To think the world has a big white supremacy problem?

Is anyone actually surprised that this has happened? It is shocking and sickening, but let’s face it, it has been so acceptable for so long to vilify muslims, to abuse muslims, to attack muslims - politicians have made careers out of this. Is it any wonder that yet another white supremacist has murdered muslims and has received praise for doing so by keyboard warriors on various platforms.

I (and most muslims in the West) have been dealing with the aftermath of 9/11 by being held responsible for every terrorist atrocity. Dealing with knee-jerk reactions and responses became the norm for me since then. Every terror attack, grooming ring, extremist preacher became my responsibility to explain, condemn and apologise for. I was asked why muslims don’t put double-page ads in the paper to apologise and condemn. I was told that I shouldn’t be surprised at the hostility towards muslims because the few give everyone a bad name.

So here I am, wondering if those people (all white) who were quick to vilify my religion and me and demanded an apology and explanation for the latest newspaper headline will now explain today’s headlines to me. Will they explain why white people do this? Will they give me a full breakdown of his manifesto, explain each name listed on the white terrorist’s guns, explain the choice of music on the video, explain why he filmed it, explain why he had so much support (white terrorist supported by other whites, therefore all whites must be terrorists) and take out ads in national papers apologising for being white. After all it was a white person who did this and just like all muslims were held accountable, will all whites be held accountable too?

but very comfortable and way more so than the majority of the world’s people.I am grateful for that, I really am. I’d like to see a world where everyone got to live their best live and thrived

This bit was good

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/03/2019 21:27

And what thedarklady said

Imissgmichael · 16/03/2019 21:29

Tinkerbell you will always get people on MN telling you your racist despite what you say.
I’ve made comments and said my black husband and mixed race kids agree with me to be met with being told I’m a liar or suggestions that I shouldn’t be talking through my husband. I’ve been recently told I’m not the religion I am and my grandparents aren’t the religions they were. I’ve been told that no RC would call themselves Roman Catholic and my husband would not refer to himself as ethnically West Indian. There was a comment recently that was allowed to stand that I’m currently looking into and taking further beyond MN.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/03/2019 21:31

Has anyone called tinkerbell racist

Ive obviously missed that bit

C8H10N4O2 · 16/03/2019 21:33

YANBU Op but...

Tinkerbell456 · 16/03/2019 21:35

The dark lady. I’m sorry if I came across as saying it’s all Aborigines own doing That isn’t what I meant at all. Not what I think either. Certainly the past builds the future and past injustices have definitely had an impact on Aborigines. You only have to consider the enormous decrease in the size of the Aboriginal population since White people arrived. Bringing diseases that Aborigines had never been exposed to before therefore hit them harder, they brought guns that gave Aborigines no chance in armed conflicts etc. Lots of stuff. Some of it unintentional but devastating to the Aboriginal population nevertheless less.

Imissgmichael · 16/03/2019 21:39

No Rufus but the inference was there.

DioneTheDiabolist · 16/03/2019 21:42

Tinkerbell, maybe you aren't consciously racist, but your posts portray you as ignorant at best. Your grasp of the history of your country is woefully lacking.

There is no doubt that Aborigines in Oz were definitely treated as second class citizens as part of main stream attitudes until pretty recently.
They are currently treated as second class citizens. Still I suppose it's better than being classed as indigenous faunaShock, which they were until the 1960s.

I am not suggesting for one moment that white “settlers” were blameless.
Good, because far from being "not blameless", they were guilty of attempted genocide.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/03/2019 21:42

From whom

Thats a serious question, there is a lot of inference and extrapolation and implying that goes on and i quite often miss it

Dont want to do it myself

Would you mind pming me?

Honestly not a problem if you'd rather not

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/03/2019 21:44

Sorry

That was to micheal

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2019 21:50

“just don’t know that there is much point in dwelling on the past”

Tinkerbelle-i’m older than many mumsnetters, I accept that. But my mother knew people who were not aware that hunting and killing “blackfellas” was a crime. If she was alive she would be 99. So that is in living memory.

Imissgmichael · 16/03/2019 21:56

Rufus I think that the inhabitants of Australia were treated inhumanly. It’s a bit of a theme really isn’t it? It really upsets me that mixed race children were forceably removed. The invading army can do what they want. I’m happy to
Pm you but what do you want me to tell you.

Tinkerbell456 · 16/03/2019 21:57

Dione? indiginous fauna? Oh my fucking God. I did not have any idea of that. It beggars belief. Many folk are right in saying I need to inform myself better it seems. I am speechless at that.

Dutch1e · 16/03/2019 22:00

I am stating that I am not responsible for the culture in NZ just because I am white.

Then you would be wrong. And I say that as a white woman, a Pakeha but living in Europe for many years.

We are all responsible because we all benefit from a profoundly white-biased system, whether we choose to or not.

Unconsciously reaping these benefits also make us responsible for a system that produces terrorists like the ones we're talking about now.

Imissgmichael · 16/03/2019 22:04

Are we really calling human beings fauna now?

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2019 22:10

tinkerbelle- start with the Sturt creek and Bedford Downs massacres. They both happened in my mother’s lifetime. Hardly “dwelling in the past”

Tinkerbell456 · 16/03/2019 22:11

Not now Michael but disturbingly recently it seems. I just can’t imagine that mindset.

GardenVariety · 16/03/2019 22:12

Social media has provided and made acceptable, hostilities towards muslims. The “final solution” has been proposed about the existence of muslims a few times recently by white racists. So many ‘like’ these views. Yet so many of those do not see themselves as racist.

Imissgmichael · 16/03/2019 22:12

No Dutche. It’s like the stupid sins of the father idea. God help me if that was true.

Bertrandrussel my FiL is still living and in his 90’s. He was married to my black MIL.
My DH has just found out his GM was white and Irish, what’s your point.

Tinkerbell456 · 16/03/2019 22:12

Will do Bertrand.

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2019 22:15

Then google The Stolen Generation, and look at the dates. Native Australian children were being forcibly taken from their parents until the late 1960s. The general view was that both parents and children would easily get over the separation- “out of sight, out of mind”

GardenVariety · 16/03/2019 22:17

POC have been constantly dehumanised by white racists and it still continuing to this day.

OP posts:
Imissgmichael · 16/03/2019 22:24

Yes I know Bertrand and in reality it’s not really that long ago. I’ve made sure I’ve let my kids know about their heritage, African, West Indian, South American and Irish and English.

Tinkerbell456 · 16/03/2019 22:24

I don’t feel responsible for tha past but I do feel a responsibility to put past injustices right as far as possible.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/03/2019 22:27

It really upsets me that mixed race children were forceably removed

The whole thing is just horrific isnt it
