Without giving any background as I would like some unbiased opinions, please

How does this birthday card make you feel?

Don't even get why this is a birthday card so of no use to you I suppose.

It’s a shit card. I imagine the person that would send this would be a bit of a sexist knobhead with a crap sense of humour.

Somebody please explain the joke because I don't get it

It's a joke based on confusion of expectation/meaning.

He says 'I'm going to the pub, get your coat on'
She (the audience) thinks he's asked her to put her coat on to accompany him.
In fact, he is selfishly planning to turn off the heating when he leaves, so he is advising her to make to with her coat.

avocadochocolate the joke is he says he’s going to the pub and tells her to put her coat on, so she thinks she’s invited and so should put a coat on to go out with him. But actually he’s going without her and turning the heating off as he’ll be out, so he means put your coat on as you’ll be cold alone in the heating-free house waiting for him to get back.

The joke is about how sexist and vile the man is. And how eager and sad the woman is.

It's an ironic joke about a horrible marriage.

It's funny because people tend to laugh at things that shock them that have a grain of truth there, either in society generally or in themselves.

I can't think of an occasion where I would like to give a card like that to someone.

Looks like the sort of joke that Les Dawson would have appreciated; sexist and unfunny.

I think it’s the type of card you don’t give to anyone with a massive stick up their arse.

It's horrible. I don't like jokes about abusive relationships any more than I like jokes about rape.

Report

Yes les Dawson type of humour.
I’d just be surprised if I’d got that as it’s so dull and I don’t know anyone who would think it’s funny.

It's a line off the royle family from years ago. It was funny watching it but I don't find the card that funny, not offended though.

I think it’s funny!

We have a joke about the heating in our house - one of us would have it on full blast all year and the other not at all.

Still it’s not very ‘birthday’ as a card is it?

Tired, dull humour based in tired old tedious sexist tropes.

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2019 18:04

I find it funny. I've seen it before. I get that if you have experience of an abusive relationship it might be a bit close to the bone but for most of us it just plays on an in joke which is what these cards tend to do.

It's funny. Jim in the Royle family says it to barb. Was funny then too.

I don’t think it’s very funny, it’s a bit sad actually but I guess some people would like it.

About as funny as a cold shit sandwich i.e. not very funny at all.

Not even as funny as one of those 70's seaside 'humour' postcards and by fuck they were not funny either.

Can people really not do better than this?

It makes me feel like I have jumped on a time machine and it is 1987.
I am at a birthday party with vienetta as dessert and eating chocolate cigarettes
Not funny then, not funny now

It's an eye roller, it's just a slightly shit joke, I'm not offended

It’s overall pretty depressing - I’m surprised so many PPs think it’s funny. I guess if you watched the show it was from it would have more context.

I think it depends who it's from!!

Haha. I found it quite amusing

Took me a while to get it. I'm not bothered by it as it doesn't trigger any history with me but I can see it would if you came from a background like that. It's just a crap joke otherwise.

Not a card I would send as I don't find it funny. Would be completely bemused to receive it
