After another local Facebook thread about piles of dog poo in our area it got me thinking about why dog owners won't pick up?

Aibu to ask exactly why people don't pick up after their dogs? Is it laziness? Forgotten dog poo bags? Lack of bins? Or just don't you agree with it? Do you view it the same as cat or fox poo for example.

Is anyone brave enough to admit on here that they don't always pick up and explain why?

If you dont like walking around with dog poo bags full of poo I suggest you don't own a dog

We always pick up, we have several dogs. We make sure we carry vast amounts of bags with us when we take them out - and yes, we've been known to carry dog poo bags for miles in the countryside. Even if you're in the middle of nowhere, and you think that it won't be stood in, it can have major effects on livestock - cows, horses, sheep, pigs, etc - can all be affected by it, as well as humans.

We've recently bought a Dicky Bag (like a mini dog poo cool bag) to carry poo in when we can't bin it easily - that contains a freshner thing, and space for quite a few poo bags, and clips onto leads or coats or belts, so will hopefully make it much less vile to carry distances.

I was sat enjoying the weather in the park today. A lady rode by on a mobile scooter with a little pug dog. She was asking passers by if they would pick up the mess her dog made. She had bags and hand sanitizer ready in her basket. One young lad obligingly stopped to help. Never seen that before.

The one and only time I didn't pick up was because I put a different coat on and somehow forgot to grab some poo bags out the cupboard - however I bumped into a fellow dog walker a few minutes later and asked them for a spare bag and went back for it. If I hadnt bumped into someone my plan was to ask for a carrier bag from the corner shop further down, I can't stand other people leaving dog poo so I would have been a hypocrite to leave it myself.

On my mums estate (I'm on their FB page, I like to keep an eye of things around there as we are planning to move there in a few years time), the local school did a competition for kids to make posters to remind/tell people to pick up the dog poo and the winning poster got made up in bulk by a local printing business owned by a family who lived on the estate for free and volunteers put them up all over the estate. By all accounts this has worked well as there's less FB posts complaining about dog poo!

We pick up our dogs mess and other dogs mess that might be round it - for fear of accusations.

no bin is NOT an excuse for not picking up. I have a padded container which has 2 compartments. A big one to put your used bag full of dog poo in and a smaller one for unused poo bags.

If you can’t be bothered to pick up dog poo you shouldn’t own a dog, simples.

Literally last week my dog pooped in stinging nettles and I couldn't manage to get all of it because it hurt too bad

But generally dog shit on open grass is a huge issue on my regular walks. It's disgusting and I resent having to clean it off my dog's paws once we get home, if he accidentally steps in it.

Vulpine, I would suggest that no dog owner LIKES walking around with a bag or bags full of poo. It is though part of dog owning that we accept.

As I said before, my dog goes very soon after leaving the house so if somewhere there are no or few bins (such as where I used to live) I have to carry it for around an hour or even longer. He will then go at least another 2 times on the walk.

I always pick up unless I cannot physically get to it - e.g., up a steep bank in a patch of brambles. If I cannot get to it (I am fit and do make an effort to get whatever I possibly can!!) then no one certainly is going to be able to step in it.

I live in the country. Our driveway is 300m long and is a public footpath, it is not visible from the house.
The amount of dog dirt left on the grass verges is truly disgusting and it is not a particularly busy path.
I don't think people even carry bags in the country because they don't want to have to carry the used ones.

Also, why can't the dog owners guide their dogs where to poop? Dogs can be taught not to poo on the pavement or wherever but wait till a designated area.

As a dog owner we always carry poo bags. But there has been one occasion when we were walking and chatting and our dog who was on the lead did a poo behind us and we only were aware when someone told us. We cleared up with red faces.
We have noticed dogs off lead pooing and their owners doing nothing, this seems to be the common problem. It usually happens with larger dogs.

This is why I don’t have a dog, the thought of picking up after it turns my stomach plus all the other things that come with dog ownership, flaming dog next door barks enough without adding anymore!

This. It's one of the reasons why I wouldn't want to own a dog.

I did choose to be a parent, though, and for that reason I accepted that as a consequence I would have to spend the first couple of years changing their nappies and then going through the stage of potty training.

As a dog owner this drives me mad. I always take poo bags out with me (though my dog still insists on pooping in the back yard instead. If I see a fresh looking one while out walking ai always get nervous that someone is going to think it was me/my dog.

If your dog poo is too gross for you to carry in a bag for an hour – and you like your dog! – don't you think it's too gross for passers-by, including non-dog-owners, to step over/around on their walk?

I've got a friend who has 3 DDs and a dog. She regularly has her DDs with her when she takes her dog for a walk and dog shit left on the ground really annoys her, as her DDs then step in it. So she clears up behind the inconsiderate dog owners.

We live rurally, when I walk the dog on the local recreation ground I pick up the shit - had to do it with dock leaves one day because i’d used both the bags I took with me. But when I walk him up the lane or across a field no way am I picking it up. Our local Facebook group was a sea of incredulity when someone who had recently moved here suggested that people should pick up their horse shit.

People not picking it up gives other owners a bad name.
I was once walking my dog in the local park, and there was a grandad and his grandkids playing on the other side of the park in the children's play area.
My dog did a wee, 100% nothing more, I was standing next to her, she was on her lead, and I've got bags in my pocket. We carry on walking.
Grandad comes closer and starts shouting and swearing at me for not picking up after my dog. He was mega aggressive and wouldn't listen to me when I kept trying to explain she hadn't pooped.
I don't want my local park full of dog shit either!

Oh the joys!

I have just come back from our local 'off lead' spot. Beautiful place, well fenced in, kept by local council, advertised as off lead friendly, poo bin every couple of hundred yards, emptied daily.

My dog was about 20 yeards from me when he squatted. I watched and we walked on. A rugby player sized man (there are lots of those round here, prime rugby country) hurtled down the slope towards me shouting that I hadn't picked up after my dog. I explained he had only weed. He bellowed that a dog squatting was pooing not weeing and asked me if I was "Fucking thick or something" - but with fewer consonants.

I explained my dog was a puppy and hadn't started cocking his leg yet... he had not pood he had weed, I was watching. He bellowed a bit more, waved his arms around and went quite red in the face.

Even more so when his son caught up with us, another rugby sized young man. He said "Hi Curious, hows CuriousPuppy doing?" - an ex student who I regularly see out on walks, our dogs play quite well.

RugbyDad mumbled soemthing and they both wandered off. I do wonder what their conversation was like (I'll be having a meeting with RugbyWife during the week too, wonder if I should mention it?)

Always pick up after my two. Though has been odd occasion in woods where they’ve run a distance off and I’ve seen them crouching but when got up to them couldn’t find a poo.

However have been shouted at in broad daylight by a woman a few streets away for not picking up after my dog when neither dog had even poo’d! One had cocked their leg for a wee (on grass verge next to path). I told her there was no poo but she wouldn’t have it - shouting and watching me till we were out of sight. Not a nice experience

I live next to a bit of extra grass on the block, it is basically a shit park. I did once open my front window and ask a guy (politely) to pick up the poo his dog had just finished on the front patch of grass, guess where he goes now? Round the fucking side! I know where he lives but am not brave enough to leave it on his car door handles doorstep.

Am a dog owner and always pick up. Someone round here must have a massive dog or small horse and they never ever seem to pick up so I have taken to picking up that as well and if I find out who it is then I shall report them to the Council. I don't want poo on my shoes or my dog's paw and I always pick up including on grass verges, in woodland - everywhere. I even have a small torch on me to locate poo when in the dark! My poo bag is ready primed the minute my dog lowers himself by even a centimetre
