After another local Facebook thread about piles of dog poo in our area it got me thinking about why dog owners won't pick up?

Aibu to ask exactly why people don't pick up after their dogs? Is it laziness? Forgotten dog poo bags? Lack of bins? Or just don't you agree with it? Do you view it the same as cat or fox poo for example.

Is anyone brave enough to admit on here that they don't always pick up and explain why?

Yes! The days of white dog poo being absolutely everywhere are long gone - other colours available, obviously.

We just need people my age to fuck off and die, then there won't be anyone left alive from the pre-poo-bag era

My ex bil used to let their little dog out of their flat totally unsupervised - he used to just wander freely around the grassy area in front of the flats, pavement and parking areas merrily shitting allover the shop. Lazy twat couldn't be arsed to walk him.

I did point out that kids could be blinded by it, he really didn't care. I think that's all it is - people don't give a fuck.

I think people who don't pick up dog poo are sad, embittered and disaffected. Its their way of protesting against the fucked up world and their fucked up place in it......or they're just selfish feckers.

Never pick up dog poo (apart from the garden) - I live in the back of beyond and the only people I see are driving tractors.

I live in a rural village, no pavements, very agricultural. Have no problem picking up pop and always do so. What I object to is having to carry it for miles. Just one pop bin in the village.

I don't think anyone is going to confess on a thread like this that they don't pick up their dog's shit. I know that the majority of dog owners are responsible and wouldn't dream of leaving dog shit on the ground. But quite obviously there are a lot that don't.

This is one of the many reasons why I don't have a dog. I don't want to pick warm poo up with just a bag between me and it. Then carry a poo handbag along til I find a bin.

I do own a cat who uses a litter tray but she buries poo in the litter and I can use the scoop.

Somebody on another thread mentioned 'stick and flick' but I am not sure what that is.

Always pick up our dog's poo and occasionally the poo from other dogs too.

I have seen dogs on leads being dragged along behind their owners. The poor dog has been squatting and pooping and then being throttled as it is dragged along further while the owner seems oblivious. I think this must be one of the reasons for the poos that spread out for yards along the path. Don't have a dog if you can't pick up the poop!

What I don't understand is the ones who bag the poo but then leave the bag in the middle of the pavement. Standing on squishy dog poo is bad enough; standing in it in a plastic bag so you slip and nearly go flying is worse, even if your shoes stay clean.

I saw a man walking along yesterday and he blew his nose directly on to the pavement outside of a children's play area. I'm guessing that's the same sort of person who leaves dog shit behind. Some people just don't give a teeny tiny fuck about anything other than themselves and their convenience.

There are instances where I don't pick up my dog's mess, let me share:

• If we are walking and its not on the path (ie if we're in the woods and it's deep into the woodland)
• If there are a lack of poo bins around, forcing me to carry a stinking bag of poo for the remainder of the walk
• If its a tiny poo, its not worth the plastic in picking it up.

Usually I will leave it if it meets 2 or more of these criteria, (ie not on pathway and no bins around), seems acceptable to leave it.

I'd never leave dog poo on the pavement or somewhere it's likely to be trodden in.

When I was a teenager I used to not always pick up because I didn't want anyone from school to see me carrying a bag of dog poo as I would have found it really embarrassing. Now I feel embarrassed and stupid that I didn't pick up...

Oh yuck... I had a bloody crap (excuse the pun) time recently cleaning all the dog crap off my pushchair wheels of my Urbo after some arsehole person couldn’t be bothered to pick up their pet’s poo on our estate.

It was the only time I had been pleased I didn’t have a pushchair with proper tyres and lots of small grooves on the wheels...

MIL doesn't (no longer a dog owner, but does look after family's) she is so disgusted by the idea of picking it up, she wouldn't allow us to put our bagged dogs poo in their outside bin when we stayed there. Still not sure if she wanted me to just leave it in the garden...

I use biodegrable bags do not 'wasting plastic' to pick up a small poo.
I pick up everywhere as pick up poo is not about keeping the environment clean it is actually about human health. The original campaign in the 1980s was to prevent toxocara and Echinococcus infection in humans. As a result of the campaign human infection fell by 75% it is now on the rise again due the misconception that 'stick and flick' is okay or people no longer picking up.
Stick and flick in the countryside has lead to a 1000% increase in sheep carcass condemnation at the slaughter houses due to Echinococcus infection. This is cost the UK sheep farmers 1000s in lost income.
All dog poo should be picked up no matter where you are to protect human health.
U.K. law states that you should always have a poo bag with you when out with your dog so if your dog occasionally does two poos you need to leave the house with at least three bags.
Look up Hydatid cyst and you will discover how important to human health this is.

Someone left a massive dog poo outside our primary school - a while ago now, when at least one of my dc was still there..- I mentioned it at the office because to me the easiest solution was caretaker blasting it into gutter.. To be told "it's not his job" by school administrator!! I replied no it isn't whilst its there outside his house, but when every child and parent have traipsed it onto playground and into changing rooms I assume then it will be his MUCH bigger job? Idiots! He was hosing it as I left the playground but plenty had trodden it by then! I have dogs and I clean up religiously, I loathe people who leave it for others to contend with.

I spray turds with bright coloured chalk paint to stop people walking through them (hopefully). I don't have a dog but look longingly at them as they pass.

There is one lazy bastard that leaves them here, it is round a corner, not directly outside a house so not easy to spot who it is.

My DP has confronted people in the street several times for leaving dog poo. They always clam up and don’t know what to say! Its brilliant to watch, although I would never do it myself as we live in a rough area and I am tiny and much less scary looking than DP. It’s a disgrace and it totally drags the whole area down, which leads to even more people not picking it up!

I used to live somewhere where there were hardly any dog poo bins or bins of any description and hated carrying around a bag(s) (my dog likes to poo quite soon after leaving the house and then go about another 4 times!) but I did every time.

I now live somewhere where there are loads of dog poo bins but I still see quite a bit of dog poo on the pavements. One considerate owner let their dog do a massive poo right outside my front gate and a delivery driver walked in it.

Once my dog did more poos than I had bags for and I actually knocked at someone's door and asked if they had a carrier bag I could have.

I usually have a bottle of water with me too for my dog to have a drink and on the rare occasion that the poo is a bit runny I can wash it away.

I've thought about this and think it's down to pride in where you live and where you walk your dog. If you loved it and had attachment to it and felt it had worth and value you wouldn't leave shit on it. You have to care about your streets. I think that a lot of people don't feel part of their communities for a huge variety of reasons and this makes it easy to not really care what happens to it.
There will also be a few people who literally don't give a shit but I don't think that's the whole reason in a lot of cases.

I always pick up. The only times I haven't are once when my dog had the runs and did a (liquid) poo in the middle of a patch of nettles and knew I'd get stung to hell and not be able to pick much up) and once at night when I searched for ages using my phone torch and couldn't find it - I thought I had and bagged it but it was a cold poo so must have been some other dogs poo )

I used to be a park ranger and mowing parks and alongside footpaths and getting sprayed in poo is not pleasant. It takes 2 seconds to pick up ffs.

I think the majority of mnetters pick up so just don't have this mentality, although some of them will do the flick and stick which as a pp has pointed out has pretty awful environmental consequences but that's more ignorance than anything else. The types who don't pick up at all are probably the arsehole types. We all know the ones I mean. They think that having an aggressive dog is a status symbol, they don't look after their dogs properly in terms of socialising/behaviour management etc, their own gardens are full of shit so they obviously won't care about public places. I should imagine few of them are on mumsnet so we're unlikely to get any insight as to their motivation here.
