After another local Facebook thread about piles of dog poo in our area it got me thinking about why dog owners won't pick up?

Aibu to ask exactly why people don't pick up after their dogs? Is it laziness? Forgotten dog poo bags? Lack of bins? Or just don't you agree with it? Do you view it the same as cat or fox poo for example.

Is anyone brave enough to admit on here that they don't always pick up and explain why?

Can't help you I'm afraid. I always pick up - would be mortified to inadvertently miss one and have someone tell me/see me.

Ugh I cannot stand dog owners who don't pick up their dog's poo. Vile creatures, and I always hope they step in it the next day when it's still lying there.

The piles of dog poo that have angered people this week are right outside a primary school, so every kid has been stepping in it and prams being pushed through it. Disgusting!

What goes through the owners head... their dog does a giant poo in the middle of pavement. I just don't get why you wouldn't pick it up!

Because some owners are selfish idiots.

Others will pick up on paths but not if it's in a field or away from the path, which may stop humans stepping in it but I've seen my dog run through more than one pile of shit accidentally so it's still not great < not envy.

I caught someone who was about to leave some on the edge of my elderly neighbour's front garden last year. They were yanking their dog away (obviously mortified but no excuse) until I shouted 'do you need a bag' before they had the chance to vanish. Vile behaviour.

I am a dog owner. I always pick up.

There is no excuse not too.

Most dog owners do pick up, it will only take one or two to leave it every time in the same area for it to get bad.

It is disgusting though, where I live it's the same people that spit everywhere who leave it, filthy bastards.

Today, I was on a walk and I realised I had run out of poo bags. I looked around and found a littered biscuit wrapper that I used to try and pick up as much as I could (getting more on my hands then I cared for ). There was some left but I honestly couldn't do any more.

If I can be bothered to do that, then people have no excuse.

Honestly I think it’s just laziness and not giving a shit (pun intended). They’re happy to have a cute pet and all the fun bits of having a dog, but don’t want to do the grubby bits, and don’t care about that poo once they leave. They’ve gone, so it has no impact on them – they don’t care if anyone steps in it, or the mess it causes – it’s no longer in their sphere of caring.

I live in Central London. There are a fair number of dog owners in the area. I haven't seen any dog poo on pavements around here in a long, long time. The great majority of dog owners or walkers are very diligent and these kinds of threads seem more anecdotal then reflect a lot of UK streets. Ironically, more people casually litter although that seems to have gotten better too. It’s the kind of subject matter people love to moan about despite in reality it being far less of an issue.

I always do- I did go out once without bags though in a rush but thankfully it was a wooded path and blended in

I live in the countryside and dog owners seem to think it's ok just to leave piles of poo in the grass as it's not on a pavement.
I absolutely hate it. My kids are constantly getting it on the shoes and up they're trousers. It makes me mad. PICK IT UP wherever the dog poos, countryside or not people still walk along footpaths or verges.
It would also seem that because it's the countryside people think it's ok to not have their dogs on leads and let them come running up barking and jumping at me and my kids. My kids are terrified of dogs due to bad experiences like this. I hate hue they jump up and scratch me and put their muddy paws on my clean trousers and their disgusting dog drool on my clothes. Grrrr!
Dog owners clear up your dogs poo and control your dogs behaviour. Even in the countryside.

Could that be because boroughs such as Westminster have a penalty fine of £500 if you leave dog poo on the pavement (and lots of cctv)?
I work in Central London but live in an outer suburb. We definitely have plenty of poo on the pavements, parks in our suburb though lots of us are responsible dog owners and pick up our dog's poo (and sometimes that of others too).

Always pick up. I've even sacrificed a sock the one time I forgot bags. It was so sad, it was a beautiful sock

@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork Not Westminster but next to it. I think fines for littering and dog fouling are pretty standard across most of London boroughs though, so perhaps they are a good deterrant. My inlaws live just outside of London and I haven't noticed any dog poos either. I have criss crossed a lot of the UK and in recent years, I have not noticed at least the pavements having any obvious mess either. I genuinely believe that the great majority of dog owners are actually diligent about picking after their dog.

I am a country living dog owner. Yes, if I am walking down a lane and I have run out / forgotten / given way my last bag and the hound decides to do an extra poo I will Stick and Flick in to the base of a hedge (road side not through to the other side)..

Otherwise I bag it and bin it, there are always specific poo bins and brightly coloured posters, apparently designed by local school kids, telling me I must do so

But I do wonder how they dispose of poo and plastic bags, so I had a quick look, it is quite contradictory!

Also, in answer to your original question, I can't honestly say I've picked up every single poo. There have been times hes run off and I've seen him squat but by the time I've get there, I couldn't find it. I've done the stick and flick a few times.

But I never leave it on a path, garden, park etc.

Its disgusting,we get a fair bit where we live too.If I see a dog pooing I always watch the owners,if they didn't pick it up I would definitely say something its gross

On my first visit to Battersea Park (with dd’s dogs) I was really surprised to find out doggy bags were NOT provided. I did what I could using leaves.
Where I’m from bags are available everywhere, not the UK.

It's the same mentality of people who fly tip. "Once I have left the scene and can't see it any more it's not my problem and I don't care"

I always pick up my dogs poo. I once forgot bags and went straight home then back in the car to pick up. It was right in the middle of the pavement! I think people who don't pick up their dogs poo are serial offenders. There's a whole load on our route to school over various and it all looks the same weird orangey colour yuk

The one time I didn't pick up, I corgot the bags, went straight back home, got bags, returned and picked it up.

Some arse has let their dog leave a multi-log dog poop right where my dog goes (opposite our flat) and haven't picked up. I'm pissed AF because anyone could walk in that, it's on a bit of grass which I think will become a pavement when they finish the housing estate so it's used a lot. And, people are us take the dog there several times a day and I don't want to be pinned with the blame because we take a stack of bags out each time because dog sometimes goes twice. You know, the inconvenient ive-just-tied-the-bag second poop.

OH is older than me and when he grew up you didn't have to pick up poops by law. He didn't. I've stressed to him that under no circumstances is he to leave poop. He has a poop phobia type issue and I'm proud of him for managing to pick up.

If poop-phobic people, people with just socks or people with just a stick or biscuit wrapper can do it then anyone can.

Anyone who’s getting on a little will remember a time when there was a great deal more dogshit everywhere - the idea of picking up your dog’s crap would have seemed ridiculous. If you were a really conscientious owner you dragged Rover into the gutter for him to do his business. In the same way that people don’t think it’s Ok to drive half cut anymore, I think most people do pick up after their dogs now - attitudes have definitely changed. However, that’s not much comfort if you’ve just now stepped in shit. I’m afraid there will always be a hardcore of selfish, antisocial, irresponsible people.
