To not understand why people want a nice house?

tittletattlelolo · 02/04/2019 16:33

My two friends are into buying plants/cushions/ornaments/flowers etc etc for their house but i don't get it.
What's the point? Only the people living in it see it.
As long as you have the basics fridge /bed etc
Why do you need all the rest?
A bloody tray with scented candles /those smelly things with the sticks etc
I've tried to get into homey things but I just can't
Am I the only woman who doesn't get it?

Look at it another way op, if I, as a single full-time-working mum, am going to be at home most nights, I want to be in a lovely environment, with books and art and things that help me to relax.

Bleak and basic is hardly going to help dispel the loneliness Smile

Ravenesque · 02/04/2019 17:04

I don't have matching stuff, but when I see things that make me feel happy inside if I can afford them, then I buy them or wait until I can buy them looking forward to having them. For example - like seriously, Raven, as if anyone cares! - there are three brass "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" monkeys in a shop in the village and I am so looking forward to having them in my home. I buy things that make me happy because they will become things that I love and being surrounded by things I love makes my home feel like a home rather than somewhere that makes me feel depressed because it says nothing about me and who I am.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 02/04/2019 17:04

"Obviously I like a nice clean and tidy house."
But what's the point? Only the people living in it see it.

caughtinanet · 02/04/2019 17:05

OP in not everyone is the same as me shock!

Do you really not understand that people are different and like different things?

SerenDippitty · 02/04/2019 17:05

Scented candles give off toxic gases. As do unscented ones made of paraffin.

Springwalk · 02/04/2019 17:05

The blankets are for snuggling on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The candles are for the evenings and create relaxation. Flowers fill the house with scent and add to the feeling of fresh loveliness and oxygen. Plants etc the same and help create calm. All have uses.
I couldn’t imagine not having these things in our home. It would be a cold and a sterile functional place to live in without them.

TapasForTwo · 02/04/2019 17:06

I prefer the minimalist look, and don't care for candles and ornaments (I dislike dusting), but I have photos, pictures and flowers because I like them.

Ravenesque · 02/04/2019 17:06

Oh, and like some others a lot/most of my stuff is secondhand. All of my furniture is secondhand.

BillyGoatGruff007 · 02/04/2019 17:10

Horses for courses op - some folk liked these once upon a time..... Shock

My best friend is a bit like you OP, he likes minimalist, grey and functional.

I'm more of a bells and whistles kind of person. I love lots of colour, flowers candles throws, cushions and I'm quite artistic /creative. I aspire to be that couple from that château program.

Stargazer888 · 02/04/2019 17:13

I love design. I think of my home as my art piece. I like things to looks pretty and it makes me happy and brings me a lot of joy. I love beautiful art work, and pillows and plants and candles. It makes me happy. It doesn't matter if anyone else is visiting, I have flowers out for me more often than not.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/04/2019 17:15

@tittletattlelolo - do you really not understand that everyone isn’t like you, and some people like different things to you? Okay, then.... Hmm

TeenTimesTwo · 02/04/2019 17:17

Because the extra items 'spark joy' or a useful.
Our house is quite cluttered, but the individual objects spark memories, or are just peaceful/fun/whatever to look at.

PuppyMonkey · 02/04/2019 17:19

So OP, you have literally no “homey things” in your home. No nice quilt covers on your bed, no mirrors, no sofa, no dining table? All of these are homey things that people choose according to their individual taste. You're no different to people who choose to add flowers and candles etc to their rooms. You do get it really.

tittletattlelolo · 02/04/2019 17:19

I'm not slagging anyone off.
Everyone has different tastes
I tried getting into it before but I couldn't work out what matched with what etc

Stargazer888 · 02/04/2019 17:21

Ok so it sounds more like you don't know how to put together a cohesive design. It's not that you aren't into it, you just don't know how to do it. That's very different.

tittletattlelolo · 02/04/2019 17:21

@PuppyMonkey like I said in my post,I have all the basic stuff.
But no I don't have any mirrors on the wall but I do have a bathroom mirror that I do my make up in.
I have a couple of canvas pictures on the wall and obviously cushions on my sofa but no candles or flowers etc

OP posts:
tittletattlelolo · 02/04/2019 17:22

@Stargazer888 I wouldn't know where to start tbh.
I have looked round homsesense and found it overwhelming.
Maybe if someone did it all for me and I could just walk in and it was done I would love it.

tittletattlelolo · 02/04/2019 17:23

@IwantedtobeEmmaPeel nobody would want to live in filth tho surely.
Germs etc

That vase of flowers has obviously been put on the hob for the Instagram. I'll happily do that: shove a few things round the kitchen to take the pic, hide the grim kettle and DP's Dalek-esque coffee grinder. Takes 30 seconds and brings me joy.

My flat is actually fairly spartan in terms of the amount of stuff (don't have a coffee table to put a blanket on), but it's all pretty and comfy and makes me happy on a 24/7 basis; mostly second-hand, and cut flowers are my only environmental vice. I could live in a dank undecorated Fritzl cave with just a deckchair to sit on and the big light on overhead, but I'd be bloody miserable.

It's not terribly difficult to work out that people like to live somewhere pleasant, and we all have different ideas as to what that is. I'd break out in hives in Mrs Hinch's home but give me Kate Lavie's any day.

Orangecookie · 02/04/2019 17:25

I think if you haven’t got the energy for it you haven’t got the energy for you. As a house only becomes a home, when it is a reflection of you. It’s so nice being somewhere beautiful inside. So restful and relaxing.

katseyes7 · 02/04/2019 17:25

Are you my mother reincarnated? She thought l was "fussy" because l liked things to match.
l'm not talking Kelly Hoppen level here. Just shades of the same colour.

Nanalisa60 · 02/04/2019 17:26

Flowers on top of cookers!! what’s that all about!!

But candles !! cushions and throws on the sofa I’m all for that makes it homely!!

Orangecookie · 02/04/2019 17:26

Bleurgh to candles though.

PuppyMonkey · 02/04/2019 17:26

Why have you got canvas pictures? Why have you got cushions? They’re not basic things.
