To not understand why people want a nice house?

My two friends are into buying plants/cushions/ornaments/flowers etc etc for their house but i don't get it.
What's the point? Only the people living in it see it.
As long as you have the basics fridge /bed etc
Why do you need all the rest?
A bloody tray with scented candles /those smelly things with the sticks etc
I've tried to get into homey things but I just can't
Am I the only woman who doesn't get it?

Because things look nice and / or are comfy and / or colourful.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 02/04/2019 16:34

Okaaay... ConfusedHmm

kaytee87 · 02/04/2019 16:36

Only the people living in it see it.

Do you never have visitors?

Even if I had no visitors, I'd want a nice house. I like to spend time in a nice atmosphere. Everyone's definition is different of course.

Sirzy · 02/04/2019 16:36

Because your home is meant to be a nice relaxing place and for many people how it looks helps with that.

SpannerD · 02/04/2019 16:36

That shit's not for visitors, it's for me.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 02/04/2019 16:37

Because people (not just women) like different things? Confused

Bibijayne · 02/04/2019 16:37

But I like looking at it.

BlueMerchant · 02/04/2019 16:37

I love my home to look nice. I like it to be comfortable and a nice environment to come home to relax in. Having nice things around adds to my sense of well-being and makes me feel good.

tittletattlelolo · 02/04/2019 16:38

Obviously I like a nice clean and tidy house.
I just mean all the accessories etc
Blankets draped over coffee tables etc
Flowers on top of cookers
I haven't got the energy for all that.

Yeah sexist OP, my DH picks things up for the house too...shock horror

Bambamber · 02/04/2019 16:38

Because the people living in the house like looking at said items? Hmm

I like plants and cushions for my own benefit. I certainly don't NEED those items but I like them so I have them.

RatherBeRiding · 02/04/2019 16:39

Some people like minimalist. Some people like lots of ornaments. Some people like bare white walls. Some people like covering brightly coloured walls with dozens of pictures and mirrors.

Most people like to have their home like they want it.

Why wouldn't you want to live somewhere that's as YOU want it?

Bussells · 02/04/2019 16:39

Why bother having anything nice or beautiful to look at anywhere then? Confused can you really not understand why people like their houses to look nice? What an odd thread.

Ohyesiam · 02/04/2019 16:40

Some people( me included) are very affected by their physical environment and aesthetics. Beauty and order feel calming and expansive.
Its fine if no one else sees it, it’s there to have an effect on me. But people generally do like my style, and that’s ok too.

weirdbutok · 02/04/2019 16:40

I fail to believe that anyone is stupid enough to not understand why people want their houses to look nice....Hmm

GummyGoddess · 02/04/2019 16:41

It makes me happy. Don't you have pictures on your walls or anything? When I'm surrounded by things I like it makes me happy and relaxed.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 02/04/2019 16:41

I like flowers because I like colour and the way they smell, I especially like them when I've grown them and cut them from the garden. I have a blanket folded over the back of the sofa so I can have a nap, or snuggle and read a book, I like the smell of nice scented candles, and the level of lighting they give. You don't, your call. I've worked in prisons and dint see my home as somewhere utilitarian, it's somewhere inviting to relax and invite company.

needsleepzzz · 02/04/2019 16:42

To make a house a home? I love having scented candles and flowers, as does my husband, lots of cushions can make a sofa so much more comfortable to snuggle down on, same with throws

JK2012 · 02/04/2019 16:42

I’m pretty house proud, love clean and tidy but I hate too much stuff around and quite minimalist tbh.

Alsohuman · 02/04/2019 16:42

It brings me joy.

misskatamari · 02/04/2019 16:42

I wouldn't put flowers on a cooker or a blanket on a coffee table, as they seem like silly ideas which hinder the actual purpose of the items, but I do like my home to have nice things in to look at. So a few nice cushions, the odd ornament etc. I don't think it's odd to want to be surrounded by things you like to look at in your home

BossAssBitch · 02/04/2019 16:43

Blankets draped over coffee tables, flowers on top of cookers? d'fuck?

My home is my sanctuary and I get a lot of out making it beautiful. I love flowers in every room and for my house to smell gorgeous (scented candles, etc). This is for me and my DH and also so it's an inviting place for our guests to come and stay.

GrumpyOldMare · 02/04/2019 16:44

My home is full of ''homey things'' - candles, incense, loads of pictures and photos. I've often been told how cosy it is.I don't ''need'' all these bits and bobs but I WANT them,so I have them. My home,so I have what I like around me.

I don't do it for visitors,just myself.

BlueJava · 02/04/2019 16:44

Because it's nice to live somewhere that looks nice, is comfortable and also have some changes to decor etc. Makes it feel far more homely and welcoming.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 02/04/2019 16:44

I'm assuming you don't bother with clothing either, other than perhaps a Hessian sack to spare your modesty?
