Bastarding Argos

Ordered a new washer dryer for delivery today because it's the only day I can be home for the next week. Take the day off as they're delivering between 7am and 6pm. Up and dressed by 630am. Received a text advising me that they'll be delivering in a particular 2 hour time slot this afternoon and I'll get a call about an hour beforehand to give me a more definite time. Lovely. I take out the old machine and wheel it out for collection.

Receive a call from a very cheery sounding delivery man telling me he'll be here within the hour.

Happy days.

Of course I now realise that the reason he sounded cheery is because he was taking the fucking piss. Half an hour later I get a text from Argos telling me that they weren't able to deliver today. No explanation.

Called them to find out why (because apparently the onus is on me to find out) and it seems they didn't bother loading it onto the van. No apology, nothing. The (frankly quite arsey) call centre woman asked - When can we re-deliver? Doesn't re-deliver imply they tried in the first place?

I've cancelled the order since I don't trust that they'll bother pitching up the next time, am now without a washing machine and am fuming at having had to waste my time and money with them when, if I'd wanted to have delivery a different day, I could (and would) have gone elsewhere.

I've now lost a day's pay for nothing and I'm going to have to wait 5 days before they refund my debit card.

Am I being unreasonable for being furious about this? Would it have been that difficult to just give me a call to let me know (especially having called to tell me they'd be here within the hour)?

I’d be fuming too. I would certainly take it further....especially as you’ve lost a days pay waiting for it to be delivered 😡

Paddington68 · 21/03/2019 16:10

Can you 1471 the delivery driver back?

ColeHawlins · 21/03/2019 16:14

AO really are so much better.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 21/03/2019 16:15

I'd cancel it and order from AO. Think they do next day delivery. Or try an independent retailer as they are more likely to fit in with you and deliver when convenient.

badlydrawnperson · 21/03/2019 16:17

YANBU that is wank

PostcodeJack · 21/03/2019 16:20

I've cancelled it much to the annoyance of the call centre woman who clearly thought I was unreasonable in doing so.

I would normally go AO but they didn't have the make/model I wanted available for a while. Should have stuck with them since I'm waiting anyway!

It's a shame since I've ordered a lot from Argos over the years and now I must boycott them forever

I made call centre woman give me the address (since apparently I can't complain online) and will definitely be taking it further.

OH looked amused when he popped home (means he won't have to plumb a machine in for a bit) until I told him he was taking everything to the launderette. He now hates Argos too!

Currys delivered our fridge freezer the next day (a Sunday!) even wheeled/carried it around the back because it was too big for the front door! Can't comment on their removal service because we kept the old ones for the garage.

LindaLa · 21/03/2019 16:31

Argos are shit but thank your lucky stars you don't have to waste your time with ao.
They are horrendous. Had to redeliver twice, couldn't find my house (I live in London, big street, well sign posted)
First time offended I wouldn't accept dented mc.

Refused to fit as "if I don't have 3 metres of pipe, I don't have to"

Went to currys in the end.

Next day delivery. Job done.

Eliza9917 · 21/03/2019 16:32

I'd escalate the complaint and keep going until I'd been reimbursed for my day off.

gruffaloshmuffalo · 21/03/2019 16:34

AO used to deliver for Argos. I'm pretty sure they still do, they did when I worked for them a couple of years ago. I wouldn't use AO at all, I'm more likely to go to Curry's

PinkHeart5914 · 21/03/2019 16:34

Ahhh I’ve had this with curry’s before and I cancelled the order too, they can’t be bothered to deliver on time and fail to give an explanation so they aren’t having my money!

AO however I’ve had a microwave, 2 tv, washing machine and fridge off them in the last year and never have any issues what so ever

Mishappening · 21/03/2019 16:36

Tesco delivery once failed to arrive at all and I rang the helpline at about 9.30pm; they rang the store, then rang me back to say the driver had run out of time on his shift and taken it back to the store! I suggested that maybe they might have let me know.

I wrote to the CEO; and got a full refund on the order (which was delivered the next day) - which was huge as it was pre-Christmas!

Since then they have always arrived on the dot of the start of my hour slot - I assume the store has a "Don't mess with this woman" sticker on my orders!! Grin

thedisorganisedmum · 21/03/2019 16:40

I'd be fuming too!

I tend to use John Lewis - they come up surprising good value and are more reliable.

DontCallMeShitley · 21/03/2019 16:41

AO used to be good-ish, but the last couple of times I used them they were absolute shite.

Euronics are very good though, deliver when they say they will, install, come back if there is a problem, come back again if there is another problem and change the machine if it is crap and you reject it, then install a new one. They also do it quickly and efficiently.

AO send incompetent workers who will partially attach pipes and leave, flooding the kitchen. They will also send men who can't be bothered to check the pipes to get the correct fittings and then suggest leaving the machine in the middle of the kitchen for you to get someone else to install. They will do the absolute minimum of work. Stopped using them and went to Euronics.

Pinkbells · 21/03/2019 16:42

I would be angry at that too. Ditto John Lewis - they are often similar prices to Agros (yep, deliberate spelling!) and often offer an extended warranty free of charge. Customer service is MUCH better as well.

UnspiritualHome · 21/03/2019 16:42

That's appalling. Make sure you publicise this through their Twitter and FB pages.

NewAndImprovedNorks · 21/03/2019 16:43

Argos delivery men once made me cry.

I will not be buying white goods from them ever again

oldmum22 · 21/03/2019 16:44

Twitter and FB are your friend

floribunda18 · 21/03/2019 16:47

John Lewis did this to me with an oven. Three times it took to get it delivered. They used to be good but have outsourced their larger goods delivery now and I won't use them for that. I've never had a problem with AO.

MilkyMamma · 21/03/2019 16:50

I would be furious too, similar thing happened with us at Currys. I would contact them on Facebook messenger, they've always been absolutely brilliant any time I've had a problem. I think social media is definitely handy for things like this, they want to keep it in messenger and off the public page! Good luck!

PostcodeJack · 21/03/2019 16:51

John Lewis didn't have them in stock and have looked on Euronics (thank you for the link DontCallMeShitley) but they don't have it either (am looking for a black one) .

I would quite happily go and pick it up but that apparently is not an option.

Will be trying the other options mentioned (who knew Currys delivered on a Sunday?) and feel a bit sad that it's not that unusual

OP posts:
Stinkytoe · 21/03/2019 16:52

Currys delivery made me cry, they managed to trash my hallway and my new fridge freezer a week before Christmas and didn’t give a damn!

Don’t go with them!

JL/ AO are both much better from experience.

dreamingofsun · 21/03/2019 16:54

whilst not condoning bad customer service, this may be the operator's way of coping. one of my kids works for a customer service call centre and he says people say things on the phone they would never do face to face (he has worked in retail for about 6 years so is used to dealing with the public).

they have a room they take the more sensitive caller handlers to when they burst into tears and there are several training videos on stress. and these are all minimum wage jobs of course

oh4forkssake · 21/03/2019 16:57

Honestly try someone local. We have a local appliances shop that I go to first, price compare with AO/JLT/Euronics/Currys/Argos etc and those big ones have never given me a better price.

I had a horrendous experience with JL on a washing machine and a fridge a few years ago (which did, in fairness, result in rather large discounts) but since then I've gone with our local crowd and wouldn't go anywhere else now.
