-Free-Peanut-Butter/318709011

HicDraconis · 03/04/2019 19:14

Best peanut butter in the world is Pic’s - which you might have to buy online in the UK unless your local Tesco has it (may only be London).

EggysMom · 03/04/2019 19:19

I stood in Asda last week reading the peanut butter ingredients, ended up with SunPat smooth as that did not list palm oil in its ingredients, only peanut oil.

FindPrimeLorca · 03/04/2019 19:19

Sun Pat used to have palm oil labelled as “vegetable oil”. It now uses peanut oil.

PickAChew · 03/04/2019 19:22

And (I got distracted by a child foraging for food) the stuff with palm oil isn't full of it. It's 0.5oz or less in a 1lb jar. Less than 3%.

multivac · 03/04/2019 19:26

The Aldi Foodie one has palm oil in it now. I was literally tasting it yesterday thinking 'this tastes exactly like Whole Earth' (which is the ONLY peanut butter I like).... and I suspect the introduction of palm oil to both indicates that it is indeed the same product, repackaged.

chemenger · 03/04/2019 19:26

Sainsbury's adds palm oil to joints of beef, and never replied to my email asking why.

PickAChew · 03/04/2019 19:27

Doesn't sun pat have sugar added?

Answered my own question, it may or may not.

E471 looks yummy, though.
www.food-info.net/uk/e/e471.htm
That may be made from palm oil. Or it could be made from pork fat.
