To think teachers shouldn't be drinking on trips?

Dc just back from trip overseas. Apparently as soon as they were in their rooms the teachers went to the hotel bar. (The kids snuck down to check on them so they could all go into each other's rooms). Were also drinking wine and cocktails at dinner (before walking kids around an overseas city for an hour to their hotel at 11pm)

Is this normal? In charge of 13yr olds?

@Generationrenter teachers are protected on Mumsnet? Not ime. Though I'd be interested to find out how many other professions offer unpaid holidays to supervise other people's children (which is generally quite a stressful occasion)?

I've been on plenty of trips as a teacher. I rarely drink but if I have a glass of wine then I am well within my rights as long as there is adequate supervision for the children.
@Newyeardontcare if you don't feel it fair that the teachers are due a break on the trip probably best you don't avail in the future and take your own children to said dangerous city.

@HopeIsNotAStrategy but you've saved so much by not paying for the holiday..... surely you can afford cocktails at dinner, wine and maybe champagne 🍾

You cant afford hotel alcohol?
But you get paid for all those holidays- you must be comfortably off. Or you could sell all those expensive gifts that the parents all by you every year.

And it's all well and good saying 'one glass is fine' but who knows what their tolerance levels are?

Pretty sure they will know their own tolerance levels, you know, with being responsible adults.

Have you considered that your nosy child may be exaggerating OP? Could it be that the teenagers might not be seeing the whole picture and actually several teachers may have been drinking an OJ?! A couple of drinks after a long day is acceptable. Calm down.

The last school trip I went on was a choir tour. One set of parents followed us so they could go to the concert. One evening they joined us in our hostel (not hotel, no luxury for us) and absolutely insisted in buying all the staff drinks.
It’s a ‘not all parents are like that’ situation.

Parents don't buy gifts at secondary level.

Dear lord I was being sarcastic!

And also - just as an aside - as a secondary school teacher I can assure they do. Just not the diamond bracelets people seem to think we get
.

I’ve taught secondary for 20 years and have received one bottle of perfume from a parent. It is totally the norm everywhere I’ve worked for S.teachers to not receive gifts. Some lovely parents buy biscuits for the staff room, maybe once every couple of years. (I work in state schools, perhaps the competitive gift giving is more common in private).

...I have occasionally received a card from an exam class or student and have kept those all.

I've received gifts every year in both private and state schools. I've never seen the competitive gift giving mentioned here but I dont believe I have ever finished a term without something from somebody and that was the same in state and private.

spat my coffee out at that one. Holiday! Hilarious!

How on earth is taking 40 odd kids away for a few days a holiday?

Mississippi you are obviously just a more outstanding teacher than me, or my colleagues for that matter!

Or maybe just lucky? Not sure why you felt the need to be so bitchy there?
I am not unusual compared to my colleagues.
Or yes, maybe I am?! If that's what I wanted me to say.

Skiing holidays are brilliant because you have instructors and you stay in one place.
They are the only trip that we have a raffle for staffing for because its definitely a different ballgame from dragging year 9 round ypres.

I used to love going on school trips when I was young (from early to mid 80s) and teachers drinking (a lot) was the norm. I recall being on a school cruise aged 12 and it appeared that all adults aboard were getting rat arsed quite a lot of the time. I recall our teacher giving us a lesson (we had one or two lessons per day) with a croaky voice, wearing sunglasses and smelling weird!
Later school trips we were aware of teachers drinking, but none were hammered. My own DC talk about their own school trips and tipsy teachers. They all survived.

@Beautga sadly that is not the case in state secondaries and we have to declare gifts of over a certain value.
I do get a couple of things most years though and always really appreciated. Usually off year 11 classes or my form. I have kept all the cards over 20 years and some of the lovely gifts (that were not eatable or drinkable)

Unless your child took a sip out of every glass to you have no idea if all the teachers were drinking. Just maybe some of them had coke, lemonade, tonic water, or orange juice etc. in a glass? Just a thought.
