A little bit of advice needed for good areas in Manchester ...Follow on post

Hi everyone,
I posted a couple of weeks ago about moving to Manchester and got some helpful responses, but still need a little advice...
Previously almost everyone suggested south Manchester, sale, Hale , Altrincham, as well as the moors and parts of Stockport.
I have 4dc and like I mentioned my budget is ideally max of £310k for a 4 bed, but that doesn't seem to get me much in those areas.
I was wandering if you guys could enlighten me on Eccles ( seen lovely affordable new builds there) , which parts of Stockport and stretford and prestwich (again lovely new builds) are good in terms of schools including secondary? I'm after good family locations not too rural.
I've noticed checking school checker on right move most primary schools seem good but secondary are touch and go, although they all seem good in the south but again just more pricey.
Any help would be appreciated?
Thanks

Whatnow40 really? I haven't looked at 3 beds at all only looked at 4. Will definitely and look at them now. Is that only in the area you mentioned or anywhere? Thanks

A family member’s 4bed semi in Timperley has just been valued at £585,000. Sorry, I don’t know the area of the Rightmove one you posted but would be very suspicious of such a low price.

WhatNow40 · 16/03/2019 16:31

Sorry I don't know what happened to the line spacing there Hmm

There are 5 properties within those links.

You do tend to get more loft conversions with steep steps 'up North'! I've certainly viewed houses and been surprised by the pitch and just how steep they can be.

Littlebelina · 16/03/2019 16:31

If you are going to commute by train have you thought about Glossop? Traffic is hideous though if you have to drive. I would probably go Marple

tararabumdeay · 16/03/2019 16:33

I'm from the area near the Timperly one. Just did google maps and looked up Trafford. It looks, from that, like it is within the boundary.

Nice enough place and that end of Wythenshawe is absolutely fine anyway. Lots of employment, road links pretty good and looks like 15 mins on bus to Altrincham train stn.

Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Bramhall, Marple, Disley, Poynton.

That Timperley one is on an awful estate. And the Whitefield one isn't great either. With Whitefield you'd want to be further from the motorway. Whitefield centre, rather than Besses.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 16/03/2019 16:44

Hazel Grove has excellent schools

shouldiorshouldinot · 16/03/2019 16:49

Not read the full thread and not sure the reasons behind needing to be in Manchester but I live in warrington and would recommend. Large town, lovely houses in south warrington, but with a 300k budget for 4 beds your best bet is probably the west of the town, lots of schools and easy access to the countryside, two train stations, 20 mins on the train to deansgate/oxford road. Driving it's about 30 mins depending on which part of the town you're driving from and time of day obviously.

White dust
What on Earth is wrong with Heaton Moor? It's pretty posh op. The main problem is getting anything within your price range. Same for bramhall, cheadle etc.

You could look at South Reddish, Heaton Chapel or parts of Levenshulme. Reddish is solid working class mostly, but the highschool is up and coming and there are some good bits esp near Heaton Chapel. Heaton Chapel is bisected by the A6 which is a pain but the houses are fine. Levenshulme - there are some well dodgy bits but again it's up and coming as people are priced out of other areas.

Firswood and the sides of old Trafford closest to Chorlton / whalley range/ firswood tick all the boxes. As does Stretford all the way out to Urmston and flixton in my opinion.

Another vote for New Mills - driving can be a pain (along with everywhere on the A6) , but there are trains every 20 minutes or so and it is with in the GMPT area for season tickets.

Or if you prefer more rural - Hayfield, Chinley and Buxworth all have good primaries. They also put you in the catchment for Chapel High school which is "Outstanding" and has a sister school attached for children with SEN.

bk1981 · 16/03/2019 18:46

Ramsbottom is lovely. It has a nice high street with some great restaurants and bars. Lovely walks up the hills and over the moors on your doorstep.

1poppy1 · 16/03/2019 18:58

Just to mention from the previous thread, OP said she wanted urban not villagey and to be able to drive into the city centre within 30 minutes.

Commute from Marple is hideous, Romiley a bit better but would push it to get door to door within 30 minutes. They are both villages, as are Cheadle Hulme, Bramhall, Ramsbottom, New Mills, Glossop and many other options that people recommend. Commute from Derbyshire is much worse than Marple, 1 hour plus, despite what people will say.

Urmston would be a good option I think. I quite like Levenshulme and Whalley Range as options, very variable, you would need to come and view some houses to get a feel. They are both South Manchester too though.

North Manchester - I think the problem that people are having is that the 'nice' areas are villagey or out of your price / commuting range, or non-existent. Prestwich is definitely worth a look, again you need to come and view some actual houses. Also get the feeling it will be at the limits of your price range, at least for the 'nice' bits.

1poppy1 · 16/03/2019 19:05

Levenshulme: this looks like a lovely house in an OK location, very handy for Levvy station

Prestwich: decent sized house that might suit

NB references to 'proximity to places of worship' probably means near the synagogue, as Prestwich is something of a hot stop for many Jewish families.

Whalley Range: big house, might need some work
