A little bit of advice needed for good areas in Manchester ...Follow on post

Hi everyone,
I posted a couple of weeks ago about moving to Manchester and got some helpful responses, but still need a little advice...
Previously almost everyone suggested south Manchester, sale, Hale , Altrincham, as well as the moors and parts of Stockport.
I have 4dc and like I mentioned my budget is ideally max of £310k for a 4 bed, but that doesn't seem to get me much in those areas.
I was wandering if you guys could enlighten me on Eccles ( seen lovely affordable new builds there) , which parts of Stockport and stretford and prestwich (again lovely new builds) are good in terms of schools including secondary? I'm after good family locations not too rural.
I've noticed checking school checker on right move most primary schools seem good but secondary are touch and go, although they all seem good in the south but again just more pricey.
Any help would be appreciated?
Thanks

Oh I grew up in New Mills! It's absolutely lovely. I'd definitely take a look, even if just to see. It is quite rural but still close enough to commute on the train into Manchester.

I've always been more of a countryside type person though so I prefer the out of the way places.

ItsAMooPoint · 18/03/2019 10:49

If you want examples of nice areas around Stockport sort of way, I'd recommend Bramhall OP, it's nice there. Or perhaps Poynton?

SparklySneakers · 18/03/2019 10:49

Well there's less nice bits of everywhere but my top choices would be:

Marple: 2 train stations, theatre, cinema, good restaurants and community feel, very good schools, beautiful scenery, canal.
Hazel Grove: train station, frequent buses to Manchester and Stockport, good schools, big Sainsbury's, aldi, M&S simply food.
Offerton: Bosden Farm would be my choice there I think. No shopping to speak of but between Marple and Stockport. Good bus service.
Romiley: train station, good local shopping, theatre
Bramhall: posher than others, excellent bars and restaurants, very good high school, train station, closest to big Tesco and M&S

Cheadle Hulme: Waitrose, train station, decent shopping, nice place also close to big Tesco and M&S
I've lived in all except Romiley and Bramhall but went to school in Bramhall.
All stations link to Manchester, cheadle Hulme and Bramhall link to Stockport and Manchester. Lovely parks in all, nice and leafy.

SparklySneakers · 18/03/2019 10:53

SK6 and SK7 are nice. Avoid SK2 and SK3. SK8 also nice (Cheadle and Heald Green-John Lewis and Sainsbury's there plus good local shops and eateries).

Lauren83 · 18/03/2019 10:55

I'm SK6 Bredbury and really happy where we are, we are just next to the train station, my other half is from Offerton and he would say it was mainly rough but there's nicer parts to it now, Bredbury is great for us as I can get to work in 30 min usually (Manchester) and DP can get on the motorway quickly as he travels a lot for work, also good train service and lots of things to do/places to eat within a few minutes drive/train, like said Romiley and Marple nice but traffics a nightmare and whilst not far would add a lot onto your commute IMO

Lauren83 · 18/03/2019 10:57

I agree with PP I work just next to Levenshulme and I think it gets an unfair reputation from what I have seen myself it's a lot better than it's reputation from years back

shouldiorshouldinot · 18/03/2019 11:41

Lauren83 god you mentioned bredbury, I've seen on right move quite a few houses there but no one has mentioned that area before so I'll definitely check it out.

Sparklingsneakers thank you that's very helpful. Any idea if schools in those areas?

Marple has very good primaries (Ludworth, St Mary's and All Saints) although Rose Hill not so great if their sats are anything to go by. Marple High School is very good. Hazel Grove and Bramhall High are very good. Think Cheadle Hulme high school got a good report recently too. St James' in cheadle Hulme was one of the top schools a few years back but not looked since.

wowfudge · 18/03/2019 12:23

Davenport in Stockport is nice too and has a train station. We live near New Mills and I wouldn't call it isolated! Lots of community events, two railway stations (on different lines) and decent bus links, including to the airport.

SparklySneakers · 18/03/2019 12:33

We love New Mills and visit often. The park is fantastic and we recently discovered the community orchard. We often picnic down the Torrs and walk along the river and the lantern festival is awesome and there's loads going on there. I'd happily live in new mills.

shouldiorshouldinot · 18/03/2019 12:44

Wowfudge thanks I've seen a lot of houses in davenport too but wasn't sure of the area will definitely have a check now

OP posts:
shouldiorshouldinot · 18/03/2019 12:44

Haven't seen any properties in new mills but will have another check thank you

shouldiorshouldinot · 18/03/2019 12:46

Ok so does new mills come under Manchester or Derbyshire? I'm so confused 🤦‍♀️

I posted on your original thread extolling the virtues of gorgeous Gatley. Stockports hidden gem. SK8 postcode but separated from the more fashionable Cheadle by the (horrendous) A34. It;s got two of the best primaries in the area (one is Sunday Times top 50 UK). Kingsway Secondary- just rated good OFSTED in January

Mainline railway to town (15 mins) and the airport, five mins to the M60 and M56. Loads of green spaces including a skate park and a nature reserve. Wine bars, two pubs, a handful of restaurants (but loads within a few mins in Cheadle and Didsbury. tesco Metro and a new Coop being built.

Mainly thirties semis- family homes with a couple of seventies estates. Check out 3/4 bed detached on the leafy Lakes estate in your budget- which has a John Lewis in walking distance!! New builds are mainly the Sharston side which is cheaper but less desirable.

Great community feel with a conservation group, loads of kids stuff and a great self funding Gatley Festival every summer.

shouldiorshouldinot · 18/03/2019 12:46

Anyone heard of disley? Any good ?

OP posts:
SparklySneakers · 18/03/2019 12:49

Derbyshire. Is 35 mins by train to Manchester. Goes via strines, marple, Romiley. Goes to Sheffield the other way (Hope Valley line). The other line is Buxton to Manchester and goes via Disley, middlewood, hazel grove, Stockport, Heaton chapel.
Is a lovely small town but rural.

SparklySneakers · 18/03/2019 12:50

Disley is lovely and rather expensive.

ItsAMooPoint · 18/03/2019 12:52

Disley is not far from New Mills and is nice too.

New Mills comes under Derbyshire although I believe Disley is Cheshire? Though feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not too far from Hazel Grove and you would have the lovely Lyme Park right on your doorstep.

SparklySneakers · 18/03/2019 12:56

My friends rather beautiful bungalow backs onto Lyme Park. They are separated by a stream.

Disley traffic is shit though especially on a weekend when Lyme park traffic backs up the A6.

High Lane perhaps? Still shit traffic but good primary school. Not much to it though. More a drive through kind of place between hazel grove and Disley.

wowfudge · 18/03/2019 12:57

Yes, New Mills is in Derbyshire and Disley is in Cheshire. The new airport relief road, the A555, has shaved a good ten to fifteen minutes off lots of car journeys for us. We are semi rural - I'm not sure NM fits the OP's brief but I was responding to a pp who said her friends thought it was isolated.

wowfudge · 18/03/2019 12:58

I wouldn't choose to live in High Lane tbh although we have friends there.

Newyearnewme2019 · 18/03/2019 13:01

where do you live at the minute?
